I found my problem with my shifting. I uninstalled my JB SSP and it feels so much better. I can FFS completely fine, and my shifts are smoother. I undoubtedly will get a 14.X run this Friday!

JB SSP has nothing to do with shifting imo. Mine's been perfectly fine for the past +10k miles.

In fact, I grinded and missed 2nd -> 3rd shifts a lot before I installed JBR SSP + aluminum bushing + RMM. After those, I rarely or never missed 3rd gear during WOT runs.

And I'm still on my stock transmission fluid.

Practice more on street. :2cents:

did you have your shifter properly adjusted after installed the jbr plate? if not that was probably your problem...also mt-90 and a heavy shift knob will clear up a lot of the notchiness it adds

I didn't bother reading all the posts. But you definitely want a degree of wheel slip. Traction control isn't launch control. It applies the brakes and bogs you down.
Just modulate the throttle better through first and half way through second and shift at 5500. Don't miss a gate either.

I respectfully disagree. My third gear grinds got 30 to 50 percent worse after the SSP install. There just isn't enough space in the gate for third it seems, and the SSP accentuates the problem. I still keep mine on because around town it feels so much better than stock, but when I do go to the track I will definitely be uninstalling the SSP. Also, this is regarding grinding third, not missing it altogether. My car will block out out third altogether if you shift into third after running second til 5k rpms. As always this is IMO and YMMV.

Yes, i had fine-tuned my shifter. I also have aluminum bushings and RMM, as well as synth tranny fluid. Like others have mentioned, the JBR SSP may not work the best for every gen2, including myself.

Exactly! Same experience with me, except instead of keeping the SSP, I decided to post it for sale. If I start missing the feeling of a shorter throw, I may give the SURE Shortcut a try.

why not go with an actual short shifter, instead of a shortshift plate?

if you have issues with one, you'll likely have issues with the other.

good point, but i don't think the shorter shift justifies the price of a full short shifter kit. I'll keep that money and save up for an AP and internals

I would turn all of the systems off, stage it and launch at 2.5k in first, short shift 2nd at 4500-5k, and then run it out to 5500 in 2nd, 5500 in 3rd, and run the track out in 4th.

Concentrate on being SMOOTH. Remember, SMOOTHER is faster (always). Don't try and drive it "fast", try and drive it smooth. Imagine you are driving this car to impress the most beautiful woman in the world and that she is holding a $1000 glass of champagne. If you get to the end of the track and you have been so smooth she hasn't spilled a drop, you can take her (and your win) home.

SMOOTH. On the gas, on the clutch, and on the shifter.

Can you elaborate on being SMOOTH? I feel like I'd have to slip the clutch more to make it smooth, and shift slower to be smooth. What is this smooth fast you are talking about?

It just means try and be fluid in your movements. You would rather be slower and smoother, than grind a gear, right? When the pressure is on, it's better to be very deliberate and precise with your movements than waste time trying to go fast and screw up.

This week, try launching from lights and minimizing wheel spin using your right foot and with the TCS and DSC off, get on the throttle and shift gears, focus on smoothly pushing the clutch in (not jamming it to the floor) letting the shifter go into the gate, rather than cramming it there. Roll off the clutch and onto the throttle, trying to get your transitions as smooth as possible (hint if you feel it you're dumping the clutch and not getting on the gas soon enough).

Smooth fast is basically when you are minimizing your movements and maximizing their efficiency. You can only really achieve this through a lot of practice, but you can practice it everyday while driving.

When the time comes, just work the pedals and levers with efficiency and don't focus on being fast or beating the other guy, focus on running the cleanest and best run you can. I can almost guarantee your bud will miss a shift or otherwise blow it and you'll win from driver mod alone.

Good luck dude!

-Rob

BUT i was practicing tonightttt!! I took off my JBR ssp, fine tuned my shifter, and now it shifts like a dream. I never could FFS until now, and it pretty much spun through almost all of 2nd (maybe loss of traction not so good). I was watching @DingoDave 's drag videos on Youtube and he doesn't FFS.. not sure which is better at the drag strip

Believe it or not.. I do FFS (or try to lol). Although 90% of those videos were before the FFS/LC addition to the AP. I currently have my LC set to 3000, and FFS set to 5500 on Stage 1 93 oct OTS tune (This is on Hankook tires. Stock dunlops prob need 2500 LC). IMHO, FFS every gear if you can. Just practice getting the left foot and right hand synced up. Good luck.

LOL ill be thinking about this next time i goto the track!

If you're dead even with a 3.8 genesis at stock from a roll, wouldn't you lose from a dig?

And the track was closed this Friday because of the hurricane , so we will have to do it probably next Friday.

P.S. I'm getting a COBB Accessport this week so I'll be running a Stage 1 map for the race!

Make sure you get a proper MAF cal in before you go thrash it on the drag strip.

Ok, since I'm a total noob to the AP, what do u mean by that? You're saying I have to make sure that I have the right OTS MAP? or do I actually have to calibrate the MAF sensor?

Flash the OTS map that is most appropiate for your mods. Drive fifty miles. Then follow Chapter 4 in Abilors Tooning guide. You MAF will now be calibrated. Once your MAF is calibrated you can move on to getting fast by leaning out your fuel tables, tweaking boost and then timing. Calibrating the MAF, fuel tables and boost aren't that hard if you follow Abilors Guide. You'd probably want to get help with the timing though.

HOW TO CALIBRATE YOUR MAF! With An Example has a great description of exactly what you need to do.

is this still going down? BTW i flat foot 3-4 and 4-5. I launch with DSC off around 2900 and go about 1/2 - 3/4 throttle through third. I ran 13.8 for a best. Most runs were low 14s though

Yep it's still going down, just waiting for a good day that fits both our schedules. I'll definitely update when it happens. Thanks for the advice, I'll experiment with FFS. Just got an AP and could tune it to FFS and use LC, but prob won't have time to do so before the race.

Your still a faggot that doesn't have a clue what the fuck it's talking about, even in this thread.
We're talking about a Hyundai. Not an S2000, which even with vtec and 9000 rpm redline, even that other faggot who runs 15's and starts in second gear and thinks the ms3 is better suited to rally racing could smoke.
