Its better to take a chance to get yelled at by some maintenance dude at an appartment complex than having your motor vomit on the pavement.
I agree if the result is just getting yelled at by a maintenance guy, but something like this happened to my friend in his gated community in Florida. He had to change his clutch, so he and a friend decided to do it in the driveway. Half way through as the old clutch was removed, one of these old community commandos approached them with other members of the resident board. They ordered them to stop as they have specific rules in the association about doing any maintenance on cars in the community.

They didn't stop so they were issued a $1000 fine by the board that was going to be claimed against the rental deposit. This was eventually dropped after hiring a lawyer, but it was a pain in the ass.

Moral of the story, I'm not sure how serious your neighborhoods are about car work, but there are some with strict rules that are enforced by old people that have nothing better to do than spy on neighbors and give them a hard time. Its hard to believe that people don't have anything better to do than harass people trying to work on a project to save money or have fun

Did all my work in the back corner of the property..........thank you NRSpeed for giving me my balls back. Not a soul drove by and started at the Murse working on his car. Even put the car on ramps and tightened down all the chassis bolts and put on the new undertray and cleaned my shitty MSCAI filter. Still not going to change my own oil as disposal is a PITB.

Did notice the friendly lube guy put yellow marking goop around the oil drain plug to see if I would fuck with it.

Hey Javan, I'm in West San Jose, near Cupertino. Next time you don't want to do the oil change yourself, try the Midas at Prospect and Saratoga Ave. They do good work, and let you watch, look and inspect under your car if you ask nicely. So, while they change the oil, you can check your CV boots, sway bar bushings, etc. without laying on your back with a crawler. Just walk underneath while it's up on the lift.

Don't sweat it. My car got towed to the dealership and the truck damaged the oil filter housing. They started it and ALL of the oil ended up on their parking lot BEFORE they noticed. Zero damage.

Thank you PPlatinum (though I've gone to Ultra now.)

Speakin of balls, i got plenty of those. Today I started my day banging on some womans chest who decided it was time to die at the change of shift. After playing tag with a heartbeat for 30 minutes we declared her dead. Then I cared for every fucking one of her family members as they came to pay last respects, tissues, hugs, condolences and all. Then after making sure none of her organs were viable for donation, down to her corneas, I sat on the phone with the coroners office for 30 minutes explaining why we should not autopsy her. Then I waited 6 hours for a priest to bless her body before her family would allow me to care for her post mortem.

Then without any dinner, water or piss breaks for 8 hours I gleefully ended my day at 11pm buy pulling all the tubes and lines out from her body and making sure she didnt leak all over the bed. After I gave her a bath and made sure her arms froze in the "peaceful position" after 7 hours of rigor, I put her is a shiny white bag and dealt with all the politics of the passing of a human being.

After 30 minutes of unpaid overtime caring for a patient who could no longer than me for my tlc I rushed home to check my thread on cars shitting oil, compression checks and remarks on what a biased, stuck up, fuck I am. And then I get compliments on how my testicles finally descended from my abdominal cavity as they were supposed to around a few months after birth.
Now that I got that off my chest I can say goodnight and fuck you! Fuck you unskilled oil change monkeys, fuck you fuckers who work on your cars doing more than basic maintenance in your apartment carports because you cant find a less visible place to do it in. Fuck you people who didnt take the time to read thru this whole pile of whining shit. Thank you MSF for giving me a venue for good times and stress relief.

I feel better now..................

Dude a lot of us here don't change oil because we have to we do it because it is a simple process and we enjoy working on our cars. Gives you an opportunity to look everything over and examine the undercarriage for anything that may be amiss. I'd rather do that myself than let some minimum wage guy at the dealer or oil change place do it and possibly screw something up. If I end up saving $25 so much the better.

If you chose not to that is your choice. MSF is not a place for the faint of heart. People here will jump your shit just for fun. All said I still do pretty much all of my own maintenance since it is a different kind of stress from what I see at work. Your comments about image were misplaced and that is why people were all over you. You think Jay Leno needs to spend time working on cars? I know he has mechanics on his staff but I'm sure he's in there on a regular basis enjoying himself while he is at it.

Drive it to a car wash, the drain for the car wash is sunk in and will give you extra room. You were very lucky. No one cares more for your car than you do, don't let someone making $7.50 an hour near your car.

I have to say I feel for the guy. I live in an aprtment complex in Vegas with this same rule. Well my roommate didn't follow this rule and decided he was going to change his oil, which he did a couple times over a few months. Well no one told him to stop, but instead he recieved a bill at the end of the year for 'violiations,' which totaled 1500 just for a couple oil changes. I have to go to an oil place to get my oil changed too cause of this, but monitor them cloesly, although when my friends have an open driveway I do it myself. I do love working on my car dont get me wrong, but sometimes I just dont have the time or avaliable space to work on it.

Still dude, gotta have a little more thicker skin if your gunna be posting on forums. Welcome to the internet, it ruins livez yo.
