Default RR tuner fail

ok, so not sure if a lot of you know, i was apart of RR's dyno tune day, and after putting out 280 whatever horsepower an 270 whatever tq i had my concerns of the car an something not being right.. since being fully bolted it should have been making more.

so i took it BACK to scott, RR's supposed tuner guy two weeks later, leave it for two days he says my compression is low in all 4 cyls an what not, whatever. he said he messed with my tune and made it safe to drive till i could do a build and said it wont see higher than 14 psi. i asked if the car will be safe to drive and he ASSURED me it is in NO danger of failure. SO $94 for that and a little pissed i wasted $450 on the initial tune i left.

as far as i know, after the tune i was not the only one with probs, bioevolve or whatever had probs also.

fast forward a month and my motor goes.

lets just say when i took my car back to stock i found something that made me think WTF?!

take a look at the photos and you can see what he did to (de-tune) my car.


i tried to defend RR and the tuner scott, i offered my car as they're test mule an shop car (since they no longer had one) and i was local. i no longer give a shit. im just pissed. i want my car fixed and im now looking for places local to try an start this rebuild.


for anyone local to tampa/clearwater area knows of some good shops PM me and let me know. its been easily 4months that my cars been parked. and i need to get this ball rolling.

I don't see how he could justify charging $94 for that, but its a very easy way to lower the boost...

It however did not make your car safe to drive with low compression in all four cylinders--Because nothing could...I don't care how good a tuner is, you can't fix a mechanical defect with tuning...

He should have been honest with you and told you to park the car until you could afford to fix it properly..

of course not, esp the couple of times i went WOT it was seeing 19psi+ cause the tune was never fucked with.

thats why after i picked the car up from him i didnt drive it at all, but it being my DD i had no choice at times. when it was driven it was driven beyond safely. and when the motor went it was shifting into 3rd and at about 55mph.

Sounds to me like they hurt the motor on the dyno. I've seen this happen before. The low compression is a SURE indicator of problems like scorched rings, bent rod(s) or valves. However, your description of what was reported to you is a bit lacking. Anyway, plugging the bleed hose from the WGA should have limited the boost to the WGA spring, but depending on exhaust mods that could be anywhere from ~9 to ~18 psi. The fact that the motor popped tends to suggest the rods were tweaked at the dyno session.

The line removed is the boost control line, not the boost reference line(the OEM actuator has two ports)... The WGA is still seeing boost pressure, but the BCS no longer has the ability to bleed pressure off to raise the boost past the WG spring pressure...

wow, thats some bullshit! im sorry for what happened. but that is 120% non-sense. i wanna say take them to court, but the cost of small claims court and the ability to prove he did that and convince the court is a 50/50 shot.

i hope things work out for you regardless, but if indeed thats what he did, FUCK THEM.

also.......SSInstallers post is 100% accurate..... shit you could take them to court for negligence in knowing your compression was low and telling you they changed the tune so its safe and nuthin would happen.


I see a lawsuit in the back of my head, but also weighing the cost of court and shit make me think also, but i do think you have a case.

its all not really worth it in my book, as far as the motor goes, im not 100% sure of the issues. it didn't blow. no fluids leaking or rod evacuation. theres def a clunking goin on which leads me to believe bent valves. i figured if it were a bent rod the car just wouldn't want to run, correct?

well, i have seen cars run with bent valves and/or rods......run like ABSOLUTE crap, and make obsene amount of noises, but they can run depending on how bad the damage is.

im guessing due to the low compression the rings gave out, and u may be hearing piston slap acutely. but you wont know till the motor is dissasembled to look into it.

if its just piston slap, or possibly a spun bearing, the motor may be able to be saved with new parts. but again, only a disassembly of the motor can tell u 100% what is wrong if its making crazy noises

haha i saw your thread earlier about your refund and ORIG posted this info in there but ended up making it a thread instead. luckily you didn't end up getting tuned by them, i talked to two local tuners afterwards about him and they pretty much both said the same.

he can fab some stuff but cant tune for shit. you can imagine how that made me feel.


honestly, the original thread RR's posted for an e-tune on this forum he said a totally different name of the guy who was going to be doing to e-tuning. i wish i could remember the name or the thread still existed. but it wasn't a scott.

Me and Brice are cool. He's given money back to me for the things that I had to purchase to get the kit complete for install. So everything there is cool, I completed the install, car runs great, all is well.

