This is exactly why I changed the oil in our cx5 myself this week.

At 9:00 at night

After working all day

In the dark

While it was 35 degrees outside

On a gravel driveway

It was less work than making sure they didn't fuck it up. Though it takes 0-w20 so at least they couldn't have put something too thin in.

They not only overfilled it, they didn't drain the old oil first. Tear them a new asshole and have them flatbed tow your car in and watch them fix it.

And then, never go back. Ever. Again. To them or any other dealer.

It was also 5w 30.

Now I'm all fired up at Comic Con... Damn you, Geoff!

You'd be surprised how many times I see this.

The ms3 with a spin on comes from the factory with an n/a mazda 6 filter... I would imagine they use fill specs for the larger capacity filter.

That is my only semi-logical guess @ how they fuck this up over and over.

Could be worse, my dad's cx7 blew up because they drained and forgot to refill his oil.
Unfortunately he was getting a service the day he left on a road trip

Quick update. Vehicle was cold when I checked it before. Checked again and it was still overfilled by the same margin as the OP. I ended up using a long hose and siphoned some oil out from where the dipstick goes. I removed a little less than a cup of oil and the dipstick now reads right at the full mark.

So if your oil is coming up to the bends on the dipstick you have almost a cup of extra oil. (roughly)

I just skimmed this thread. In Mazda's book it states every disi takes 6.0 quarts regardless of model/year. Which is a guideline to check it after you fill it. Every car is different and none is the same.

6 quarts overfills my motor too. I usually run 5.7 quarts. That's safe for me.

OP don't sweat it. I've ran into my techs overfilling skyactiv' like it's nobody's business. I've actually ran tests with our reels at work too. The sky 2.5 takes 4.8 quarts. Our reels will vary from car to car with the same motor.

The dealership is in the wrong here. I check all oil levels after a oil change. People have became so lazy it irks me. How hard is it really ya know?

By the way, Mazda is lying to you. Overfilling a engine will damage it overtime. We all know that. My car was overfilled when I baught it. I immediately changed the oil. It did not damage the vehicle in any way so you are safe.

My suggestion is to DIY. Nobody cares but you and you only.

Well, in this regard all cars are identical: they need 6 quarts/5.7 liters of oil when filling them with a new oil filter (which should be changed at every oil change anyway) and if you still have the balance shaft.

The only thing that may differ is how even is the car when you dump the oil and how much of it remains in the engine/sump.

Also keep in mind that the dipstick is a bit shorter and when the engine has the right (and maximum) amount of oil you may see the oil level 2-3mm above the max hole.

5.7 quarts instead of 6 is perfectly fine though and the engine will feel no difference in running with 5.7 versus 6.

Some people don't want to spend $35 on a drain plug valve, but I think the http://www.qwikvalve.com/fumoto-f106sw-valve.html is well worth it. If you overfill, you can simply crack the valve open and drain a bit.
@nindoja; bought a "blown motor" speed6 that we drained no less than 10 quarts out of, with probably another quart inside the TB/IM/gunked in the head. It looked like an obvious double fill fubar, and the drain plug was rounded off. Once we drained the oil and replaced the .052 gapped plugs, the car fired right up.

I'm diggin' all the activity! Thanks for the contributions everyone.

The car seems to working fine since I've had the dealership top it off to the right levels.
I plan to pull the plugs and seafoam this weekend. I think the plugs may be gunked up a little. I say this not because I have regular symptoms, but because I did find oil in the intake behind the PCV hose (I think that's the right hose).

As aforementioned, I did experience what I believe to have been some ignition issues.
Anything else I should try cleaning while I'm in there?

And I apologize I haven't done this sooner. Some dick hit my rear driver door in the parking lot of my office. I've been dealing with insurance and repair shops lately...

I let the car sit overnight and it still took 5.7 quarts. including filter. I only put the plug back in when its dripping and there is no oil stream. On a hoist, at work.

If I put 6 exact quarts in like the ms3 document states. its overfilled above the max line.

The proper way to check oil is to let it sit too. It will usually rise after you let the oil drain into the pan.

I check mine immediately after shutting the car off and its overfilled above max. 5.7quarts takes care of that and if i let the car sit with 5.7quarts in it and drain for 10min its above max.. still

I've been filling at 5.25-5.4 quarts for 5 years. Pull an oil pan and all their infinite glory.... There is still a quart left behind after a night sitting to drain. Not questioning your ability.... just sayin is all

If you put the car on jack stands you need to lift the front a bit higher.

...even with my car on ramps and draining overnight, it won't take a full 6 quarts.

Here's what the plugs looked like!
Pretty mucked up. Cleaned 'em (made sure to avoid the iridium tip) and regapped .030 for good measure (they were all already gapped right around there from teh factory).

Car seems to be running fine now. No issues since I've done this.

Lesson learned. Do your own damn oil changes...

The plugs should be gapped at 0.024"-0.027", per Mazda's updated specs for the MZR DISI.

Edit: fixed gap specs.

I was actually going from memory. The correct specs for the engine are 0.024"-0.027."

It's hard to say if it's the cause of any problems without data logs to show what's happening.
