PTP windage tray and BSD

i got around to doing this project on friday. it was pretty simple...just tedius. there are a thousand bolts on that damn oil pan. when you think you have them all and start prying the pan, and it wont come off....look around, there is another bolt. then repeat until you get all of them !! once the bolts are all off the pan comes of very easily with nothing more than a flat screwdriver. the hammer in plug from PTP is great and simple to install. i just put a dab of gray silicone on it and smashed that bitch in there !! then i installed the new baffle/windage tray in the oil pan. again super easy. simply remove the bolts holding the original end baffles off, then install the new full size piece using the original bolts/holes. nothing to it !! i drove the car today trying to shake out some of the bugs... (still a few left, i did about 5 projects over winter) and it drives smoother than inticipated. my car always has some vibed/noise from my stiff TRZ mounts, and i heard the BSD mod adds vibration so i was expecting it to feel like a Harley ! now the last time the car was driven it was november, so its been a while... the car actually feels smoother than i remember. maybe i am just nuts, but i dont feel any extra vibes that for sure. the car definately revs quicker though. that is VERY noticeable. it jumps into boost faster as a result too. overall... great mod i think. i didnt buy it for the free revs though. i bought it because many people believe the BS is the cause of blown engine on higher power cars. oh... the car also takes just over 7 quarts of oil to fill now !!

What kinda gasket maker did you use? I've notice everyone using the grey version.
I like to use the RED RTV Gasket maker on all my vehicles.

I used grey. It is designed for areas with a high torque seal (lots of close spaced bolts) and it is also much more oil resistant than most sealants. It is ideal for oil pans IMO.

i have some stuff from volvo that i love i use it on my personl engine reseals now, its not messy at all and it only takes a small amount to seal timing cover or oil pan etc. its pretty pricey though.

Nice mod I think i'm gonna do this eventually too.

Is it called "right stuff" and come in a pressurized can like cheese whiz ? That is the best shit ! Too pricey though.

no its not, its a volvo sealant, its red and thin and looks like glue it take shardly any of it to seal it its no where near as messy and with only the little bit you use you don't get the sealant on the outside when the pieces are fitted together.

Granted this stuff is about 60 bucks a tube if you were to pay for it.

the stuff your thinking of is like what honda uses where it comes out of a larger nozzle and is gray./

I ended up just using good old permaseal ultra gray. It seems to be doing the job. I gooped the hell out of it to be sure. I made sure it oozed out slightly all the way around. That way i know i didnt miss a spot !!

no mine looked really good. i have seen posts about heat discoloration by others, but not here. my car has about 30k HARD driven miles on it, and it came out looking good as new. i also wanted to comment about the oil in the pan. there is actually very little that gets trapped and doesnt come out when you drain it. i would say maybe a 1/4 quart. i also had very little grime in my pan. i have seen others who have needed 2 cans of brake cleaner to get all the crud out. again mine was very clean. i use penzoil platinum oil and change every 5-7k if anyone is interested.

i used grey rtv

TRU-BOOST 03-23-2009 05:31 PM

Now that i've put some miles on it i can notice some vibration increase. Its onky when hard on the throttle between 4-5500k rpm. Not at all horrible, but it is there.
