So the first failure point (mechanical) on the MZR is the rods, correct? I know of people, mostly in the DSM crowd, that have replaced rods and pistons through the bottom of the engine, without actually removing it from the car, is that possible on the Speed3?

Rods can be plopped in from the bottom, but i dont know about the pistons.

how do you insert a rod onto the wrist pin without the piston being removed from the engine?

i say replace all of it.

You have to remove the head.

Step 1.Remove oil pan
Step 2.Remove head
Step 3.Undo rod caps
Step 4.Pull piston and rod assembly out.

You cannot pull the rods out of the bottom of any engine that I know of, and I am 100% certain that you cannot reinstall a new set from the bottom of a engine on any engine ever made after 1940.

Problems:

#1 the wrist pin
#2 the piston cannot be removed
#3 the piston rings cannot be compressed and pushed into the cylinder from the bottom
#4 the crank is completely in the way
#5 if the crank isnt in the way you run a good chance of scratching the rod bearing surface on the crank which would require machining
#6 the main bearing girdle is in the way and would have to be removed, this would require a balance shaft delete
