phillyb 11-08-2010 05:09 PM

you can try 5w40
but umm...
good luck

labikesrcool 11-08-2010 05:16 PM

you could raise your idle speed with atr using your ap as well.

Waltzy 11-14-2010 11:11 AM

as suggested, you can try a 5w-40....i've been using Rotella in my MS6 with good results....well at least in terms of the engine...i'm having tranny probs once again.

5w40 is really all you can try though. It may patch it for a while, but its gonna blow smoke again. Once its starts smoking its really too late for most.

Been using the 5W-40 Rotella T Syn religiously since new and I've got 60k miles. No smoking here, but I don't have a downpipe (just race pipe).

I thought there was an update to the PCV system that would resolve this issue? This would offset the lack of backpressure from tweaking the exhaust system.

I can only speak from my personal experience, but once a turbo starts smoking I think its too late. When mine started (at 35k) I added the PCV "fix" that worked for so many people, I also added the new turbo banjo bolt, and I had already been running on 5w40 for 15k before it started. I still smoked bigtime after 30 seconds of idling at a red light.

Now on my new OEM K04 I have run 5W40 since day one, still have the PCV fix, and have had the banjo bolt on since day 1. So I have done all I can to prevent this a 2nd time and only time will tell.

save up, you need a new turbo. preferably something NOT k04.

bova 11-15-2010 10:00 AM

You don't need a new turbo. All these fools that say you do don't know what they are talking about. Mine smoked for a bit around 10k miles when I added the downpipe. Switched to 5w40 and upp'd my idle and 30k miles later the turbo is still not smoking, running great and doesn't have any issues.

dizzin9 11-20-2010 08:47 AM

yeah. listen to the e-smart, e-tough guy above me. he knows everything.

bova 11-20-2010 02:01 PM

or listen to e-idiot above me. $500 says if you tear you turbo apart the seals are still fine.

MattJackson86 11-20-2010 04:37 PM

Upping your idle was the fix, not the oil in my opinion. Glad it worked for you, but not everyone is so lucky. Like I said before, I tried all fixes with no luck. The only thing that helped was raising the idle, but with no AP resting my foot on the accelerator got old fast. My seals were shot 100%. I smoked badly and I had oil pouring into my intercooler, so much so the oil started leaking out of the cold pipe bolts. You could touch the interior of my cold pipe and it was soaking wet with oil.

New non-k04 turbo is really the only true fix. Some get lucky though and don't have the issue for a long time.
