Just bought a speed6, and it now sounds awful Okay, let me preface this by saying I'm an idiot and I fully realize this. I drove to Tulsa, OK to pick up an '06 SPEED6 on Tuesday because it looked amazing and at $9000 (from a dealership, not an individual) it seemed like a great deal. I love this car and I'm glad I bought it. That said, I'm a moron. In the excitement of getting home I filled it with 87 gas not thinking about it (it had around 1/4 of a tank and I DON'T know what octane fuel that was) and got on my way. It made the 225mi trip home without a hitch. Realizing I needed gas when I got home, I went for some 91 (about as close to 93 as I'm going to find here) and filled the tank from about 1/4 again. 27 miles later, my check engine light came on. I haven't had a chance to run the code but I will after work. I goosed it a few times during this period, probably boosting in lower RPMs than I should have, but it's not like I went all-day drag racing with it. IMO the car didn't sound very good at idle when I popped the hood to check. If I can get the video to upload I'll link it. I noticed the motor was very hot. I had driven maybe 15-20 minutes, not that aggressively, and the car had sat probably 30-45 minutes by this point. This was after arriving at work this morning. The motor was cool to the touch. 20 minute drive, kept RPMs below 2500 the whole way and never cracked 50mph. The car seems to drive fine. It just sounds like crap (IMO) and the light is on. Guess I'll know more for sure this afternoon. |
Those are normal sounds from it being a Direct injection engine. You have nothing to worry about, my 2012 speed 3 sounds the same. We need the code numbers to help with the check engine light, but you may have a boost leak or incorrectly gapped spark plugs. |
I was hoping I was being a hypochondriac but with this being brand new to me I wasn't sure. I don't remember it sounding like that before but I must not have been paying close attention because it probably did. Here's hoping the check engine light is nothing. |

Sounds good to me, normal petrol/diesel combo. :-). Yes, pull the code. ¥1000 says small evap leak, aka loose gas cap. Use 91 or 93 gas, is ok. 87 and you will propably ping under heavy boost. |
Yeh. These direct injection motors have a lot of funky sounds to get used to. They are race cars....so get used to it ;) Pull them codes and lets see whats goin on! |
As far as I know this car is bone stock. 114k, one previous (reported) owner, good maintenance records kept. Granted I'm relying on CarFax/Autocheck for this information which we all know is a pile of shit. The dealership I bought from had purchased it at auction so they didn't have any information whatsoever on past history. Either they or the previous owner cut out all identifying data from included receipts and such. Will report back with the code as soon as I have it. Thanks guys. -Jordan |

Check to see if you have a cat, check your coolant levels and if they are good/coolant looks good, replace thermostat. Be happy. Also you can just ignore the catalyst code LOL. I'd just replace it with a pipe and have mawr powerz |

Did you find anything from the VIN? I've noticed that she seems a bit warm under the hood after a short drive at highway speeds, but she runs fine and temp on the dash never goes over halfway. Coolant levels look okay. It was in for routine maintenance about a thousand miles ago. Cleared the CEL and it hasn't come back yet. |
Car is gonna be warm its a top mounter intercooler so all that lovely heat is just sitting right on top of the engine. As long as your temp gauge is sitting in the middleish you are fine, or once you get an accesport you can monitor your air temps and boosted air temps. But like I said top mounted intercoolers will make it pretty warm, that is why everyone wants to get front mounted. Funny though, ever since I owned my car all the noise a DISI engine makes normally always throws me off even now. |
I'm used to a 5.0 mustang and that really doesn't get all that hot. My shitty little 4cyl Hyundai never got hot either, but it's trash so whatever. It makes sense that the speed6 would seem "hotter" than I'm used to due to the configuration. |
Sounds exactly like mine. With the same codes. Since I'm in an apartment I paid to have the thermostat changed. Expensive bill however, all my tools are up at the other house. 90K miles and just changed the thermostat. Invest in an AP and flash the map, you'll be pretty happy with the results. Just remember the speed 6 was early on and had issues with the fuel pump...most of them anyway. |
P0126 is stuck thermostat. Replace it. Trust me. Go VIP for autocheck report. |
Changing the thermostat is doable without removing the intake manifold. If I can, you can. I can induce the P0421 code by just putting around after a cold start - not getting over 2k rpm or so. There have been issues with getting the correct part, so a trip to the dealer is probably a good idea. |

Extra power is good, but I'm aiming for not blowing this bitch up in the next 3-5 years. Need some tint on the windows too... |

Im sitting at 275awhp with an htp 3'', testpipe, and a freek OTS+ on 93octane as my only "power mods" it is incredibly enjoyable and will be all I do for awhile while a save up for a forged gtx2867 set up. and you want to go VIP, the first thing you buy in the f/s will likely save you way more than 25 bucks |

Other than that, I love the styling of the speed6, both inside and out. As for "go", 300whp would be about the max I would ever hope for and even that isn't all that important. As an aside, I can't find 93 octane ANYWHERE in this godforsaken hellhole so I'm running 91. Best I can do. This is my daily driver so locating 93 and hoarding it away isn't particularly feasible. Fuck it. 91 it is. My asshole puckers every time I pay $4/gal for that shit as it is. I realize I won't get full potential out of my car with 91, but fuck it. |

Fuckem. I'm nearing 30. My Speed6 has two car seats in it. It's fast enough to elude laughs from both of my kids and I don't really feel it's "lacking" either. More power is always fun but necessary? Meh. I've got a couch these picklefuckers can start plowing. In short, to each their own. I think it's pretty stupid to hotrod your DD if you can't afford to blow it up and buy something else (hint: I can't) but that's just my opinion and I'm fucking old. I also speak from experience, having thrashed the transmission of my Mustang while being a fucking retard in college. I'd like to think I learned a lesson from that experience. |

Stock tune on the MS6 is dangerous. Especially after long highway driving. Also, ceramic tint doesn't need to be 35% to be effective. It's more effective @ 5% than non cermamic lifetime warrantied 35%. It will cost a few hundred more though... |

Thanks for the link bob. My fucking oil seal finally came in yesterday so here's the weekend: -replace shaft pivot seal -flush tranny fluid & refill with unicorn blood -replace thermostat -flush coolant and refill with FL22 -drive car off nearest ledge |
I was going to talk shit on you for being a prick but then realized you were a KSU fan and everything made sense. I have the BOSE pre-amp and it certainly adds a bit more bass. I'm actually throwing in a real sub setup so you could have my preamp when I'm done if you want. I can only find 91 as well but I supplement with meth and e85. e85 will do wonders to make up for the subpar 91 gas. Meth would too obviously but thats a bit hardcore for a stock car haha. I have the thermostat problem too... only throws a code on long drives in colder weather... need to replace it though. oh and welcome |
