Racing Beat (Single Tip) Catback Installed

In keeping with the "sleeper" look for my car I knew I wanted an exhaust that was as close to stock in both looks and sounds. Reviews had shown that the Cobb and Racing Beat catbacks were the quietest available for the genwons. Well I decided to go with the cheaper of the two. However, I ran into one issue. I looked everywhere and couldn't find a good review of the Racing Beat exhaust with the single tip option. Well I was on Ebay and happened to find a deal I had to jump on. So here I am with my review.............

So where do I begin? This catback is immaculate. The muffler and resonators are crazily (is that a word?) larger than stock.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB2640x480.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB3640x480.jpg

Install is simple. Between hacking the stocker and installing this one I had everything complete in less than 2hrs

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB9640x480.jpg

The single tip section of the exhaust actually slides over the muffler section and is held in place by a clamp

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB4640x480.jpg

The only complaint I have is that this tip sits a little further out from the bumper, then stock but I can get used to it.....

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB7640x480.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/...RB6640x480.jpg

Other than that I like the looks......

Now I know that's all and well but you guys want to know how it sounds right??? Well first off I tried to record it for you but none of my recording devices do it any justice. The closest example I can say is look up the vids of the Racing Beat dual tip exhaust. They use the exact same muffler section. What I can tell you is this, this thing is QUIET!!! Like SERIOUSLY really quiet!! From idle all the way to WOT I hear the engine noise more than this thing. With the windows down it does have a nice subtle growl when the gas is being applied but even then its not louder than stock by much. So in my opinion if your like me and don't want a system that screams, "hey PO PO look at me," this is the one for you. If your looking for something that will give you a more aggressive sound this ain't it. Let me just put it this way, I've seen a few reviews from the dual tip guys that say they want to cut out the little resonator just to make it louder.....I like mine just where it is. Quiet.

Racing beat makes some beautiful products. I had their catback on my protege5. Sounded really good with a catted midpipe and a race header.

With a quiet catback system like this, it allows you to remove the restrictions up front without the obnoxiousness of a turboback exhaust.

GOT 2RBO 09-07-2012 10:12 PM

when in the hell did they make the single tip? I've had the dual tip for over 2 years, and didn't even know they offered a single tip version. Very nice!

When you say quiet, that is an understatement. It was TOO quiet for me. I ended up having the massive chambered muffler removed, and installed a magnaflow 3" turbo muffler in it's place. Deep, aggressive, and loud enough now. Racing beat does make nice products, though!

Nice, I didn't even know it was released in single tip! I might see if they can sell just the rear tip section so I can replace my dual tip.

Too quite for me also, I had the resonator removed and welded in a straight pipe, it sounds pretty mean like this now.

Quality on the RB exhausts are top notch I was very impressed.

I run the dual tip and i love it.

Lex 09-10-2012 07:53 AM

How does the weight compare to stock?

Man just looking at the directions the ONLY difference between the too is that rear section. In fact this single tip system comes with instructions for the dual tip ones LOL.

Hmmmmm good question Lex, honestly it was light enough for me to install it on my own. HOWEVER, if I had to guess because of the MASSIVE muffler if I had to guess I'd put it right around the same weight if not a few pounds heavier. Im not sure how much the stocker weighs but if it helps, the box the Racing beat came in (with everything including packing material inside) was weighed at 44lbs by UPS

If you buy a single tip I'll buy your dual tip.

@Novej I made a thread too, only I had a problem.

http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...le-tip-124231/

What didn't you like about the stock exhaust? I'm thinking about going to stock, but because I bought my car with an aftermarket exhaust, I really don't know how it sounds.
Does the stocker have a drone I hear sometimes here on MSF?
Also, does your Racing Beat have an annoying drone between 2700-3000 rpm?

Edit: btw your's looks great.

Man I'm not gonna lie, the tip section on mine is pushed back as far as it can go because of that very reason, (yeah that rear hangar is pushed back as far as it can go too). When I get time I'm going to cut about an inch off the end of that pipe for the muffler section that the tip section goes over (where you put the clamp). I suggest you do the same. Until then just push that tip section back as far as you can and tighten the clamp down (the hangar is pretty thick rubber. Mine is showing no wear so far). Your exhaust should look like mine (which even now still sticks too far out for my taste) if you do that......unless our bumpers really are THAT different

As far as the stocker, I had to finish the exhaust. I'm currently running a UR metal substrate catted downpipe connected to a Corksport racepipe. I wanted to finish the 3" piping all the way back. With this combination and stock exhaust I had drone quite a bit. However, since putting the racing beat catback on, honestly I haven't noticed it anymore. Man I hope this works out for you. I'll take pics after my little modification is made!

