Default Drag racing BS thread

The official 1/4 mile time threads were being overrun by BS posts, so I created this thread as a place to discuss anything drag racing.

Since this is the BS section, @Tenchix; and I got a ticket last night going "80" on a highway. No radar used. He tried to say we were racing, even though Nick was just following me... in the same lane... Bullshit end of the month ticket. I don't even think we were going 80, just cruising.

how do either of those posts have to do with drag racing? ^^ lol

We are talking drag strip, legal 1/4 mile racing.

On a side note someone buy me some Belak Industry wheels please.

Default Chasing 12s on 15.5K Factory tire Full Weight 2013 MS3

'Sup guys... saturday 1/25 I was able to cut a 1.958 and that's my best. Know its not 'the best' but on a factory 2050 with 15,600mi, 40lbs of N2 (approx 3-4/32 left) felt pretty good. Went back to full weight from 12/21/13 when the car went 12.988 @ -178lbs. Stock it went 13.715@100.49 -178lbs @ 1600 + DA with a ford oem rmm and some plug tuning. My last stock full weight time was a 13.85@99.1 @ 2200 + DA with said ford oem rmm and plug tuning. Feeling good about the direction so far with a month off, glad to see 13.085 wanting 12.80s. The track was a bit wet out of the 60' and got out of shape a bit, on me... prob wasn't in the right groove. With more time in the car, hopefully we will see better 12s with the weight in than out. Last time when the car went 12.988 it did it at 1107 DA and @ 1/25 it was 145 DA at the time of the run + 200lbs roughly. I simply wanted to 'shake down' the car. My oil change was at 4100+ miles. Next time out I will make more preparation and see if I can bring back some good news having driven better. The car is sporting a new 93 tune/mid pipe I made and had tig welded together for my 3" eco. These are the only changes since 12.988 @ 12/21/13

hey man, thank you very much. maybe this visual might help from my logs. I learned in reverse by feel to do this:

'boost with mph' look at green over blue. this is the 12.988 second pass @ 1.983. my RMM is an adjustable CFM uniit and I had 6 holes filled around back and 3 open. I did see a 1.96 on that setting on 12/21 but on 1/25 I was at 8/9 filled at 1.958. I can post the 1.958 once I figure out which log is which. for reference this car was making about 300whp @ sea level air at this time VD CF 1.09.

for those of you who use Drag Radials/slicks what kind of wheels do you have them mounted on, and what kind of tire did you use?

Has anyone compared running bias-ply tires to drag radials? I'm going with Hoosier QTPs next, and on my platform the bias-ply tires are more forgiving on the drivetrain and they are easier to hook up of the line with manual cars.

I'm going to be the goat of this thread because I am going to be trying a set of 255/40/18 Lexus IS250 rear 2050 Sp Sports on stock rims haha. They are about as wide as a 245/40 Direzza Z2... if they fit might be a nice cheap option. $55 per tire shaved down to 5/32 even wear :O overall diameter will be about 25.5 shaved halfway and I'm at about 24.8 now with my shaved Factory 225mm 2050s. NTM... another 13LBS per tire might help with the launch... I might bomb. Looking to get into the 1.8's in my 60' ;D

If you want a low 60' in FWD, you need to get away from street tires.

Slicks or bust.

Everything else is just a waste of time and money.

doubleflusher: I know its slow and I am on factory tires @ 1.958 right now @ 3570lbs race weight. I want 1.8s on factory tire and once I have gained full goat-status maybe consistent 1.8s with this crazy wide 2050 tire unless I bomb. and yes you are right, I'm just a nut that thinks I can do it another way haha I just know nothing of these things you call 'slicks' before I played with drag racing I was turning laps at sebring with my stock 2009 MS3 I'm the idiot that took $40 shaved er33 bridgestones from the used tire guy and took em 41 laps deep. yup I'm that guy... but def. wanna learn. the car has so much more in it its silly I'm just not picking it up properly. I am confident that with a better setup with the same whp I can get to 12.50s with time. when the time comes, maybe something more rediculous... needing race gas and slicks to do it.

I'm launching between 4000-4500 rpm, depending on conditions. 302 N/A on MT ET street DR's at 20 psi. No launch control, good old fashion clutch/gas pedal swap. Any lower and I bog, and higher and I spin. Not sure how this is going to help you though

Honestly, don't worry about reation times until you get better at launching your car. Trying to improve two things at once generally leads you to doing them both badly. When you do work on the RT you should be comming off the clutch when the third light comes on.

