PTP Pill question Hey, So i have yet to have a smoking turbo issue*knock on wood* - im at 55,xxx miles and recently changed from 5w-30 to 5w-40 as per suggestion. I am considering installing the PTP pill - but i first wanted to ask if there is any new info regarding whether or not this product actually does anything to prevent/fix the smoking turbo problem. Also, I am considering installing a TBE system - from what i can tell a lot of people who have performed this mod result in smoking turbo. I read and researched and now understand pretty well why this occurs. So i was hoping to hear from some people with 08's that have a TBE system and what their experiences were. Basically i am reluctant to install a TBE if the end result in most cases is a smoking turbo. So please let me know whats up. Thanks |
many ppl have a smoking turbu and just dont know it since they still have stock exhaust and cats |
I have no smoke, have never smoked. I put a DP+RP on and the PTP pill as preventative. I still use 5W30 and I have idled this car for nearly an hour in border lineups and no problems. Prevention is definitely the key here. Regular oil changes, synthetic oil, PtP, catch can, whatever. Don't let it start, if you can help it b/c stopping it once it's gotten going for a while is really hard. |
I've had my catted TBE on for a few hundred miles now.. no smoking so far and I'm running on 5W30 synthetic blend.. and no preventative action.. Don't follow my lead though.. Next oil change is 5W40 synthetic, catch can soon to come.. |
i have the PTP fix and that worked for a while, then it came back when I put a TP on. So i used the bnoon bolt and that cured it up. I just barely switched to 5w40, I should have tried that first but whatever. A catch can is a good idea as well not just for the smoking, but for the car over all. You may be one of the lucky ones anyway, at 55k miles and no smoke I would be extremely happy. Like darth vader said at this point prevention is your best bet. |
when i first bought my car i put on a test pipe, a couple months later it started smoking like a bitch at idle after like 2 minutes. First i tried a michio kaku catch can, it did not work, then I tried the ptp pill thingy, it didnt work, so i ordered me a bnoon bolt, that fixed the smoking. Then last winter i took out the bnoon bolt to see if it would still smoke, even after 15 minutes of idle it would not. I left the bolt out since then, last month in installed my downpipe, i was concerned that it might start to smoke again, but nothing yet. Kind of weird and random really. My advice, run your car hard and it will be fine. I am currently at 37000 miles on my 09. |
dont get over confident, tho... prevention is key. mine blew after about 3 months of smoking |
Mine was smoking with a CPE catted DP, but only under extreme circumstances---miles of bumper to bumper traffic in the summer heat. I undertook a multifaceted approach to cure my smoking turbo, and it seems to have worked. I switched to Shell Rotella T6 5W40 and "fabricated" my own valve cover-to-intake restriction out of a rubber bushing I had on hand. I can't say if it was the switch to 5w40 or the "restrictor" that fixed my smoking, but I'm nonetheless happy with the result. You will not regret the Downpipe/TBE. It's a healthy boost in power output and it makes a nice sound. |
