Default How-To: Injector & Intake Manifold Removal

Injector seal Write-up
Tools needed:
Pliers
3/8 Ratchet
3/8 extensions
3/8 swivel
Sockets: 8mm, 10mm, & 12mm
12mm Wrench (P/S bolt)
Pulley tensioner tool or 14mm (Belt)
Adjustable wrench (EGR Tube)
Injector socket / extractor (If corroded)
T40 Torx bit (Fuel Rail)

Here is the engine bay with the TMIC still on. I have an ETS TMIC, but I assume if you are willing to attempt to change the injectors or seals on your own you already know how to remove the TMIC.
There are 2 hose clamps and a few 10mm bolts.
There is also a vacuum line and intake hose that run to the back of the BOV that must be removed.

Remove the Vacuum Regulator thing that sit’s on top of the Manifold
(4) 8mm Bolts

Remove the 3 clips that are in the front left of the manifold by the power steering pump.
You will also need to remove the 2 bolts that attach the wiring harness to the manifold as well as the 1 bolt that holds the dip stick on to the manifold.

Power Steering Pump Removal:
(3) 12 mm bolts
(1) Ground
There are 2 options for moving the P/S pump.
1: You can loosen the serpentine belt via the tensioner pully. Get enough slack in the line and simply pull the belt off. Then loosen the bolts holding it to the block (See method 2 for location on those bolts). (This method is easier if you have the proper tools)
2: You can loosen the 2 bolts on top completely and the one on the bottom 4-5 full turns. You then need to pull the pump towards yourself, then towards the passanger side. This will give you enough room to get to the bolt holding the manifold on. (If you used this method you will need to hulk the P/S pump back on because there is literally no slack in the serpentine belt.
PS Before

PS After

Throttle Body:
(4) 8mm bolts
1 Wiring harness clip
There are 4 that hold the TB to the IM. It is pretty straight forward.
I removed the bolts and the clip and just moved it out of the way to avoid having to deal with spilling coolant.

To remove Intake Manifold:
(8) 10mm bolts
There are two vacuum hoses that you need to remove in front of the manifold & 1 more connected to the valve control module.
There is 1 wiring harness attached that needs to be valve control module that needs to be removed as well

To remove the one with the red clip, push down on the read clip and pull up on the vacuum hose.
To remove the one with the blue clip, pry the blue clip off and the vacuum hose will slip off.
There are 5 bolts that hold the manifold on that are easy to see. The far most bolt on the top is under the runner highlighted in red. There are 2 bolts that hold the manifold to the fuel rail bracket. There is one more bolt that is not visible that is to the left of the EGR tube.
You will also need to remove the EGR tube, I used an adjustable wrench.
You will have to reach under the manifold to reach the PCV hose and pull it off. It is on the far left side of the manifold, but you must reach from the right in order to get access to it.

Fuel Rail Bracket:
(2) 10mm bolts

Fuel Rail:
(5) 10mm bolts (Attached to Block)
(4) T40 Torx bolts
(2) 10mm bolts (Attached to Fuel Line)
The yellow dot indicate the vacuum hose to the fuel rail.
The green indicate the 2 10mm bolts that hold the fuel line to the rail.
The red dots indicate 5 10mm bolts that hold the rail to the block.
The blue dots indicate 4 Torx bolts that hold the crows feet to the block and hold the injectors in place.

Install in reverse order and whala… Your car should now be running like a champ.

BTW: Please feel free to comment with anything I may have missed. I will clean up the thread in a little bit. I threw this together quickly and didn't look over it too thoroughly.

Added to MS6 and MS3 How to database sticky

I'll be doing this on saturday so if there are any differences between the two (shouldn't be) I'll make a note about it in this thread.

They are now...

What I found is that some people pull the rail with the crows feet already removed so they don't have to risk trying to pull the injectors out of the head. Some people pull the rail before they pull the crows feet because their injectors will just pop out of the head after they remove the crows feet. There is no right or wrong way to remove it, just preference. However, I would strongly advise pulling the bolts from the fuel line and vacuum hose first in order to prevent bending the lines.

Yeah, my 08 has 80,000KM on it, of which most are highway. I'm thinking it might be time to get into the ports and clean the valves. From the pictures I've seen the carbon buildup can be pretty bad. I don't think DI with an EGR is the smartest combo.

My G8 has 45,000KM on it, again mostly highway. However, the intake valves look like the day they were installed in the head.

For the PS pump.... You can just undo the top bolts as shown (one comes out, one doesn't), and loosen the bottom bolt 4-5 full turns, but DO NOT REMOVE. Then lift the PS pump assembly up & towards the firewall iirc, so it clears the pin on the bottom. They it will just sag to the left, and be out of the way for the entire install/uninstall. This will save you some time.

Also, the bottom bolt on the power steering pump is a bitch to get at if you're not using the right tool combination. Use a deepwell socket with a 6" extention and a 3/8 ratchet to lossen this bolt. It's the only combo that fits that I know of... I had to find out the hard way, lol. Your ratchet should just clear the radiator.... go in from the top, and snake the deepwell on from there, and you'll have it in 2 minutes.

OP- Great write up!!

I just wiped down the throttle body with a clean rag, and I used 3-4 cans of brake cleaner on the intake mani. I have a w/m kit now + OCC, so I'm not worried about shit building back up. Here's what mine looked like before I cleaned it:

Many people reuse the stock gasket and say it's fine, but as you can see from the video, mine was shot and needed to be replaced (30K miles at the time). I'd buy one ($12) to have on hand or an intake mani spacer just in case. You don't want to create a leak there, and have to remove all that shit again for $12. If you do the spacer, only the 5 head bolts go back on.

