Unprecidented Knock Alright, I really haven't made any changes to the car at all in the last few weeks. I still have not began tuning, just running the stock tune, SB isn't even plugged in, and haven't had any real problems/concerns up to this point. Just recently though, I'm getting A LOT of knock. Even OUT OF gear! If I rev it at idle, fully warmed up, to about 3,000 RPMS I get a reading of 2.5 degrees, consistently. I even got 1.1 normally backing out of a parking spot today at bashas. What the fuck? Very, very light acceleration, like a Prius.. All these readings are pretty consistent, worth noting at least. First gear: 1.1 to start, goes up to about 3.2 by 3,000 RPMS. Second gear: least amount of knock, im not sure why, usually just 0.4-0.7 Third gear: Same as first Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth: If on the freeway/low traffic street cruising, if I even touch the gas in the slightest bit anywhere from 2,500rpms to 4,000 rpms, even to just MAINTAIN speed, I get at least 5 degrees, and it stays there, it just will work its way up to 9 degrees. If Im accelerating decently, which puts more load than I like to, then it doesnt knock too much. I did recently get gas, thinking that I may have gotten a bad tank, I added about 7 gallons of 100 octane yesterday and put about 30 miles on it today, nothing has changed. I think I ruled that out. Im just seeing if you guys have any suggestions of what I should investigate |
Faulty knock sensor? Sometimes the simplest solution is the best place to start... |
Just started doing this??? You have a built motor right?? Aftermarket noisy forged pistons?? Does it do it the same warmed up as cold?? |
No stock motor FFF. Knock is greater when cold, even worse than what I've described above. Oh, and it's worth mentioning that I have not actually HEARD any knock thus far, I've tried to listen though. My car is fucking loud though, and I don't know if I'm missing it, I've never heard it so I dont know how loud it really is. And Pharoh, definitely considering that.. I just dont want to buy another overpriced oem part =( |

Any chance some intercooler pipe or something vibrating against the block? Either the knock sensor is fucked up........ or more likely, the knock sensor hears something.......... You just need to figure out what it is. |
Is it audible? I wish I knew a solution. The first year I got 0.0 knock at all times. Lately while accelerating in 3rd I've been getting 5.6 - 6.7, I'd probably piss myself if I saw 9. |
Keep the suggestions coming guys, i need some brainstorming.. Quote:

something is likely vibrating against something else around the motor (bracket etc) or there's a deeper issue inside the motor. Is the knock sensor loose? If not torqued to spec it will show false readings. |
injector seals.. Didnt Darksun have knock on free revving.. and it was due to an injector seal? |

okay got the car running again today (had a new oil line made for turbo), did some driving around. I found one thing that was vibrating against the block, fixed that. Still having the same problem though. I filled up the rest of my tank (about 1/2) with 100 octane after driving around about 20 miles on the 91 octane. With 100 octane, knock count frequency is about the same, but the degrees that are getting registered are much less, they never really exceed 1.1 degrees. During normal driving around town, when accelerating from a stop light, in gears 1-4 my DH reads some kind of knock more often than not, it almost holds 0.4-1.1 the whole time until i lift to shift into the next gear, right when it engages it starts again. It also is still knocking while revving out of gear/reverse lawl. I have the PTP injector seals, which I do not think are sealing at all, because just after install my knock got much better and its gotten increasingly worse. |
ptp seals as in the original 10 million dollar washers he sold? |
I have been having the same kind of KR registering as well. It only happens under the lightest acceleration, and hard or WOT I see 0.0.... Its always right arounf 3000rpms, and my car is bolted, but I think I might have a bad driver side motor mount thats causing extra vibes. I thought I had the dreaded vibrating clutch but its actually coming from somewhere around the transmission mount, and the vibes I was feeling was from the floor board |
You need to lose those PTP seals like last month before they screw your head up.. |
So I got a little throttle happy last night in 4th gear getting on the freeway. I gave it maybe 50%-60% which is more than I have up to this point pretty much. I got into it a little above 4,000. I got to about 3psi and I got HUGE hesitation and audible knock, and the DH read 5.6 degrees at first and went up to 8.2 degrees. What the fuck man? Now I'm definitely thinking it's those damn injector seals. |
