P2610 CEL Anyone know anything about a P2610 CEL? OBD puller says it's "ECM/PCM Internal Engine Off Timer Performance." Unplugged and re plugged the ECM. CEL went away and came back after 3 ignition cycles. Unplugged negative terminal for 3-5 minutes, cleaned ECM terminals, plugged back together. CEL cleared for 2 ignition cycles then came back. Possible dead computer? Car literally drives fine... Eyeballed all the grounds. They look fine. I've been advised to test the battery. Stock tune as in no tune at all. Any thought? Should I not be driving the car with this CEL? |
Battery tested. Came back bad. Not a big surprise. It was the stock branded Mazda battery with 76k on the ODO. Replaced it. Cleared CEL. Turned the ignition over twice and the damn CEL returned. I have an appt with Mazda tomorrow since I'm totally at a loss. With lack of info out there on this code, I'm not sure what else to do. Anyone have any last minute trouble shooting ideas before I blow $125 at the stealership? |
The only times I've seen that code before have been ECU issues and the ECU has been replaced. As finicky as these cars/ECU's are about having good current I wouldn't be surprised if having a bad battery contributed to the problem. Good luck with the dealership. |

I really hope it's not a PCM/ECM. I would LOVE to not pay out the ass for that... Do you know if we are able to purchase a used unit, and have the dealership reprogram to our car? |
In just a quick googling around the only other stuff I've seen on this code are always more random/intermittent than what you've had, and with those it seems to be a grounding issue. But with those instances the code was only seen two, maybe three times and never returned. The times I've seen it locally, and then with Toyota and two Hyundai's, it was more permanent like yours and no amount of dicking around would get it to stop coming back. In each of those cases the dealership pretty much just called it a death code for the ECU and swapped in a new one. Those were all <50K miles and covered under warranty. I've not paid any attention to ECU swaps on our Speeds, so I couldn't give you a good answer about that. Perhaps somebody else will chime in, or if you're really lucky your dealer will let you know if that's an option. Sorry I can't be more help... |
I really appreciate the help. When I get home, I'm probably going to pull all the grounds and give them a clean and reset the ECU one more time. Regardless, I'll keep the thread updated on the outcome. It'll be good to get some info out their for our platform especially if other owners run into this super annoying CEL... |
@mr.speedy3; had some experience with replacing an ECU. It can be done, you need 2 keys for them to reprogram the new ECU. and it's not horribly expensive if you can find an ECU cheap. |

Well son of a bitch. It IS the PCM; dealer confirmed. Unbenounced to me, there is some sort of federally mandated 80k mile warranty on any part that has something to do with the emission control - PCM being one of them. They are going to replace the PCM free of charge under warranty. BOOM! Dealer also confirmed it is safe to drive the car normally with this CEL. |
Hell yeah! |
But can you drive it like an asshole? |
That's awesome man. Where did you take it? The guy I bought my 6 from is a tech at either the Deer Valley or Peoria dealer (one of those silly-far ones). |

Barry was the service manager there. AWESOME dude. Especially after having a terrible experience at Camelback Mazda (overfilled engine oil by almost a quart). ASU grad?? |
yessir.... a couple years back. I haven't dealt with Camelback Mazda for the 6, though I did buy a 350z from them right after graduation. |