I'm just starting my install here, and, I was already about ready to throw in the towel. I'm a pussy. SD's directions said to loosen the idler pulley, but, mine's a bitch or I'm a pussy as I can't move the fucking thing. So, I figured I would try this way. But it wasn't making sense to me...

The belt is presumably pretty tight. If you remove the pump, then it seems like you'd have to loosen and retighten the belt, which seems like a PIA. With your way, it seems like you just leave the belt tight and manhandle the pump. I guess that makes sense. I guess I'll go back out to the car and look at it again.

The belt is tight, and you do have to man handle the pump. Loosen that bottom bolt 4-5 full turns, but DO NOT REMOVE. I think my instructs above were off... you DO have to clear this pin (so pulling UP is correct), but I forget the direction. As soon as you clear the pin you'll know, because it'll want to hang to the left.

Don't give up, unless you think you're gonna break something. I'm FAR from mechanically inclined, so if I can pull it off, so can you . "I'm just starting my install" --> Get back in there and get er' done!! After doing it once, the next time will be a joke, and you'll have the satisfaction of not letting the install beat ya to boot

GL

EDIT:

7. Loosen bottom bolt of PS pump about 4-5 full turns DO NOT REMOVE. 7mm
No pic but it is on the left side almost up against the pully. I used a Deepwell socket with a 6" extention and a 3/8 ratchet to lossen this bolt.

8. While holding pulley with left hand and the housing with your right, pull the PS pump towards you and rotate counter clockwise until it just hangs to the left slightly. You must pull it out far enough to clear the "pin" on the bottom right side of the pump. If it isn't rotating you propbably haven't cleared the "pin". Either pull harder or loosen the bolt in step 7 a little more. DO NOT REMOVE THE BOLT ALL THE WAY. This step is necessary because you need to access the left most bolt on the IM head flange (when reversing this step its much easier to have an extra set of hands).

-Taken from MS6-582's 'how to' on 6crew.

Dougefresh_'s recommendations for the power steering pump worked great. Glad I gave up on loosing the idler pully per SD's instructions.

But, I've got something way way way fucked up, I'll post it in Silver Demon's original thread. (Hint: ever hear of a MISSING crow's foot?)

Edit*** I forgot the fuel rail holds the injector in also .. So my bad on thinking the injector would fly out ... Lol

Check SD's thread. I keep trying to think is there any way that I'm mistaken? Any way that I could have taken off the crows foot and not remembered having done so? But I couldn't even find my Torx bit so I was going to run to the store after removing the fuel rail.

I expect people to call bullshit. I would if it was someone else. But either it was missing, or I took serious drugs -- and I don't do drugs. Or someone ran into my garage and pulled it off while I wasn't looking.

I have seen one other member on this site that has had one of the torx bolts come completely out, but the crows foot stayed on the engine. So, I know it is possible....and this is why I recommended to use loctite on the torx bolts...

It seems that you have pretty well figured out how to put the power steering pump back on. For future referance, I have fixed/added to the original directions.

BTW: That is funny you are missing a crows foot.

I didn't think about that possibility -- that it was put on but fell off. If that is what happened, that makes Cobb not look like complete fucking idiots. I was thinking, "how could they have possibly missed putting one on?"

Two of the other three were on, but the bolts were loose. Do you think Cobb forgot to torque them, or did they vibrate loose?

I used high-temp loctite on the studs. But the nuts are actually going to be lubricated, the the ARP Ultra Torque. Would that make the nuts more likely to come off? It was my expectation that the torque loading is supposed to hold the nuts in place. I plan on torquing them to 25 lbs. They better stay.

The injector removal tool is simple but brilliant, I'm glad that was included. I had one injector that was terribly corroded. And it was the one that the bolt was tight! I'm going to have to clean that hole, I figure on using my Dremel tool with the cloth polishing wheel.

I hope after all this, its fixed for good. My car will be down for the week, I'll have to round up the crows foot this week.

I think that cobb probably put them on, they just did not torque them to spec and/or they did not use loctite. Just my guess though. The use of the ultra lube is a wise choice, and should be the best for this application. Use a torque wrench that is known calibrated properly and all should be right with the install.

I understand that Ultra Torque helps to set the torque loading. But, it seems like it would make it slippery too, which would seem to help it to back back out. But, maybe not, I dunno, it just kinda seems like it.

I wound up buying a stack of tools for this project. I didn't have a torque wrench. My brother has one, but is like 30 years old and I have no idea how close to spec it is, so I just bought one. A 21/64" drill bit, a 27 mm wrench, a 12 point 10 mm socket and a T40 socket.

I pulled the IM for my TIG install today. The how-to says you need to pull the pulley or belt off to do it. I did not have to.
Does pulling the pump/belt apply to 6 only, or 6/gen1 only?

Wish I would have tried it when I installed my seals, since getting that pump back in place is a real PIA by yourself.

This is a great write and I used it on my own car recently. But now that i got my PnP Mani back, and am getting it back on I have a questions.

When looking at the car the Mani has an area for something to plug into it on the left side. Looks like a plug about the size of a nickel and a area for a screw right next to it....

What the heck goes here! I I totally forgot.

Thanks!!

Hey Everyone - actually a new member here (member on 24/7). Anyways, long story short I have to replace an injector so this is super helpful how to. As far as actually pulling the injectors out is there anything else I need to know. When all the bolts are loosend up will they just pull out along with the fuel rail? If so any kind of special care regarding removing injectors from fuel rail? Or when reinstalling new injector?

I appreciate the help! Thanks!

Number one, absolutely, positively get the CPE injector seals at the same time. It will include the tool to remove the injectors. Some may just fall out easily, some may be really caked up and take some work to pull. But the removal tool works like a champ. Read this thread and the CPE injecotr seal thread.
