Check this shit out. Went to Atco last night cuz the weather was nice. Wanted to crack off a few runs, but instead I busted my left axle. When I say busted, I don't mean breaking the CV. This shit snapped on the shaft part, by the end of the inner boot.

I guess these Hoosiers can get pretty sticky. Burnout felt real good. Snapped it at the line. Didn't even trip the beams.

Anyone know where I can find axles cheap?

**Update. Got a stock '10 MS3 axle from a junkyard, off a wrecked one with 8000 miles (anyone here?). Also posted pics of the busted axle, off the car. The spline end parts of these axles look real thick, but the center shaft does not. This one broke on the inside end, with the splines still in the boot.

MS3inDC 03-16-2011 09:18 AM

Damn cousin...

At least your car isn't upset, it's still smiling

rfinkle2 03-16-2011 09:20 AM

Should I bother saying I'm glad it was only the axle?

phillyb 03-16-2011 09:21 AM

push that shit back in there!!!

Try these guys: Raxles, America's premier supplier of OE quality CV Axles and CV joints | Raxles.com

Alot of the VW/Audi guys use them when they start snapping axles and they have had good success. I have used them before and they are definately a great company to deal with.

9900rpm 03-16-2011 11:46 AM

I emailed some remanufacturing place, and they said they have different part numbers for the 2007/2008 MS3 axles and the 2010 MS3's. Does anyone here have a way to look it up to see if it's really a different part? I would think that it's the same shit, but I wanna make sure.

Found a spot that has the 2007/2008 ones for $45, with a $35 core charge, and free shipping if you buy $50+ worth of stuff. Trying to find a $5 part right now, otherwise shipping is $20.

@rfinkle2, yes! When the shit broke at the line, I was like FUCK!! Got out, looked under, saw no fluids on the ground and was happy. When I swapped the stock wheels back on and saw the busted axle, I was even happier. My cousin that owns my old red SRT4 ACR keeps breaking axles, and just last week he busted his input shaft. Had me worried for a second.

@Amazon, I'm working on it. If the axle would have held up, yesterday was potentially a really good night. The amount of grip the slicks had was off the chain!

Nice! Yours looks like the triipod/bearing went, and chewed itself out. Mine snapped the shaft. I guess that's the good thing about AWD for you... still make it home on 3 axles. I was assed the fuck out. Car wasn't moving anywhere.

BigJimMs3 03-16-2011 12:10 PM

Yea this is the first time ive heard about axles snapping on the ms3....anyways you could always use duct tape?

That looks like the entire assembly. There should be just a CV shaft option without that mount ("#3") in the picture.

Amazon 03-16-2011 01:24 PM

You must have been hooking hard son! I think you're the 1st ms3 to break an axle.

Trying to make your proud, lol.

Somebody help me out. Need to know if the 2007/2008 left axle is the same as 2010. Raxles only has a right one in stock. Another place has one for a 2008, and says there's a listing with different part number for 2010, which he doesn't have.

Monotonous ONE 03-16-2011 02:42 PM

damn dog

good luck with that

superskaterxes 03-16-2011 03:54 PM

for as often as u go to the track i would find a cheapo axle and get the driveshaft shop to make you a new one.

check here, ive had good luck with them

Thanks.

DSS's axles are somewhat pricey, but we'll see. I was drag racing this car all last year and axles held up fine. Maybe it just progressively weakened them. Raxles do have some available (only the right one at the moment), which I may also look into. They're a bit cheaper. I read somewhere on this, or another forum that the left axle shaft is actually skinnier than the right, and being that the tranny is on the left side, I'm thinking if anything, I will snap more left axles than rights.

Found 2 or 3 on car-part.com. Talking to the people now.

superskaterxes 03-16-2011 04:21 PM

people in the vdub world go through axles like its changing oil but its mostly because they are lowered and they start to bind. from what i remember the raxles werent the best replacement for longevity.

DingoDave 03-16-2011 07:08 PM

Man bro.. that sucks, but like someone else said... at least it was JUST an axle. I gotta ask though... were you recording video when the axle snapped?

PapaSmurf 03-16-2011 07:54 PM

Shit man, your slicks must have been super sticky! Haha that's some rough shit. I'm guessing all your motor mounts are upgraded?

MS3KO 03-16-2011 11:12 PM

LOL I deff saw you i was like Sweet another ms3! then the next thing my friend tells me you broke down i was like dam lol

Damn. I would call DSS, but I know it's gonna be like 8 bills for a pair, which I don't have.

Unfortunately I wasn't. All you would have seen was tire smoke from the burnout, me pull up to the line, the tree drop, then nothing. Afterwards you would hear some swearing, and that would be it. I didn't have time to run home that day to get my camera mount. Gonna just leave it in the car from now on. Will have vids on my next track outing.

I have the RMM and transmission mount upgraded. Waiting for the driver's side mount. Shit is harsh already. The transmission already sounded like shit with the ACT clutch/light flywheel (gear noise at idle) before the tranny mount. Now it sounds REAL bad. If you didn't know what it was, you'd swear that the transmission was broken.

Yeah, I did see a gen 1 MS3 there. I'm assuming that was you. If you would have came by with your car, I would have raped it for your left axle and made a few passes. j/k

Lex 03-17-2011 09:19 AM

Could you at least slowly drive the car? The LSD should allow you to at least move it around the lot.

MS3KO 03-17-2011 09:31 AM

Yeahh i didnt want to be that guy to come over and talk about cars while yours broke, but my friend broke his axle on his ms3 the same exact way just at Englishtown too much powaa

PapaSmurf 03-17-2011 11:16 AM

Which tranny mount do you have?

Minevra Motorwerkz. It's cheap, and does the job.

PapaSmurf 03-18-2011 06:20 PM

link to it?

nvm, decided not to be lazy and searched.

So you have an RMM and that tranny mount and no wheel hop?

if so which RMM you running?

I belive our Pu's have larger half shafts. Either way fucking sucks. I'm still betting on you to be the first 11 second genpu.

I don't get much wheel hop. Sometimes at the very end of the burnout it will bounce a few times, but nowhere near what it used to do. I run the Street Unit Aggressive RMM.

Larger half shafts than the gen 1's? Does anyone have a gen 1 left axle they can send me, just so I can compare with my busted one?

I hope to be the first 11 second genpu.

I actually found 2 of them. Both are pretty hurt. I may buy the axle from the other one as well. The left axle in these things look kinda wimpy (center shaft is thin).

bewsted 03-28-2011 10:29 PM

driveshaft shop ftw....wtb heavy duty axles LOL

IshiKage 04-04-2011 09:29 PM

rub some 'tussin on it

DubVms3 06-27-2011 04:12 PM

So how much is a spare axel?

NCZ13 06-27-2011 04:19 PM

Last time I checked for axles for my Gendone, it was a dealer item only.

And yes, OE axles are always going to be the most expensive route. That price is not that far off from how Hyundai prices their axles.

Wasn't really a spare, but a replacement. I found some place on the west coast, via car-part.com that had a rollover MS3 with 2000 miles. Not much was good on the car, but the left axle was. Paid like $120 shipped. The thing looked brand new. Wasn't even dirty. There was also one in upstate NY, but they wanted like $150 or so, shipped.

BTW, I was told that gen 1 and gen 2 have different part numbers on the axles. Gen 1 axles are all over (even though nobody snaps them).

NCZ13 06-27-2011 05:08 PM

Good to know. I think I checked sometime winter/spring of 2010.

DubVms3 06-27-2011 05:29 PM

Ok thank you guys
