Default Modifying the heated seats

Ok, maybe I'm spoiled from my Audi days, but I had a 6-position roller switch to control the temperature of my heated seats. The MS6 heated seats are very strong and I am grateful to have them, but after about 20 minutes I start to sympathize with how a grilled panini feels. I want the heated seats on at that point but at a lower power setting.

So, my question: are there other Mazda (or other) OEM multiposition switches which would fit a MS6? I can rig something but it won't look clean.

It's just a matter of resistance. Someone get a switch and I'll do the rest. Even a three position (off, kinda on, full bake) switch would be fine, I just want it to look stock.

Alternatively, the existing switch can be the on/off, and a second switch (multiposition rotary switch, maybe 4-5 positions) can be installed next to it for thermal control. But, again, I'd really like it if we found a drop-in replacement switch.

How come my Canadian (Colder then a witches tit in a brass bra) MS3 didn't have the option of heated seats?

Someone just needs to find a switch which fits visually and physically, and has multiple positions; I simply haven't found one yet. I can do the rest once we have a candidate switch.

tough to find pictures and info including dimensions. seems like every manufacturer has their own, we just need the one that fits the best.

Actually that's a really good find when you consider the price of the switch by itself is $25:

Seat Heater for Cars and Trucks from HeatedSeatKits.com

The kit you linked to is a full-out heated seat kit complete with heaters; we just need the switch. I may just order up a switch to play with...

you sure? I am looking at the 5 position multi dial switch...

Seat Heater for Cars and Trucks from HeatedSeatKits.com

Also, I called a local scrapper. They had some Audis and VWs that have that type of dial. They would sell for ~ $40 for 2.

Edit: " If you were to buy a single switch from Volkswagen would cost you $100.00 each. We are selling you a complete kit for $160.00 only!" I stand corrected.

My 1998 Audi A4 had the switch you mention, and most every Audi from the mid-80's through the early 2000's should too. I'm curious how Audi wired them up: is the resistance built into the switch or controlled by other means? I unfortunately gave my service manual to the new owner.

And, for that matter, I have the same questions about the new switches from HeatedSeatKits.com.

If work didn't have me slammed I'd have more time to delve into all this. Sorry guys; it really is on my to-do list.

I too am interested in improving the function of the heated seats in the MS6. I did some research last night and came to the conclusion that it is a lot more complicated than we thought. The reason the seat is so bad is because of the control system it uses. When you flip the power switch, the seat gets full power causing it to warm up. When the thermostat gets to ~99F, it trips the circuit and shuts off the seat. Once the thermostat cools to ~87F, it turns the heating element back on. In order to have more control over the temp of the seat, a new thermostat would need to be installed that can actually record a temperature and send a signal to a control board that adjusted the amount of energy going to the element to get it to the desired temp. changing out the switch for one with multiple positions will just affect how long it takes for the thermostat to trip the circuit off.

So now we just need a circuit board...

I almost break into a sweat every morning. Have the heat set to 70-72 and the seats on and I think to myself, Damn I am hot! My Ford cars with heated seats just turn off all together after a while. Its more for just taking the chill out of the seat and let your ass keep the seat warm. SO I just turn mine off after it gets warm and turn it back on when I get out the car so when I go to warm it up in the AM its nice and toasty when I get in.

Why do we have to follow the same design? I'm fairly confident that the Audi's switch simply supplies variable voltage and the user's rump is the thermostat.

I hadn't thought of that... I was thinking you would need a new thermostat, but i suppose that one could simply use their rump. Not quite what i was looking for out of the seats but its probably better than how it is. you would just need to make sure that there is some sort of safety on it so you don't set the seat on fire if it gets left on and no one is in it.
