Default Oil change took 7 quarts what is going on?

Just got back from an oil change. The guy spoke with me after and said that it took 7 quarts of oil. He was just as puzzled as i but said that he kept checking the dipstick and at 6 quarts it didnt even register on the stick.

I went out after to look at it and it was indeed only midway up the dipstick after it had idled for a few minutes.

The dealership told me 5.5, the manual and everywhere else told me 6 and they ended up putting in 7. Is this ok for my car? As far as I know its the stock filter that the dealership installed last time they did it. This time i didnt go to the dealership.

tldr; oil change place put in 7 quarts, dipstick reads a little over halfway, am i safe?

do you have a balance shaft delete? did you buy your car new? if you have a BSD then it takes exactly 7 quarts.

I didn't buy it new but afaik the previous owner didnt do more than intake, fmic and exhaust. I'm back to stock save for intake. The change was done at the dealership last time so i would assume they would just put whatever the stock one was on? This time the guy said he put the same size one on that i had there.

I can run out to the car if there is some more information i can gather for you. I was going to have them drain some oil out but the dipstick doesnt show overfull. Its midway up the hatches. i just dont want to blow my turbo :C

ALSO, last time i have a small shop do my oil.

lol

bsd=balance shaft delete its a couterweight at the bottom of the block in the oil pan, if this was removed then you're car would take 7 quarts to make up for the bsd.

all jokes aside, im not glad if i think i have too much oil. I can check it tomorrow when i get to work to see how the oil is when hot. Is that safe? I push the car normally and dont want trouble from increased oil pressures.

Yeah i have heard people with the bsd take around 7 quarts. I myself have the spin on conversion and take about 6 quarts. When im done my oil is slightly below the max line, on a fairly level garage floor.

OP.......if your dipstick is fine, ie not broke or the wrong one, shorter than it should be ect. If its the oem dipstick, then its reading correctly, and its if reading correctly your fine man...dont worry about it.

i disagree, best to find out.

next oil change, after you drain the oil, drop the pan and take some pics. at that point we'll revisit.

for now, look for the oil filter, take a picture of it for us. if its got a black bottom with a silver allen key on the bottom, its the stock cartridge filter. the filter is housed in that piece. if not, its likely a spin on filter, and you'll see the brand name right on the filter. these hold a little more oil than the stock cartridge filter, its a common mod, and is typically done with other oem pieces. A picture of the oil filter and we can tell you right away.

Sorry to say, but was the car leveled with the floor when you checked? Have to ask, ive seen ppl try to check the dip stick with the front of the car hoisted 5 feet in the air lol.

But like they said^^ 7qts w/out the balance shaft and should take 6 with the BS.

Thats the thing about being cars modded, you never really know the entire story.

Just checked, Its the stock one. Black with a silver center and what looks like an allen key spot.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll check the dipstick tomorrow when i get to work to see if driving it has raised the amount. Is this safe to do? about a 10 mile commute both ways.

I know it seems like im over worried about this but i dont know enough about this engine to be chill. I just know that my experience tells me to do what the manufacturer says. I cant afford another ms3.

It's safe to check the dipstick when the car is off. Oil won't shoot out.

Don't know if anyone posted and I didn't read, but the gen 1s take like 6.5 or 6.8 quarts.

What is op worried about?

Dealerships selloil by the volume in the bottle. So if they have to "open another quart" even if just for a little bit, they charge you for the whole bottle

What is op worried about?

Dealerships selloil by the volume in the bottle. So if they have to "open another quart" even if just for a little bit, they charge you for the whole bottle

The gen1's absolutely do not take 6.5 or 6.8 quarts.

It's 6 like 08.5MS3 said.

I put in 5.5quarts and that brings the oil level up to where it should be.

5.5, 6.5....
I don't change my own oil, I only go by what it says they put in there. It really hasn't mattered to me once I started paying over $50 for oil changes. They fuck it up and over-fill, they pay for it

Dip sticks are not for checking oil during an oil change, they are for checking oil after you have been driving on it for a while. If your car is pretty stock, put exactly what the manual calls for and forget about it. People forget that it takes time for oil to find its way to the oil pan when you pour it into the valve cover. If you are immediately checking the oil level while doing your oil change you are going to over fill it.

Now if you have BSD or Remote screw on oil filter then you need to use your dipstick to get a good measure, but you still need to give at least a half an hour from the last quart you put in before you check your oil, on a level surface, to get an accurate reading.

To add, do not check when the engine is still hot/recently driven. It will show it is "low."

This should be common knowledge, however.

waiting at least 20min after you turn the car off should be long enough to check your dipstick

Because thats what the tech tells me they put in.

When you get your oil changed they don't tell you how much went in, how much and the condition of the oil that was in there before they change it?

your first mistake was listening to the tech, you must be one of those people they can take advantage of cause you listen to them.

They overfill the damn thing. Which could lead to foaming (like a frothy mix) caused by the crankshaft coming in contact with the oil. Oil pump doesn't like foam. Go by what the book says when you bought the car. Mazda does know what they are doing, which may come as a surprise to some.
