Default Redline MT90 Thoughts?

I picked up some Redline MT90 gear oil from summit racing for $9.95 a quart. Should be getting it by friday. Gonna hit up vato zone or pep boys for the fill tube.

Just curious on your thoughts on it after some use.

Is it a pain to change out or as easy as a regular oil change?

Noticeable difference in shifting?

TIA

It's much smoother when warmed up. Before it warms up (especially when it's cold out), shifting is pretty rough. It's worth the tradeoff if you ask me.

dale nixon pretty much summed it up. and honestly, i think it's easier than an oil change. took no time at all to do.

Luckily I live in southern California, it doesn't get too cold here.

For the north east (15*f winters), does it make sense to use MT-90, or use OEM spec tranny fluid?

you're fine to use mt-90 in a cold climate. just let the tranny warm up before romping as previously stated.

get a 24mm socket and don't touch the angled bolt of death!

What are the benefits of MT-90 over OEM transmission fluid?

From my understanding and what people have told me is that the shifting is super smooth because it's a synthetic gear oil.

Either way, I 've heard nothing but great things and I know a lot of people are running this in their Mazdas.

It feels about the same to me when cold, but there definitely is a difference once it's warmed up.

I've been using it for about a year now and it's been fine for me. I did notice a little more, "wah wah wah wah wah" sound when I turn the wheel sharply and I'm going slow. Don't know what that's about, but I heard it's normal. Shifting is smooth when warm, but a little knotchy in the winter time until you've driven a little while.

I'm pretty sure the wah wah's from turning the wheel to lock is normal. My car does it too.

I'll second a more pronounced "wah wah wah" sound when you downshift into first (low speed, parking lot obviously). I think I even turn some heads because of it I think. I don't think that has anything to do with turning the wheel to lock, just the synchro noises at low gear / highish rpm coasting.

I remember right after I swapped the fluid, it did seem to shift a bit more nicely. It felt a little bit smoother. It wasn't a night-and-day thing, and the OEM fluid is almost as good, honestly. But it's such an easy thing to do, why not do it? Just make sure to buy a $3 tranny fill tube (funnel with plastic tube attached) or you can go to the trouble of making your own thing.

I live near San Jose and I guess it's a little rougher to shift for the first 2-3 stop lights, then it warms up. (Someone mentioned california.)

Hmmm. The wah wah noises I'm hearing when I turn the wheel to lock and move must just be the power steering pump then. I don't downshift into first so, I can't elaborate on the tranny sounds.

If the shifting is a bit rough at first, that's fine. I don't even touch boost until the engine is at operating temps anyway.

Thanks again everyone for the input.

The MT90 is an improvement over the factory fluid and a no-brainer to do. I put mine in within a couple of thousand miles of buying the car. When I get to about 20K or so I will swap out for the synthetic Ford fluid that is supposed to be really good.

Yeah that's probably just the power steering. The engine revs up too by a couple hundred RPM when you turn the wheel at a stop as well.
