What Spark plug should i get with hypertech?

I have a Mazdaspeed CAI and I just ordered a hypertech last night. With just these minimal mods do I need to get a step colder spark plug? What are you hypertech cats running for plugs?

I just want to be safe

the ht hatred is strong in this thread. you're fine going one step colder.

he would be fine on the stock plugs, the ht doesn't raise boost all that much

Danno 06-21-2011 06:58 AM

Thanks Karl. I really wanted to stay with the stock plugs so i wouldnt foul them like so many other people seem to do. But maybe i will go a step colder for peace of mind...........Whats up with all the HT haters. Is there a particular reason why you dont like HT? It seems most people rocking HT really like it. Iv yet to see someone buy HT and then say it was horrible and wanted thier money back.

HT sucks fat cawk. move to the ap and you will understand why HT suck so bad

karl-hungus 06-21-2011 09:58 AM

sigh. i'm content with 282 / 326 on an ht tune. maybe someday i'll go bt and need an ap.

rule of thumb is one step colder plugs for every 50 extra hp.

i have to change my itv-22's next oil change as they will have 25k on them. no problems to report. i look forward to posting pics and having lenny read my plugs.

HT recommends stock heat range. Their mapping is based on that. If and only if and when OP adds high flow exhaust mods (catless dp/rp) would one step colder plugs possibly have any benenefit. At my mod level the need is marginal. See sig. I'd probably be fine on stock heat range. I went one step colder only because with the combo of mods I'm targetting 19 psi and still at 17 psi at 6,000 rpm under load. Colder plugs provide a little protection against detonation at this mod level.

General rule is that if the car is not showing any KR (pulling timing due to impending detonation) you do not need to go colder, and you want to run the hottest plugs you can without KR issues.
