recommended clutch? clutch went out at 64k miles..dealer wants 3400 for clutch/fly wheel. local mechanic who does high performance work is willing to do it for 500 labor + parts. one he linked me is 07-13 Mazdaspeed3 SPEC Staged Clutch Kits: JSC Speed for daily driving no racing, maybe a lil hard driving when i get down on it.. is this ok or a little much? any other recommendations? this is another one i seen linked in another forum 21212226428 - Clutch Kit - ES#41097 car is 2010 ms3 |
You will need to get a new flywheel or have your dual mass flywheel rebuilt. Don't just slap a new clutch on it. The spec clutch and the oem clutch will work with a fidanza light weight flywheel or with spec's flywheel. Both will have a bit of chatter but will be more reliable than the dual mass. Act clutch kits include a flywheel but their clutches only work with act flywheels. $500 for labor is a great deal. I would suggest just get the act street disc clutch with the streetlite flywheel if you don't have big power goals. ACT ZX5-HDSS Clutch Kit Performance Street Disc Spring Centered Mazdaspeed 3 6 MS3 MS6 If you do have some power goals then the 6 puck sprung will be a good option. Its more of an on off switch from a stop though so if you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic it could become annoying. http://www.edgeautosport.com/act-clu...wheel-ms3-ms6/ They are both offered with a lighter flywheel choice as well if you prefer. |
excuse my ignorance but whats difference between regular flywheel and lite? |
The factory flywheel is extremely heavy on our cars as it is dual mass. (26lbs) Dual mass flywheels have 2 major parts and use springs to further dampen the driveline. The problem is that the springs and the flywheels themselves are notorious for failure with sprited driving or added power. The performance flywheels we can get for our car are much lighter because they are a traditional 1 piece design(fidanza is technically 2 pieces). Fidanza & spec will be the lightest (11lbs fidanza Not sure of spec) as they are aluminum with a replaceable steel friction surface. This will create the faster throttle response and quicker shifting. But from a dead stop your engine will loose a little bit of inertia that is a benefit of a heaver flywheel. If you autocross or road race you will want the lighter flywheel. Dont be afraid of this option if you just drive on the street, it wont be a problem. Also I should mention you will have the most chatter / noise with this option. Act has 2 steel flywheels. The prolite (15.7 lbs)is their light weight steel 1 piece flywheel. It is lighter than stock but heavier than the fidanza. This is a good in between choice flywheel for everything but will give up a bit of inertia for drag racing. It is probably the most popular choice flywheel for the mazdaspeed 3 among autocross racers imo. The streetlite (21lbs) is heaver than the prolite but it is still lighter than the stock flywheel. This is the better choice if you drag race or only street drive the car. It will produce the least amount of chatter out of the aftermarket flywheels. There are other options but these are the most common. |
I actually liked the engagement of the ACT sprung 6 puck with prolite wheel better then stock but I also have not driven one in stop and go traffic so I can't comment on that. |
Edge also has several southbend clutch/flywheel setups. I believe I may use one in the spring as mine slips under heavy boost. |
