so today a bunch of us went to California Speedway in Fontana for some attempts at drag racing.

I personally was all excited because power wise my car has never ran better, makes power to sometimes spin 3rd a lil on the street, car pulls great ...couldnt be happier with the performance of the motor.

So like an idiot I take my helmet to the track (as if I was gonna fucken need it..yeah right) first pass (new improved map + exhaust manifold) I launch the car how i always have launched it ...hold 2250 rpm...... slip the clutch a lil and roll into the throttle etc etc.

well, that fucken blew it....first spun horribly....I let off the gas a lil (rather than add a lil clutch) the car bogs a lil , lean into the gas again into 2nd goes completely up in smoke , dont powershift into 3rd (because i was afraid of the tirespin) and floor it when into 3rd and the car starts spinning and shifting sideways..... I'm like wtf...my car never does this...oh well.....ran a horrible 2.45 60ft and some pos 14.3 @ 103 mph or something.

ok, i say...first time on this setup and the track is tricky ...next run i got it.

2nd run i totally pussy foot first gear and almost idle my way off of first without bogging , get into second and spins completely into third.....at that point I am already thinking "fuck me so hard".....run a 14.1 @104 or around there...... next run ...yeah that will be the pass of my life.

it was suggested to me to launch with TC on ....but im old school and i really hate bullshit electronics....so I say fuck it....im just gonna let the car spin through w/e gears it feels like spinning and we ll see what happens....

launch the car ...1st spins......2nd spins...3rd idk...im so pissed that i dont even know what the fuck is going on.......get the slip and its like a 14.2 @106mph........ oh yeah...2.6 60ft..... im like fuck this car to all hell man.

my goal today was to run a 13.5 @108mph....... my best pass before was 13.71 @104.5 mph with a 2.20 60ft....and the car now has to pull at least another 20-25 hp easily so I thought the stars would line up......apparently my ass eclipsed them and i got pwned once again at this track.

I never floored the gas until 3rd gear on any run and the runs I did ended up even slower.....so I didn't even improve on my mph before since I didn't start fully boosting until around the 330ft mark....by then...wtf am i gonna do?

so now I got a decision to make.....get some fucken drag radials and see how that goes or just be content that the car is pretty quick on the street where it does hook up a lil better than at this track.....

Josh (sgtP) ran back to back 13.5s @ 105mph with coilovers and nittos..... so in that regard my hat is off to him..... hes got the fastest passes at Fontana now....his car hooks and slingshots.

peruspeed cracked a 12.9 @ 106mph (broke his 12 sec cherry) in his evo X, so good job to him as well.

I'm kind of annoyed with this now...... I didnt even come close to what i ran last time with less power...... oh well.... I gotta find out what all my front end noise is (axle click, traction bar creeks, and some really bad clunking that I will inspect if its motor mount related) after I find out wtf I am gonna look into some drag radials see if I can cut at least consistent 2.1s to have a fucken chnace of reaching my cars potential.

+1 to tires making a huge difference. Tires were the first thing I got because I knew no matter how powerful I got the car to be I needed something to be able to put that power down to the pavement efficiently and successfully. What tires are you running right now?

Sorry I didn't make it today. I sold a car last night that I had to deliver today and I sold a car today so as weird as it sounds, making money is a little more important to me than racing. Its only a little more important though because more money = more racing and better racing. I will definitely try to come out next time.

i have zero suspension mods, i run stock potenzas at 30psi up front...... I have been able to cut 2.2 60ft times on many occasions at this track.....but I am honestly perplexed with how the car behaves at lower speeds now......seems that I have 2 choices and 2 choices only.....roll slowly through gears 1-2 and go 75% into 3rd and floor it at the top of 3rd and basically lose all that hp until the 330ft mark....or....spin the shit out of the tires...stand still and watch my timeslip fly away.

idk.....maybe It's been so long since I had to deal with any real tirespin beyond 1st gear that I am cockblocking myself..... idk it was simply a horrible performance

Me getting my 100 mph trap speed on a near stock MS3 was worth the trip for me!!

As far as I'm concerned, I didn't fail at all. 14.3 @ 100

Lenny, It isn't you or your car that's failing. It's your tires bro. If you were able to get traction you'd run a low 13. I know it man. Get some sticky rubber and everything will change. We might as well be running concrete tires with these fucking potenzas.

Congrats to Josh for making some good first runs. I told you, you wouldn't miss third bro! Good job.

It was great chillin with everyone. I hope to keep seeing more and more forum members there.

im scared to go to the track for two reasons:

1) im scared to fry my clutch
2) im even more scared of the disappointment and shame i can place upon myself after putting this much money into the car and running shitty times.

