Why would engine braking wear out the clutch? The only way this would happen is if you never rev match on downshifting.

Rev matching does not eliminate clutch wear, it reduces it and makes for smoother downshifting. Up shifting through all 6 then downshifting is just double the wear on everything.

So much conflicting information I've read on this subject over the years.

I rev match on just about every down shift! It is significantly easier on the entire drivetrane than just letting out the clutch and making the revs catch up. I don't really see how anyone could disagree with this. Just try down shifting w/out rev matching and you can hear and feel the clunk from the drivetrane catching up.

THANK YOU! You have no idea how many PM's and e-mails I get about this very issue. "I hear a clunk when I down shift from 3rd to second at 35 MPH" Do you rev match? NO. Sick!

Those of you that are new to this car or manuals in general Trust us on this one.

Man, you got balls considering that was your first attempt at rev-matching.

If you guys are so worried about the dang clutch buy a car with an automatic transmission! Geeezes.

Someone was talking about "clutch or brakes...which costs more"....if I need to stop extremely fast...I have braked AND engine braked with good effect. Its not a habit, but I have to tell you...when I did it I wasnt thinking..."wonder how much my clutch will cost to replace".

I think we are beating a dead clutch!

I wonder how we all survived driving 4 speeds, "three on the tree", and "rock crushers"...before this forum!?? Its ok...breaaaaaathe...your clutch will tell you if you are screwing up...as in..."man this is a herky jerky ride" coming from your passenger! Ha!
