Default oil consumption

Okay so after lots of searching and lots of attempts to solve this, i am still eating a quart every 400 miles or so. So far i have replaced my turbo with a bnr s4 v2 and replaced the god damn pcv valve (both of which helped slightly). Im trying to find a compression/leakdown tester and will post results when im able. Im thinking its a valve seal as it only visibly burns oil for a second on startup and on decel. There is no oil buildup on the spark plugs and all four look identical. The constant smoking stopped after the pcv and turbo were replaced. I attached a short video of a cold start. I appreciate any input!

Went big turbo without doing comp test first? That seems risky but hey....racecar. How many miles on the motor?

Man, you've got so much valve train noise, it sounds like a circular saw

Didn't look like a quart every 400 miles. Do you see it out back when you go WOT?

Valvetrain is silent. I hardly ever see smoke. Doing compression and leakdown today.

Valvetrain is pretty much silent, There was a weed whacker running in the background. I hardly ever see smoke, only sometimes on decel.

Compression results are 185 185 185 185. Perfectly even across the board. Still trying to find a leakdown tester

I assume you have looked all over the engine bay for a leak? Valve cover, timing cover, oil pan, turbo..... doesn't really look to me like you are burning that much

I guess my joke was too subtle, about the valve train noise. The weed wacker sounded like a circular saw :-)

maybe you should check your pcv system. valve could be stuck open and blowing oil

EDIT- just reread your post and must of overlooked the pcv part. disregard this.....

I have heard of a similar issue and it ended up being that the oil control rings were getting all gummed up on high mileage motors.

IIRC, it was along the lines of motors after 115 to 125k and up.

I'm having the exact same issue. I went from 133,703 miles (fresh oil change, full on the dipstick) to yesterday at 136,170 and the dipstick is right on the low oil marker. This was after changing my PCV valve as a hail mary fix.

Looking for any ideas as well.

Standard troubleshooting:

1. Remove intake, IC and plugs; inspect for oil, including piston heads.
2. Idle car for 3 minutes; inspect for smoke.
3. Remove PCV hose at IM; inspect for one way flow.
4. Perform compression/leadkdown.

- Smoke at idle = turbo
- Smoke at cold startup and/or while deaccelerating = valve seals
- Oil in intake = turbo or plugged PCV
- Oil on piston heads and/or plugs = Plugged PCV, rings or ringlands
- Low compression/high leakdown = compression rings/ringlands
- Smoke out exhaust after switching from cruise to WOT = oil control rings or ringlands

Stock cats hide a lot of the smoke issues while driving. GL.

Well, I finally got the engine apart. I was losing a quart of oil and less than 200 miles. Change the turbo because I was getting oil out the cold side and into the intake. Has good compression in all cylinders. Here is the verdict from what I can see. Oil control ring and all four pistons are clogged. everything else looks good. Check out the pictures and tell me what you think. I right at 123k miles got the car with 116K.

I can't tell from the photos but did you have gunk/carb deposits come off the bottom rings when you inspected them? Any blockages in the oil passages?

Certainly seems like they're passing oil from the bottom up...

Yes, the bottom rings are gunked up with carbon. There are tiny holes in the rings but blocked by carbon. See picture with one of them unblocked

Our former local So Cal builder Jordan Keifover had a box full of gunked up piston rings. Not completely blocked, but getting there.

I don't think the community realizes how big of an issue this really is. I think a lot if this is masked by failed motors as the symptoms are completely hidden, aside from rapid oil consumption.

Here is what the underside of my head looks like. The intake is gunk up with oil deposit. I'm guessing this is from my old turbo that was passing oil. The exhaust looks normal. I'm right at 123,000 miles. Off to the machine shop for cleaning. sorry for the bad photos
