Rattling noise in the motor on cold starts help!! So I'm having some Internal engine rattling noise on cold start ups, after I drive my car and shut it off and then start it a couple minutes later its gone, but if I haven't driven my car in an hour or so it does it when I start it does anyone have any ideas or previous experience with the problem Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
possible that its the VVT actuator ... does it sound like this? |
noisy engines make noise dont worry about it until u find a puddle of oil under car |

well if its the vvt actuator and your going to get that replaced ... u might as well replace everything you have to remove to replace it. VVT actuator + washer Timing Chain Chain Tensioner Chain guides oh and your going to need timing tools to time the motor after everything is put in. i believe there is a vender on here that sells this package with all the required parts and tools. |
Does it damage the motor at all Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
Yes. Your motor is damaged. The tensioner is not holding the chain anymore. Worst case scenario, you skip timing and fubar your motor. Fix it. Mazda quotes the job at ten hours labour. |
Ya I don't exactly have $1,000+ to drop at a dealer right now... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
Then you have a few choices A- Fix it yourself B- Pay the dealer or a shop to fix it C- Dont drive it until you can afford option B D- Drive it and hope you dont zoom zoom boom. |
My car has been doing this for quite a long time...if my timing is already advanced because of my tune is it still possible to skip? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
We're not talking about ignition timing. Lol. This is cam timing. If the chain has no tension and is just slapping around in there, it could skip, and start bending valves and destroying your head. |
I say drive it till your timing chain jumps and blow your motor. It seems to me that you are leaning this direction anyway so I think this is the choice you will go with regardless of all the good advice given in this thread. |
I appreciate the advice, I just don't have the funds to take care of it...how hard of a job is it on my own? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
Count on at least ten hours. I'm in the same boat and it looks as though I'm going it alone. |
The parts are right underneath the valve cover aren't they? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
Lol. The whole side cover of the motor has to come off. Chains needs replacing. Tensioner needs replacing. Vvt. Could do guides as well. Engine needs to be retimed which requires tools. Cdfp has to come off to time the engine. Etc. It's about a 10 hour job. |
I forgot about the chain lol damn that sucks bad... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
Yup. Tech/Sales@EM C can help out huge on parts and timing tools though. |
yea its kind of a hectic job to do ... quick how-to run down for ms3 -set motor to tdc -jack up passenger side of motor, remove passenger side mount -remove accessories belt, then remove water pump/steering and pulleys -remove all the bolts on the timing cover and pry off timing cover -put in cam alignment tool so cam doesn't move -release tension on the chain and remove -replace VVT, tensioner, chain, etc .... -scrape off and re-silicon timing cover and put back on -reinstall all accessories/pulleys and belt, crank pulley to timed position -remove all timing tools and start her up u can ask independent shops and see how much they charge, just make sure they time the motor properly. |
I live in utah and rallysport directs hq is down here so maybe they'll be able to do it Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
I had this repaired about a month ago on my MS6. Total cost was $977.71 I was lucky enough to have a Zurich warranty that covered it. Warranty labor time should be around6.7 hours. Total labor on mine was $739.63 at $95.99 an hour. There was one hour diagnosis too. Car was repaired at at a Mazda Dealer. I'd rather fork over the dough when a problem arises than be stranded with a band-aid fix. Also if it's repaired at an authorized dealership they'll back it up if a part fails or workmanship was an issue. Just sayin |
I'm running catless dp and last time I dealered my car they called emissions on me and I got fucked hardcore Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk |
