When I tackle this Ill post some pics of the 3 for reference.

It's easy as fuck when your shit doesn't break. And yes. Change the belt, and the idler.
Pb blaster on tensioner bolts. The holes are thru holes so the back of the bolts get corroded like mine.

check all of the grooves in your belt and pulleys for rocks, thats probably it.

also, when putting the belt back on, its easiest to route the belt around all of the pulleys except the crank first and then put it on the crank as you turn the tensioner bolt.

It is intermittent, and the tensioner was replaced by the previous owner so that could very well be; didn't start until they started sanding the roads.

Derek, you wouldn't happen to have the belt tensioner would you? Same dudes that tried to do your build said that I'd need a new belt, tensioner and actuator due to my belt making this winding sound and rattles at start up...is it necessary to do all 3 or just the tensioner would suffice?

aparantly any of the 3 can make a similar noise, test to see if the sound gets worse with ac on/off. in my case it was just the tensioner

Default Damned dealership rips you off!!

I have a 2008 MS3. Bought it new. I barely have 78k on it. This past Monday I was driving home and suddenly there was white smoke pouring from under the hood. I stopped as quickly as I could and raised the hood to make sure there was no fire. It was definitely electrical in smell. Towed to dealership who now, a week later , says it is the compressor and the first estimate was $820.00, then after a few hmms and be right backs it is now $1281.00. WHAT!!!!!!

I asked if they could just take the pulley off or reroute the belt or somehow, but they said no. So I have to either pay them this or I will not have a car. I hate them!!!! I am not overly mechanical with these newer computerized cars. I could rebuild the engine in my '72 Chevelle with no problem, but not this. They see a female and immediately think I know absolutely nothing.

If you are hearing terrible noises, you may be on your way to this as well. Mine was so intermittent which is why I did not take it in sooner. Only after the car reached temp, Only on the way home from work, never on the way there. OK if going at least 40 MPH. Weird!!!

That was not your belt tensioner. That was your AC compressor clutch bearing exploding. Quite a common occurance with these cars. Happened to me a few years ago. It got so hot that it melted the copper coil right out of the damn clutch. I wound up replacing the compressor myself for under $500. Took me about 4 hours. Good as new.

Weird!!!

To get the belt on, I left it off the crank pulley, and then used a zip tie to hold it on there while I cranked the engine manually. This stretched the belt a bit, but it seems to be necessary. I tried other methods like trying to slip it on the shiny pulleys without lips or grooves, but there was not enough slack. I watched all the videos I could, and no one showed exactly how to get it on the Mazdaspeed3.