Thanks for the reply. IMO your exhaust looks perfect to me and I wouldn't change it, I personally think the stock exhaust sticks too far in, but that's a matter of preference.

There's not much I can do except cutting it, it's sitting to the front as much as possible, it really is the difference between bumpers.

Although I do think that our exhausts could be a little bit more upwards toward the bumper. It seems to have to same space as mine. Mine is about 2.5 centimeters from the bumper. Racing Beat told me: "We provide clearance between the tip and bumper valance to prevent contact under extreme conditions and to prevent heat from damaging the bumper valance."

Could you please do me a favor and measure how much space between the bumper and the exhaust there is with you?

Also, I don't know if you had your complete exhaust system stock at one point, but if you had, can you remember if it was louder then your current setup? Or that it had annoying drones or something?

If your rubber hanger is already positioned to the front as much as possible, wouldn't you have a problem when you cut it where the clamp goes?

Racing Beat adviced me to cut a piece between the hangers and the tip, so if I do decide to keep this exhaust, that's where I'm gonna cut it.

Really man, IMO your exhaust looks perfect, but if you do decide to cut it, I'm looking forward to see the pics.

Peace

I love my cobb, i do wish it was a bit louder sometimes, but it sounds great, if these compare anything to the cobb i bet it sounds good.

Thanks for the pics and such

I definately agree with raising the exhaust tip UP some. I think that could be fixed with simply finding a shorter rubber hangar, which I have been searching for, for days now. I'll try to measure it when I get home. As far as the stock exhaust man, now that I've put some miles on this exhaust I honestly feel like stock was a little louder (then again it didn't have such a huge freaking MUFFLER LOL). I can defiantely say it droned more. I can not say it enough this thing is SUUUUPER QUIET I don't even hear it with the windows down over the engine noise. I love it. All the performance with none of the "hey look at me" factor. Winning in my books.

I have to admit, this exhaust is really starting to grow on me :) Apart from the little droning when I slowly accelerate between 2700-3000 rpm, it really is pretty damn quiet. IMO that's the fun part about this car, good performance rapped in a sleeper look, which would be ruined by a loud exhaust.

So I think I'm going to stick with it and going to cut it. Hope it comes out looking good. I will post the results.

The shorter rubber hangar is a great idea, I will look for it too, if you find one please let me know.

Racing Beat FTW lol.

Stock is obviously quiet, and you will lose performance more than likely by going back to stock.

As for the fitment, if you buy a used OEM exhaust chances are it will be cut since the oem exhaust is a one piece bulky thing. So make sure you find a very good welder to install it or it will probably leak and sound like a fart can.

I say stick with aftermarket there are tons of good setups on the market

I see you fixed your little issue in your thread. Glad everything worked out for you. I haven't cut mine yet. But its gonna happen LOL!

PS did you cut or push the rear hangar back???

Raymond 09-24-2012 04:52 PM

The hangar was already pushed to the front as much as possible, so the only option was cutting it.
I had it cut (like Racing Beat suggested) between the hangar and the tip. I took out 5 centimeters, which was the maximum i could take out.
The guy who cutted it was really great, he used lasers to cut it and shit, and the weldings were perfect, a lot better then RB's weldings.

I'll say it again, IMO your exhaust looks great, I think the stocker sticks in too much, but if you do want to cut it, make sure the welder is a good stainless steel welder, because if he doesn't use stainless steel weldings, they are gonna rust overtime, and your tip can fall off lol.

I'm still looking for the shorter rubber hangar and I'll let you know if I find one, please let me know if you do.

Anyways, enjoy the sound and best of luck if you're gonna cut it.

I have one of these badboys on order, and can't wait to install it. It will be bolted up to my UR catted down pipe and resonated test pipe. I'm hoping it will have a very subtle, but deep growl. Lol. Thanks for the inspiration!

Can anyone confirm that the stock catback can be removed, without cutting it in half? I would rather not, if I do not have to.

Yes it can, I think you will like the exhaust, enjoy it.

Dude just cut it trust me on this one ;).................I mean unless you don't mind dropping the entire rear subframe :D

Boost_creep 10-05-2012 07:39 AM

Then cut it, I shall.
Thanks for the info!

Sorry for the bump, just really curious if @Novej has cut his exhaust and/or found a shorter rubber hangar

Not yet....turns out muffler shops that can actually weld worth a shit are few and far between out here. I decided moving the rear hangar back an inch will be better for me as the rear section still manages to shift back when I push it all the way forward and try to tighten the clamp down. So cutting an inch off won't work for me as the rear section would still work its way back do to the exhaust hangar....
