Default Went out for beer and came back with this.

Went out to get some beer. As I was leaving the stop light right near my place I heard a loud thunk, then smelled raw fuel. Got home, popped the hood and then saw my engine puke out all its oil. I looked back down the road and saw a nice trail of oil.
I thought for sure I popped my block, but as I was walking back to my apt. I saw my oil drain plug on the ground. Stroke of fucking luck, as I new exactly what happened.
The monkeys i get to change my oil forgot to put a new crush washer on the plug and probably didnt tighten it enough.

Fortunately the place is close by. They came and put the plug back in, filled it with 5.7 qts oil and I took it back to the shop, no knock, no lights, no KR on the DH. They changed the oil again with the filter and credited me back for my last oil change.

Good outcome for a potentially shitty problem. And the moral of the story is make sure the fags that change your oil (yourself included) put a new crush washer on the plug.

This is why you man up and do that shit yourself.

And if you are going to say "Oh but I live in an apartment" then man up and go to the store and buy you some Wheel Ramps

Wheel RampsWheel Ramps

Dont be a darksun! Youll end up with an rearended Evo.

Got all the above, and used to do it. But its pretty fuckin ghetto to be out in my little carport changing the oil. The place I live in has a rule of no working on the car. My parking spot is right by the office. Oh and you forgot to include the required 2x6 chunks to get this car up on the ramps without craping the bumpers chin.

Oil starvation still fucked with the longevity of the motor though. Compression check bare minimum.

Actually all the oil stayed in circulation until the engine was shut off. But with only 24000miles on the odo in the last 4 years I'm not too worried about the longevity of the engine. Compression check will be done on wed. for shits and giggles.

Only 200 miles on the oil, been running PP 5/40 for the last 3 years, and I watched the oil drain into the can in the shops pit and watched the oil be dispensed from the barrel. No doubts about the process, this car has always been quick to dirty up the oil.

That's horrible, but it seems like your taking this lightly. I would be livid if a shop did that to my car.

Call me crazy but what was the loud thunk? Why would you smell gas? Accidents happen but I think I would be a little more upset with the shop. Hope all is okay (probably is). Good luck.

My apartment complex has a rule about not working on cars too. I don't care though and do all my maintenance on my car, my roomates car, my roomates g/fs car, my g/fs car etc. I got a garage with a bunch of tools with an air compressor and air tools coming after the holidays. Just because there is a rule doesn't mean they will enforce it.

Its better to take a chance to get yelled at by some maintenance dude at an appartment complex than having your motor vomit on the pavement.

Agreed. I like to be the one to christen my cars, not someone else. I had a friend that bought an 08 Evo from the dealership with 20k miles and from day 1 I was tellin him that the paint didn't look smooth from the front to the back. It definitely looked repainted. The dealership told him no accidents of any kind. Come to find out, through a lot of research - it was previously owned by a soldier and it has been essentially run over by a tank while parked on base. "One owner" don't mean shit.

Thunk was probably the drain plug hitting the floorpan, I imagine the gas was just crancase vapors...

I smell gas every time I walk past my hood... still can't find any leaks..

So do I and still have no leaks......

I would def. be mad at your shop for such a bad job on such and easy thing to do. Get that compression test done for peace of mind.

Yes the thunk was the plug hitting the undertray that they have been bending every time. I used to change my oil at home, then I moved to some upscale apts. here in Cali. Ive got a reputation to uphold, and the backyard mechanic isnt one of them anymore.
Interestingly, the thud was heard 2 stoplights away, almost 1000 ft from my parking spot, and i would think the drain plug would have fallen out well before the speedbumps.

I work in a pretty high stress, high stakes job, and have learned that getting mad at a company for one of thier underpaid monkeys fuckup doesn't solve much. Same tech did it to another guys minivan that was also there for a "leak".
Interestingly enough it was a Penzoil service station, no jiffypube.

I would go ape shit if that happened to my car! I would hunt down ever member of the responsible persons family. Who knows what has happened to your engine. Even though it runs well now doesn't mean it not going to crap out in 10,000 miles because of this.

Every apartment has this rule. But its really there for the beat up half torn apart POS cars, doing your oil (provided you dont spill shit) shouldnt be a problem, specially if you are a good tenant.

Just because there is a rule doesn't mean they will enforce it.

Its better to take a chance to get yelled at by some maintenance dude at an appartment complex than having your motor vomit on the pavement.
Yup....

