If you haven't blown, is it possible to swap out the stock rods for aftermarket ones without pulling the motor?

Doesn't seem to be. The timing cover and components seem to be the biggest difficulty. There's a fair amount of stuff that needs to come off the block and as i'm learning (i used to want to do it in the car like you too), it's best to just do it right, and pull the block. You should really send it to a machine shop to at least check the deck and cylinder bores and crank and stuff. Esp if your going to put in the money for upgraded internals.

You can swap pistons and rods with the engine in the car, if you have very many miles it wont run worth a shit because it wont hold a good compression and unless your very lucky it will probably vibrate very badly, but it is definitely possible if you want to do things absolutely the hardest way possible.

You need your block machined prior to installing new parts.

More of a reason to limit torque, low RPM load, detonation, and flat foot shifting on the stock bottom end.

EDIT: Some cars will have poorer tolerance stack up (not just the rods, but all tolerances) than others and those are more susceptible to this problem.
I agree. I have a stage3 Neon SRT-4 and an '09 MS3. Stock for stock, the MS3 is a much better car overall, BUT, the Neon SRT-4 internals and the bottom end seem to hold up much better when modded..... I may not be doing much to the MS3... don't have to...
