Default Clutch kits

So while building my car I put an absolutely exhaustive amount of research into the clutch and I found a possible Timken release bearing replacement instead of the crappy stock one and a higher pressure pressure plate and a Tinken pilot bearing replacement and a source for clutch discs, would you guys be interested in some build-a-clutch kits that are cheaper than Act/CM/SB/et al?

It might save you guys some dough and include better parts etc.

Depending on price, I might be. My clutch is starting to slip in 4th and 5th, so it's only a matter of time.

cheaper then ACT?

IMO the ACT is the best kit out there money can buy cause the pedal pressure is near stock and it holds retarted amount of power.

you get a new clutch, FW, PP, TOB, PB all for 650ish shipped. if/when the items become worn out, they have a service that resurfaces your FW/PP and puts new pads on your disk for $150 shipped and you know it was done perfectly because its the damm mfg lol.

im all for new options so lets see what you can come up with marcus!!!!

The kit I am putting together should hold 600-700wtq for years, I think I also have a 900wtq option. Its pretty sweet stuff and it should hold up really nice.

I can duplicate the act kit with better parts for less, there is a fair amount of markup on even their stuff. Is that Act rebuild thing for all discs, fw, and pp? I bet its not but ill look into it. I bet shipping is extra too.

Mind If I ask how you found the timken bearings. What manufacture is the stock one from. I work for timkens only competitor in the states NTN-Bower. If I knew the exact specs of the bearing I might be able to get you comparable bearings for less. We do a lot of OEM stuff for american auto companies and mitshu. Alot of our business is with heavy equipment such as CAT John Deere. Dana axels. I don't know if we do any OEM stuff for Mazda.

The stock and the ACT TOBs suck. I bought a much better TOB for $45 from Stefan, but I'm afraid I don't know where he got it from.

so far i have only seen it done on the pucked style clutches and it DOES include shipping lol

why does everyone say the new ACT TOB's suck? i dont think anyone has had their "new revamped" clutches long enough to say anything was poorly designed. doubleflusher had his clutch fucked up when he took it out and they found a mfg defect and replaced everything for free!!!!

just be careful on how strong you increase the clamp load on the PP marcus because thats how the CM clutches failed. people couldent shift at WOT due to our sock hydraulic system not being able to support that much pressure.

I wish I could find the picture I took of the stock TOB, ACT TOB, and the one I got from Stefan. The ACT is identical to stock, and The one Stefan found was much beefier.

Actually, I can take another pic tonight since I have everything out anyways.

The rebuild service from ACT includes repucking the clutch disc and resurfacing both the FW and PP.

It's $150 plus shipping.

That deal can't be beat by anyone.

Like superskaterxes said, they found an issue with mine. One of the rivets on the clutch disc wasn't properly rolled, so they did all the work for free.99 and didn't charge me for shipping either. I felt like a winner on this day.

I did however, purchase a new pilot bearing and TOB from Edge. Might as well have all new stuff .

you have to scan them your ID. I think it was originally like $968 or something and we paid $581 with shipping.

$581 is a decent price, but that $968 is way over inflated.

Yeah I am going to be careful with pp pressures, i found stefans tob and used it to find the timken tob. Stefans tob is a interchange part so its a direct fit, the timken has the same dimensions but is not listed as a interchange. The timken is also metal and is supposed to have a better grease seal.

mine just started slipping as well in 4th gear. Stocker has 82K on it.

Anyone have thoughts to what clutch I should put back in? My car is mainly daily driven, goes on road trips and I usually go WOT a few times a day. It will probably never see the track either. I was leaning towards an ACT clutch but it has been so long since I've needed to install a clutch since all my other previous cars had 180+K on them and clutches were fine.

The ACT kits are fine, but I'd recommend a full-face clutch disc if you don't need the torque rating of the pucked kits. My 6-puck kit is pretty harsh for city traffic.

I also prefer the steel flywheels over the aluminum ones, though the removable face on the Fidanza flywheels are pretty sweet.

Did anyone try the SPEC self ratcheting clutch kits with the OEM flywheel? Are they good for anything?

I have. After bolting in an act street kit, and completely hating it, I then went to the spec self-ratcheting unit with my oem (cut) flywheel. Pedal feels exactly like oem, and engagement is perfect. I couldn't be happier now.

I am waiting for everything to come in, I have a couple discs, three throw out bearings, and two pressure plates on their way and I am thinking of getting another pp. I also need to go through the hydraulic system and find upgrade parts. I know that slave cyl has a huge interchange part number list.

i dont mind a little extra pressure, but i dont want to have to start a workout regimen to drive my car.

I need a clutch that can handle up to around 500 tq. I'm only going to need 350-400 right now, but hopefully in the future i'll be upgrading rods/pistons.

I've heard horror stories from the SPEC and clutchmaster clutches, heard good about ACT, but a story here and there about them being quite a pain to operate... now i heard that some company is coming out with some fantastic clutch.... but apparently they were supposed to release it weeks ago... still havent.

I really need a clutch SOON. just Friday, when I floored it in 5th, it slipped bad to 6k rpms before i released and let off the gas... just shitty.

anyways, i'm hoping to get some great information before my clutch starts slipping more frequently. For now, i'll have to lay off it.

Yeah I am looking to make a 500wtq kit and a balls out kit, but I think the 500ish wtq kit will cover most of the possible market.
p057 likes this.
