Vibrating clutch update:

The dealer pulled the tranny out this afternoon and found that my two piece flywheel...(huh?) was loose. They're replacing the pressure plate, flywheel, T/O bearing, but they won't replace the clutch disk. He said he ordered a clutch disk and they'd give it to me at dealer cost.. no labor since they're already in there.. It's gonna cost me 148.00 for the clutch disk. No big deal.

There's always a chance that the flywheel is loose but wasn't causing the vibration and it's going to blow regardless. I dunno, he said the motor checked out perfectly.

It sounds like he is going to have them do it dont it...
Anyways I may have to change my clutch and flywheel out sooner then I thought just to see if I have the same problem.

bova 03-25-2009 06:10 PM

hell if i only had to pay $148 for a new clutch i'd do it.

Same here.

SharkDiver 03-25-2009 08:34 PM

You may get your car back in a week or so,please make sure you let us know if the vibrating is still there.

Thanks

Overboost3 03-25-2009 09:26 PM

I should get it back on Wednesday of next week.. and, I will be sure to update you. It won't leave the dealership if it's still vibrating. :)

06Speed6 03-26-2009 08:19 AM

Your clutch was loose? Holy bahls man, that thing could take a leg out.

wassup61 03-26-2009 08:38 AM

I have a few ACT kits in stock if you are interested.

Since they are doing everything and replacing the flywheel I would get a SPEC clutch if you plan to mod your car at all. It will cost you more than $148 but the SPEC clutch will last longer w/ higher HP. Me personally I have just installed the ACT clutch/flywheel but the dual mass flywheel is more DD friendly.

What clutch did you go with? The street or 4-6 puck?I havent made up my mind on what one to get.I like the full face disk but dont want to push the clutch to its tq limit.

socks 03-26-2009 11:42 AM

i got the 6puck sprung ACT.

The pedal is stiff. I havent really "tested it out" yet.

Can you ask your dealer what's non-warrantied cost of replacing the clutch? Just want to know what I'd be up against if I decided to go this route.

Thanks

Overboost3 03-27-2009 10:30 AM

I'll do my best to remember and report back.

MadOzodi 03-27-2009 11:43 AM

My dealer quoted me $1,701.00 to replace my pressure plate and clutch, including labor.

SharkDiver 03-27-2009 01:50 PM

There is a Atlas transmission around here that quoted me $380 to install a clutch,Check with some of your local trans places for a better price then mazda/ford.I still have not made up my mind if I will have someone do it or Ill just do it.

Most times the dealer will just drive the car down to the tranny specialist shop anyway and pocket the difference for doing nothing.

Speedn3 03-29-2009 09:56 PM

Can someone give me a link or part number for the spec clutch that's a step up from stock? Looks like the dual mass is better for dd?

Thanks

Overboost3 03-30-2009 04:20 PM

It looks like it was the flywheel. They replaced the flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing and clutch disk and no vibration. Like I said, I wonder if an out of balance flywheel is causing the engine failure.

I can't imagine any reputable dealer doing this.. What makes you think they would do that?

Looks like you caught a break! Enjoy!

Not so fast! Heh... Dealer to home is a 33 mile drive and by the time I got home the vibration is back, but not as bad as when I took it in. Weird!

The invoice states " 26234 no problem found can feel slight vibration with light pressure on clutch pedal, called tech line for assistance , as per tech line performed compression test, 1-184 2-174 3-187 4-180. OK. Checked piston hieght, OK even. Removed transmission to inspect, found two-piece flywheel with excessive play, replaced flywheel, pressure plate and customer clutch disk. Reassembled and rechecked , OK at this time"

I dunno what to do now.

The good news is that your piston heights were "ok". That means you don't have the feared bent rod...

So after using the car for a week or so now is the vibs as bad as before the new clutch or the same?

Overboost3 04-02-2009 10:58 AM

The vibration hasn't changed a bit. It is the same.

Darksun280 04-02-2009 11:23 AM

leave the car stock and wait for the bent rod fairy to visit you.

fbpem1 04-02-2009 11:33 AM

i'd be interested to know how they measured piston hieght, i want to see that tool...

I usually dip my dick in the spark plug hole....

Oh yeah this is the Tool they used to measure his piston height

So did the dealer just tell you to drive it and everything is fine or do you have to bring it back in?Also there are a few ways to check piston height,Since they said they checked it Im guessing the rods should be fine at this point.

Overboost3 04-02-2009 10:27 PM

The service manager told me to drive it. He said that this point they've done everything they can and if it blows, it blows.
I'm still being careful with it. I'm certain it will blow based on everyone's experience, I see no point in abusing the car.

Well if I was you I would hope it blew before the warranty is up so maybe abusing the car now is what you want to do.You dont want to be where I am with no warranty and having it blow.

Do you think a bent rod would cause a vibration? To me it dont seem like it would unless its hitting the sides of the cylinder walls or something.Im no pro when it comes to internals tho so that is why I ask.

yes

Could crank walk cause the vibs also?Ken from PG says that may be the problem also.