Jesus man, get you some tires. Personally I felt the stock tires were shit, especially after some miles on them. Out of curiosity, how many miles were on the tires the times before (with less power) and how many are on them now?

your running stock tires and your wondering why your car fully bolted has traction issues? get some wider stickier street tires, i have 235/40 direzza z1 star specs and i love em, there a little wide for the stock rims but i love em

lenny find me a low miles cali mark2 mr2 black on black (could be a non turbo wont cost more than 9k if so) ship it here and ill give you my speed6 with motor mounts and strut bars, and you can put all your mods on it and make 12s. plus you'll still have your 3.

here are some of my shitbag runs (thanks to Julio always providing footage) and let me borrow the smallest camera I have ever seen to stick in between my headrest and seat


first pass....full of spin and fail


same pass outside view.....on this one i fried first, let off ..slowed down..fried second...idk wtf i was doing


on this one i was so fucken scared to spin and not move again that i over did it in the other direction and pussied the launch.....i limped out the whole and well..... the run was over by then



on this last pass i pussy out of the hole again so i lose time and i still cant get the right clutch/gas combo and 1st and 2nd spin like shit..... so... I guess i'll humble myself and admit that i cannot drive decent at this track with my present engine tire combo.

i really wanted to make this work with stock tires (after all this is a fucken put putter..not a race car...oh well.... i am considering getting either drag radials...or.... advan neova's ad08's on 225 /45/ 18 see if the increase in width/sidewall along with a slightly stickier compound is enough without having to resort to drag radials

in the end we get together to have fun...and it was fun.. i love drag racing. this track is both a piece of shit in how it performs and how they run it..... all we got was 3 passes each from 6am til 5pm...about 400-500 cars there.

dec 5th is next...hopefully by then i can have a lil better traction and not come out all depressed at the end of the day.....then again....fontana pwns u no matter what.

All the flow mods mean lots of torque that causes wheel spin but the turbo chokes at the top end. It's tough to get it right but a larger turbo will carry you over 110mph easily with the same flow mods.

Nice videos! Sux about the traction issues. It looks like it was hot out too? I can't believe the Evo X only runs 12.9 @ 107 with all those mods, no wing, and tuning- that isn't very good. I think the Evo IX MR is supposed to run like 12.9 stock.

Road & Track got 13.2@ 103.6 with a stock EVO X MR Touring; wont take much to get into 12's. This may very well be may next car mainly for the handling / awd though. I'd be pretty content if I could get it 12.8-12.9@106-107mph out of it.


At first I thought sgtP ran 13.5's w/ just coil over / tire, I was WTF?? But cool vids and nice runs! I'm planning to be at the track this coming wed, goal is 13.5-13.7 as it sits - intake/test pipe/mm

I watched Lenny's first run and he was all over the place, but so was everyone else...especially the first group of the day. Group 1 folks got the track's early bird track prep special....no prep!

Without a good set of tires Lenny, you'll continue to baby 1st & 2nd. I'm seriously considering some cheapo 16" stang wheels with some cheater slicks! lol

I was pretty sure Evo IX MR was mid 13's stock, and yeah modded IX's were running 14s so..12.9 on that track is actually much faster than it sounds...

I leave all the traction controls on. 13.685 @ 106.6 with a 2.3 60 ft two weeks ago.

Spun 1st badly but 2nd grabbed.

why is it pure retard?? it's more difficult sure.... but not any less fun. I don't race against anyone but myself.... I see the progress from my stock ms3 to what I have now..that to me is enjoyable since I apply it daily to cars that come up against me on the street or fwy.

would I rather have one of my old hot rods to tinker and take to the strip instead of the ms3?? yes 100%. but this is all i have so I make the best of a difficult situation.

Well if you think about it dragging any DD is retarded; with the MS3 it’s just more of a challenge. I don’t think the MS3 is any less reliable out on the strip than most other cars as long as you’re doing things correctly (i.e., not dropping the clutch @5k). There was even an article that stated something to the effect that the Mazda engineers said the car won’t break even with dropping the clutch/ flat shifting, etc.

So far this has proven to be true for myself and many other MS3 owners. And besides, I’m sure most people like myself test the car before hand to be fairly confident that it’s not going to break doing ¼ mile runs. And yeah like Lenny stated; its not that we think we have a chance competing against RWD/AWD it’s just fun and more about setting and beating personal goals. It's all relative.

well i went to 1/8 mile when clutch was good and run a 8.01 at 85mph and my best 1/8 of a mile in the 1/4 mile was 8.4 haha so im guessing if i run with a good clutch i shuld be getting 12.6 :)

awesome videos lenny. the pg mani was the last thing ive done and i completely agree, its fucking awesome powerwise, had only I got one earlier. get some good tires on the front wheels and go back, its just a let down to have any sort of expectations of good 60' or 1/8 times in a car you have to baby the throttle until 50-60mph
