Default Threw a Leg out of Bed

Yep. Blew my motor travelling from Bris back to Moranbah. After cruising for around 3 hours on the highway slowed down to go through a small town. Accelerating back up in 5th leaving town, boom! Not even aggressive on the throttle. The carnage was massive. Fist sized hole through the block, litres of oil through the exhaust, melted piston and sundry other shrapnel went through the turbo. All fixed now. Sourced a motor the next day and am up and running again. But I must say my ringpiece now puckers like a blind knife-throwers assitant's everytime I accelerate in 5th gear. Someone figure this shit out please. Enough is enough.

Details:

EVENT:
Tank full of BP Ultimate (98 octane)
50/50 water/ meth mix
Cruising for around 3 hours on the highway
Slowed down to go through a small town
Gentle acceleration back up to speed in 5th leaving town (95 to 100 kmh)
No prior symptoms or problems, car running great
No 4 piston (and to lesser extent No 3) massive failure (broken rod, melted piston)
Fist sized hole through the block, oil through the exhaust and intercooler
Shrapnel through the turbo

FIX:
Replacement long block and turbo
Time for repair 1 week
Cost total $7k

ENGINE MODS:
CPE TBE (high-flow cat)
Forge BPV
Mazdaspeed CAI
Snow Stage 1 W/M Injection (injection starts at 4 psi boost and 2500 rpm)
Xede Interceptor (18.5 psi, timing advance 5 degrees)
PG V2 Turbo Mani
COBB FMIC
Dynoed at 233 kw atw

Thanks for the kind words all. Good Aussie mechanics. They actually said it was a good car to work on. They had to get the intercooler flushed out as well as oil got in there (as well as everwhere else).

if you had shrapnel in your turbo and intercooler it sounds like your turbo failed causing the end failure.

There was oil in the intercooler and damage to the turbine wheel from small bits of some sort.

sounds like the turbo failed or a chunk of the piston/rod made its way into the exhaust stream and busted up the turbo that way.

Unfortunately no monitoring at the time. No knock when tuned but no idea of what the situation was at the time of the event

Dude that was probably it. I have tested it 5 degrees is to much you can get away with it for a little while but you proabaly devopled knock at close to 19psi that is to much. your engine was probably real hot form the trip and you where advancing 5 degrees and boom...

I can garentee you from my experiance that even though you didn't get knock when you tuned 19psi with 5 dgrees advance is REALLY pushing the limits... I did this and had to pull back shortly after cuase started getting knock. Since you didn't have a dash hawk you had no way of knowing...

Appreciate the input on this but I am keeping an open mind for now. I am looking forward to the results of the work Jon is doing and am more than a little interested in the hydrolock theory. My experience is so similar to many others where an engine has popped on a long trip and these others were not to my knowledge advanced by 5 like I was. So let's wait and see how this unfolds

Yeah I'm not saying it was that for sure. I was just going off what I experianced. The reason the most I advance is 2-3 dgrees at 17psi for daily driving and when I up the boost I don't advance is cuase I devoped kr. This devolped over time as I noted with the dash hawk (plus I do data logs just for fun all the time) Thats how I discovered what was happening you should get a dashhawk if your going to continue to advance your timeing bro! I could see if you where at 5 degrees for a period of time it getting outa hand...

Hey Cosmic,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, although you were at the top of my short list for potential engine destruction, you have to admit you were running on the razors edge with your tune, anyway glad you were able to get it sorted out so quickly.

Dammit, there goes the perfect record for the Xede too, sounds like you got a bad case of knock (in my opinion), I know there are dozens of theories flying around the forums at the moment though, but one things for sure BUY A DASHHAWK just in case it was knock related you may be half a chance of saving the motor if it ever happens again.

Have copied this over to the mazdaspeed-3-engine-transmission-driveline section.

FYI this came over from the Australian section.

Thought a few more may see it here...

Timing advance on any forced induction engine is very risky!

[QUOTE=(18.5 psi, timing advance 5 degrees)[/QUOTE]

IMHO it seems like the majority of these cars that blow the motors have 2 things going on... more boost than stock and part throttle knock issues. Knock is a engine killer in any car, especially a turbo car. And I think the engine cant handle the extra boost. But thats just my opinion though.

Glad to see you had a quick turn around.

Its not like he floored it in 5th. I think the 5 timing has a lot to do with this. It has been found by many that not only does timing seem to do very little, it also adds a lot of stress to this car.

Sorry for the loss man, 7k is not an easy bill to swallow heh. Also, the only WOT Kr that I get is in 5th gear.

P.S. I hate you Mark, I stared at your avatar for probably 10 minutes... was almost late for work.

I do the same, 5th on the freeway is a fun gear...it seems to pull harder than every other gear, at least for me. I just make sure to ease into WOT and make sure that I'm at > 4k RPM before starting to accelerate. Once I get my DH, I'll find out how bad this is for my car.

Even with no mods and 93 octane my DH shows I get knock if I get into the throttle at lower RPM's.

sorry for the lost mate, how many miles on your car when it blown.
I don't think any time of shifting or procedure that cause the blown engine. We need to stop blaming how a person shift or which gear they are in when engine is blown.

this is the second engine that I know of that runs meth and blown.
Was your car tune for your mod?

I am pretty sure he advanced timing 5 degrees which seems to be a big dont on this car. 98 octane over there is like 93 or something...

Ok so he added 5deg on top of stock timing, that would be a no no without
higher octane in my book.