8% TP @ 3000-3200 and about .88-1.05 on the hit pull the clutch out and work in the gas, I get the foot to the floor around 5100 on a good run (stays there) and boost psi tuned to 1:1 with MPH till about 18.5, FFS at about 1.85-1.90 load. FFS limit @ 4777rpm. factory tire launch on n2@37.50psi. I pulled back my closed loop gate to .85 so I am in partial throttle fuel tuning for the hit. 1.958-1.999 currently. I think I'm trying a larger 2050 tire on saturday.

I have to drive almost an hour to the track, wait about a half hour to hour before I get to run.
if my car was trailered i'd probably let it idle 5-10 mins.

Hitting up the drag strip for the first time and was looking for any recommendations you might have - coilover stiffness front and rear, tire pressure etc. I'm picking up some nt05s today currently on v12s, hoping to run mid 13s

Just depends on how serious you wanna take it, if you wanna try and get the most out of the car, remove as much weight as possible, seats, spare/tools/sub, try to have about 1/4 tank of gas. My Nitto DR's seem to like around 15-16 psi, rear tires you wanna air up to 60psi.

With your mods, even at full weight, mid 13's should be easy as long as you're not blowing the tires off in 1st and 2nd.

Good luck

I run 255/40/17 NT05s. They're not gonna help off the line. They are for the road track and twisty roads.

Before you were on slicks would you feather the clutch off the line or just dump it at a lower rpm. With my current tire setup (v12s) and launching on the street I feather the hell out of the clutch so I don't spin. In your experience how much more grip will I see with a better street tires and launching at the track.

This is also coming from a bt speed!

I would launch at 4500, get a slight chirp if the tires sticking, and go wot. Track prep is going to dictate a lot in your launch. You could dial the power back in 1st and some in second to help. Tbh, if you want to get the most out of the car at the track, at the least get some Hoosier QTP's and let that shit rip!

*edit- if you're BT, I would think slicks should be the only option if you're wanting any kind of consistent short time.

Yeah but I still spun easily with the torque spike of the k04. preload the drivetrain a little (as opposed to just dumping the clutch) and short shift 1st and 2nd are my recommendations.

I'll see if I can do some practice runs tonight after I get the tires mounted, if I'm launching at 3k short shift at 5k first and second?

yes. I only say that because 1st and 2nd rip by so quickly, and sitting and bouncing off the limiter does nothing to help your time. Also because it will be mostly wheel spin anyway. Everyone is different though, takes a ton of practice. My only other suggestion would be to make sure you flat-foot shift into 3rd and 4th. If youre worried about the 2nd-3rd shift, just don't think about it too much. An open-palm shove up and to the right slightly will knock it right into 3rd gear. Shifting 4th-5th is sometimes not necessary, because you will be right at the line. Its a judgement call. I suggest trying both. The shift 4th-5th takes a chunk of time though.

If track prep is shit and youre on street tires, you'll be lucky to get under 14s. Hope that there are a lot of people there using slicks that night, it will help a lot.

Also might be worth asking Mike or Lex to make sure your 1st and 2nd gears are detuned heavily. Running 20psi in 1st and 2nd will hurt more than it will help.

I will give this a go tonight, not to worried about FFS. Lex did detune the car, I'm only seeing 14-15psi in 1st snd 15-16psi in 2nd and full boost in third. Thanks for the help.

I wish I could afford some radials or slicks for eecnm. It will be nt05's for me again. Hopefully I can cut down to a 2.1 with a little moderation on the right foot. I just want to get into the 12's on street tire and not fail so bad at tracshun. Last track day a year ago I was doing 2.3-2.4 60ft's which is worse when I was stock and all seasons.

About to purchase some wheels for slicks.

Found some 16x8 with a 4.5backspacing which is a 0 offset. Is that too much? I'm still on stock suspension. It'll be a huge poke I know.

Where are you guys finding slicks that are around 26-28x8-9x16. Only thing I can find is 28x10x16, which I'm assuming would work with the 4.5" backspacing.

You'll want a Hoosier qtp in a 26x9.5 16