I was SUPPOSE to begin tuning with Scott, and this was of course before all of this shit with you and Bio hit the fan. He agreed to start me on a base map and said he'd have it to me in a few days. I was cool with that. A week and a half later he actually answered his phone and acted absolutely shocked and appalled that I was asking about the status of the map. From that point on, I knew he was going to be a wiener about it. All he had to do was send me the 10psi base map that he started the shop car on with modified ignition tables for the 91 octane out here rather than your 93 octane there. I probably called/emailed him over 20 times over the next few weeks and have not received a response. I gave up to say the least. I don't even care anymore.

I was SUPPOSE to begin tuning with Scott, and this was of course before all of this shit with you and Bio hit the fan. He agreed to start me on a base map and said he'd have it to me in a few days. I was cool with that. A week and a half later he actually answered his phone and acted absolutely shocked and appalled that I was asking about the status of the map. From that point on, I knew he was going to be a wiener about it. All he had to do was send me the 10psi base map that he started the shop car on with modified ignition tables for the 91 octane out here rather than your 93 octane there. I probably called/emailed him over 20 times over the next few weeks and have not received a response. I gave up to say the least. I don't even care anymore.


honestly i hold nothing of this against brice, brice was cool every time i talked to him. how he handles his business is his deal. but this guy scott just seems like the big problem. throughout the whole tunning session he seemed clueless what the car should be putting out power wise. a few times asking other guys about the timing and what not during tuning. he just didn't seem knowledgeable at all about the cars.

i had the same problems as you with him. multiple emails with no responses. initially told me 10k for a motor build and then called me swearing i misheard what he said. sorry i didn't. only because i put it out on here did he call or have anything to talk to me about.

i dont know if he took me for a moron and was thinking he could bend me over or what, which in a way he mostly has, but when it came to getting your kit HE HAD IT. showed me the kit talked to me about it and the day he was supposed to ship it to you he OBVIOUSLY never did seeing as how it took well over a month to get it to you from that day.

the shit looked on point quality wise but business wise. it sucked, im out well over 500bux with no car an possibly fucked motor and really cant do shit about it but bitch.
how this company is going to survive WITHOUT a shop car is beyond me. i dont think it will, not inside the mazda community anyhow.


hopefully you get your shit straightened out tunning wise. im looking forward to the progress on this an seein results.

Well Cobb should yank his pro-tuner status ASAP.

As far as what he did to your car, that is unbelievable.. Is the clunking you are hearing sound like a rod knock or is it up in the upper valve train? If its a knocking noise at the block, thats a spun rod bearing and will occur if there isnt a proper amount of oil in the car or by high reving it without letting it warm up on a dyno. If its upper valve train, this is an over rev condition.

It really makes me sad to see Brice and Scott Glassburn tearing through you guys the way they tore through the RX-8 forum.

That whole ordeal is a long and complicated story and it really bears repeating, but I'm not gonna do it here.

Its just amazing to me on several levels, not least of which being the relative closeness of these models and the community would be completely unobvious to someone who was simply following those two as they hopped from victim to victim.

I've had several discussions with Christian at Cobb about Glassburn and Brice - they are really not in a position to "take away" their license; they paid for it (with money they took in advance for e-Tuning, apparently). There isn't a whole lot of prequalifying that goes on to get the HASP as Cobb just lets the market sort itself out.

Having authored and edited a lot of the AccessTUNER guides over the past few years, I can tell you that there are, unfortunately, quite a few Authorized Cobb e-Tuners out there that actually don't have much real experience with the models in the market to which they sell.

Brice was always just a parts merchant, all the custom stuff has always been Mazsport Scott in the background. If you buy any "Race Roots" custom parts or kits, you are buying from Mazsport Scott.

any idea if scott still works at mazsport? i contacted them about building my motor haha seeing as they are fifteen minutes from me. looks like ill cancel that idea. its kind of becoming a real pain in the dick finding a place to try an get this build goin.

My "history" for your purposes is that I did you a favor and you turned around and started talking a whole buncha shit. I'm still waiting for you to sack-up and try that at a Pvas night or something similar.

In context of this thread, the only "history" that matters is that in the 600 e-Tune customers I've had over the last 3 years (nearly 4 dozen of them MS3), I've never resorted to sticking a bolt in someone's boost solenoid line as a "countermeasure" and I've not blown up a customer's car.
Of course, you are only as good as your next tune, but with a little luck, no one will have to deal with Scott again in that regard.

MazSport is out of business. Scott took off with $100k in customer parts (many of which Brice helped him pawn off on RX-8 owners) and cars and closed up shop.
