(Thread Starter) | Neutral : +1 score Problem is, im really picky when it comes to how the car performs. In 5th gear and sometimes 4th with bad gasoline, i get power waves. Definitely from the cobb intake, and I wanted to know what to change on the car to get it to be smooth again. Am I forced to get a cobb access port and get it tuned? I was thinking a TIP, and Exhaust but I don't want to exasperate the issue anymore. I was thinking of full turbo back exhaust, but I want to avoid throwing cells. Any recommendations? I just want safe power because it's also my daily. |

| Neutral : +1 score If you're thinking of getting a full turbo back exhaust you better plan on getting an AP as well. Save yourself the trouble and get an AP now, then fuel pump internals, then test pipe or full exhaust.

| Not Ranked : 0 score i think a wavy power band might be an indication of a problem. i have no wavy power band, and i'm sure surging is a problem that has been discussed.. have you tried searching? what makes you think the sri causes the surging? i'd take it off, put stock airbox on, and then see if it still is 'wavy'. if it is, then you have bigger issues to fix. if not, then it's the sri and i've no clue how you'd fix that.. you may, in fact, already need internals.. good luck

| Not Ranked : 0 score Most people upgrade the fuel pump internals as one of the first mods. Definitely upgrade before doing anything else especially if you are thinking of going with a downpipe. You definitely need an AP to monitor fuel pressure as well to make sure it's above 1600 at WOT. I can't speak for the stage 1 problem as I jumped to stage 2 right away.

I bought the car from the a friend. The milage is really low, and I know the guy personally. He's a MD and treated the car like a baby, it still smells new, looks brandnew, and runs like a champ. It might be bad fuel, california gets the short end of the stick when it comes to high octane. I've searched at there are people with wavy power bands after SRI installation. If not hopefully it blows before the warranty runs out in two years, at that point my other warranty kicks in. =D

It's well documented on these forums that you need to upgrade the pump before going stage2. But you should be fine on stage1 with the stock pump.

What was so confusing about that? Cobb ap ((tuning device)), fuel pump internal upgrade, cnt downpipe, intake and turbo inlet with a e85/93 mix with a dizzy tune ((by phate or bucker))

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score so something really weird just happened. This weekend, in sunny socal I decided to take my friends to the beach, witha full car going up a hill at wide open throttle in fourth gear right at 5500 rpm, the car did a lurch forward and back then continued to go. it's like you dropped the clutch and the car did that jump. it didnt feel like transmission more like motor. I called mazda and spoke with a tech and he said that this was prolly because of the fully load of people in my car, on a hot day, going up a hill and to try new gasoline and let them know if the problem persist, and that it was most likely the engine trying to protect its self from knocking. well tonight I was driving and in fourth gear at WOT the same thing happened, the car did that jerk feeling right at 5500 rpm. Ive been using chevron fuel to rule out terrible gas. I have a cobb SRI and thats the only mod on the car, it just ticked over 26k miles on the odo. do i need to install the stock airbox and take it in? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score That sounds like fuel/load cut. I had the same thing a few times before I got the AP. Always in 4th or 5th at high RPM under WOT.

| Not Ranked : 0 score It's probably not your internals, but you would need logs to be sure. The stock tune isn't shitty because Mazda didn't do R&D, it's shitty because they had to make it conservative and safe. The stock tune isn't optimized for your intake, which is why you're getting load cut and jerky partial throttle acceleration. I would suggest getting an AP sooner rather than later, you can flash a stage1 map now and then go stage2 once you get your other parts installed. EDIT: I don't recommend doing a bunch of mods at the same time anyway, it makes it difficult to tell how your car is reacting to each mod and also if something is wrong it's harder to isolate the issue.
