Oil consumtion? Are the speed suppose to consume oil? After 3000 miles the oil was about 1/4" off from the "max" on the dip stick. My car has 17,xxx miles and only a SRI and a test pipe. I have notice no smoking issue. Car build date was 2/08. I have never had any oil consumtion from my mazdaspeed miata between oil changes. |
I don't really notice any and I change my oil very 5000 miles. It could be off a little bit but not enough for me to notice. I'm coming up on 20k miles. Ed |

Dude , I use Motul 8100 ... fully 100 % synthetic every 3500 miles...no burning oil..its great oil and its made in Germany.Houtch se me duetch hastches...lol |
that is within factory specification for oil consumption. There is nothing wrong with your motor. |
On average I add about a liter of oil every 15.000 km... oil consumption varies a lot with the driving style. When I go flat out for a few 100 km on the German Autobahn the consumption of oil is very noticable. The 'still in spec' oil consumption that is mentioned in the manual is extreme imo: 0,8 liter every 1.000 km. At that rate I would change the entire oil content twice between servicing intervals (15k km) Good practice is to check regulary (ie. every week) and definitely check after dealer changes the oil |

Right after I noticed the slight decrease in my oil level I added some oil. Strangely my car started to smoke after idling. I have a cobb sri and a test pipe. I had that two mods for over 5,000 miles and had never smoke in the past. I was wondering if the damn dip stick was giving me the wrong information on my oil level. May be there was no oil consumption afterall and I over filled the oil, thus leading to smoke. I immediately re-installed the second cat. and now the car is not smoking anymore. I am tempted to put the test pipe back on and see. What do you all think? Did I overfilled and cause the smoking issue? |
You overfilled the oil. There is no reason for adding oil when the dipstick shows a quarter quart down. This is beyond the resolution of the measuring instrument at hand (dipstick). It is simply a reference for general use and not a precision instrument. Hell, the car couldve been on a .5* incline which could have caused your reading to be off. |
I will put the test pipe back on this weekend and see what happens. I can't believe this car is so sensitive as far as just a bit of overfilling with oil could cause smoking. I hate that damn dip stick. |
The way the air oil separators in this car is designed will cause oil to puke into the intake manifold or intake tract if overfilled and then result in smokey goodness |
There is a range on the dipstick for a reason. It doesn't have to be up to the top all the time. |