It rubs the rubber lip, but it doesnt hurt shit. I use them because jacking and using stands takes longer and if need be Ill replace the rubber later but at my 6th oilchange using ramps shit still lookers pretty good. Middles getting a little burly from pavement rubs though.

lol....you have a reputation eh? you are going to risk some total dumb fucks working on your car because you dont want to look bad working on your car in your ritzy apartments...because we all know that if you have money you dont work on your car...you know, because it is beneath you...classy people pay other people to do stuff for them...if your apartments are as upscale as you say you probably should not even be driving a mazda around there anyway...im sorry but you sound like a douche

i have no problem with people that cant do their own shit because of lack of skills or time or whatever...but to not do it because you are afraid of what your neighbors will think? or because you think it will make you look cheap? come on....

Oil starvation don' get you till you try to go really fast. I suspect my motor had little to no oil in it for a week of driving and didn't spin the bearing till I did like a 150mph pull on the highway being a tool.

Not necessarily. I have seen seen other cars go air cooled 2.5 miles away from Jiffy Lube. When I was a mechanic, our shop was literally 2.5 miles from Jiffy Lube. They would shit themselves, and coast to the front door. Most common problems were not washer or loose bolts, but overtightened/stripped bolts that fell out. So they were almost out of oil as soon as they left the place.

Still if it happened to me my car would be getting a big time inspection from a mechanic making sure it was not fucked up.

I've changed my oil at least a couple dozen times and not replaced the crush washer yet. No need to until it leaks.

But you have at least reused the washer right? My point was: no washer=higher chance of loosening over tiime.

This is obviously a pointless battle, thank you for weighing in on my sexual orientation though. iirc I've done more dirty work and grunt work than you would care to hear about, so getting my fingernails dirty isnt my concern. Your insightful post did give me a great idea. Maybe I can start doing all my car maintenance in the back corner of the complex in front of the people that live there. Since they dont know me they obviously wont care.

WTF cares if I choose not to change my own oil? That wasnt the intent of this thread.

I skipped through.
As far as doing it yourself - If something did happen, that oil change place would've had to purchase a new engine... I like knowing a company with the money to do it would be responsible. Not only that, when you trade-in or sell, you'll have service records which exponentially increase the resale value.

And that's why I will never let anyone else change my oil. I've had the dealership screw it up like this too because they didn't tighten the drain plug.

On the whole crush washer thing, you don't have to replace it every you do the oil change unless you torque the shit out of it and crush it to oblivion. I've reused mine like 10 times already. If you do crush the washer, just a torch to heat it up and it will expend back to size ready to be crushed again. Fuck going to the dealership for new ones.

And what the fuck is it to you!? Why does it bother you so much? Does it make your image look bad? I live in Section 8 housing working my ass off. There's people here trying to get by making that dollar and can't afford to pay someone else to do the job. I just helped my neighbor replace his timing belt in 30* weather at his parking lot. He doesn't have money to have someone else do it because he needs to feed his family. It's shit like this that pisses me off. It's ok. You can keep putting us poor folk down, but we'll keep one fucking up your image at the parking lot.

Want something done right? Do it yourself.

Reputation? Thats full of lulz.

Unless the neck of the plug interferes with a full mate and thus does not present a proper mating surface this could be correct. But if the bolt is flush to the pan then its highly unlikely to come lose.

Sounds like the guy set the torque wrench to ounces instead of pounds.

Major difference of ripping apart a car where it cant be readily moved compared to a 10-20 minute upkeep job.

WTF cares if I choose not to change my own oil? That wasnt the intent of this thread.
Wow grats, but it is the point. You take your car to some place and they dont do it right. So, what? What was the point of the thread? How lucky you where that you didnt become darksun? Did you not expect to hear "Do it yourself"?

I had a line pop off an aftermarket oil cooler from a loose hose clamp while driving that pissed all 4.5 quarts out in about 10 seconds in a 1990 Nissan 240SX. Wound up driving about a half mile to a 7-11, valve lifters tapping away (they were hydraulic), to fix it and refill with oil. I was running Mobil 1 in it at the time. Retightened the hose, filled with new oil and that car went for another 30k miles before I sold it. As far as I know, it went for many more miles without issue. It had 160k on it when I sold it. So, the point is, you can lose all your oil and be fine, especially if you shut down quickly, which I didn't.
