"Pro" is a marketing term meant for a upper scale laptop. They put "Pro" on Macbooks because a while ago they sold White Polycarbonate laptops. Which did not have the specs of the Macbook Pros. The poly-carbonite ones were geared toward college kids and had significant price reductions. Then in 2008 Apple came out with the new Metal Macbook Pro design and phased out the polycarbonate macbooks. Then Apple did a reverse course and refreshed Macbook Pro line out of metal/better parts and returned with the polycarbonate macbook.

The reason they call it Macbook Pro is because it usually has higher upgraded components than the original polycarbonate macbook.

Secondly, if you're basing a processor based on the number of cores it has you're an idiot. Theres 20x more that goes into what defines a processor and how efficiently a processor works. Their processors are more than adequate for what the average people and even developers use.

I run a 2.8GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo (2008 MBP). On any given day I have 7 Internet windows open, 2 Expresso TextEditor Windows Open, Fireworks CS6, Photoshop CS6, Spotify, Email, xCode 4.5, iPhone Simulator, and on some days even parallels or eclipse. I rarely if ever experience a lag anywhere in the system and I multi-task very much. I have my environments split between different workspaces. xCode/Iphone Sim in one, Fireworks/Photoshop in another, and everything else in the 1st workspace. Two fingers on my magic mouse switches between them. Which I do regularly.

So if you're trying to argue that the processor sucks or is underpowered its not. If you're trying to argue you want more bang for you buck, then thats fine for you.

Secondly have you done any analysis on the Macbook sales at all? Apple makes 30% profit off every macbook sold, based on the HARDWARE ONLY. That does not include any of the OS X Development/Support costs. It does not include licensing costs or whatever costs go into the Mac App Store, iTunes Store, and iOS App Store. Granted most of those costs are subsidized by the 30% profit Apple takes to sell on the store, but theres more to the story.

That 30% also doesn't include R&D. Apple is thorough in their R&D. The indicator in the Macbook Pro's for Sleep is laser cut into the metal chassis using a revolutionary technology they bought.

Furthermore, that 30% is decreasing every year. As Apple sells more macbook pro's that 30% decreases and so does the cost of a Macbook. But I don't expect you to believe me.

No, what the graph showed was a DECREASE in % of profit, a DECREASE in COST, and an INCREASE in marketshare. Which doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why Macs cost so much, and shows that as time goes on and marketshare rises the cost of the Macbook will go down for us while profit margins stay the same. Assuming it goes according to historical contexts. Which means that Apple has determined an internal profit percentage that goes down as they sell more machines. Which means your 28%-30& Figure is bunk.

I'm really glad you understand processors from building your own computer. But please, tell me why Window's WPF Platform is more Processor Intensive than Apple's Cocoa?

The point i'm trying to make is that one of two processors may process 1+1 faster than the other. But when it comes to computers its not 1+1. Its a shit-load more complex and complicated than that. If you take time to understand computers you will find that almost all Apple Projects are written in Obj-C and compiled into native code. Windows .Net and Windows 8 Applications are not. They are interpreted applications and then are transmitted on the fly into native code. Which at best is a decent performance reduction over native code last I checked.

Not to mention the internals of a processor, motherboard, and memory.

My 2year old Macbook Pro runs twice as fast as my moms new Windows laptop and the windows laptop has a faster processor and more RAM. Not to mention Apple replaced my first macbook for free with a new Macbook pro after I physically damaged my own product on accident.

Some people may hate their high prices but their service is outstanding IMHO

Jeez idk where to start man lol. Drops calls constantly (and I know its not my provider because its only been happening on this model). It freezes up on me ALL THE TIME, literally at least 5 times a day.. The internet absolutely sucks and I know its not my connection because my girlfiend who has an iphone will be sitting right next to me and load whatever im trying to load in like 10 seconds, itll take my phone a good 3-4 minutes to load a facebook page or google sometimes. ANDDD it likes to just randomly shut off and not turn back on for 20-30 minutes every now and then. I've had samsung phones before.. Im not saying dont go the samsung route, but DEFINITELY DO NOT go the G2X route. My mom and sister both have them too and suffer from the same problems.

The whole thing about apple laptops running faster than windows pcs is true to an extent.

I have a laptop thay was running windows xp and it was extremely slow.

I installed Ubuntu (linux) on it and it ran a lot faster.

I am by no means a computer guru but all i know is that windows is a very slow OS and linux is much better

If you install and uninstall a shitload of software on your laptop, your registry will become fragmented. This is what causes the slow down in most cases. If people learn how to keep their registry clean, then there is no issues.

Apple made the decision to go with a bsd operating system in 1999. There's very little fragmentation with *nix systems. Windows was supposed to break out of registry 3 versions ago but people complained about breaking compatibility.

Windows 7 is prob the best OS to come out from MS. It handles memory very well and has little file fragmentation.

Owning a Mac doesn't make you a power user however.. Its designed to just work and is limited to what a user can modify for his work environment. I don't like such restrictions and i prefer to allocate memory to what im using. Ill give Mac some kudos for bringing bsd to the mainstream, but in the same breath, ill ridicule the shit out of them for their bullshit restrictions they place on taking over its memory handling and installation of apps.. Esp with Mountain Lion.

They are making profit, but not as much as you'd think. You think the 40$ you pay to buy OS X Upgrade pays the salaries of all those engineers, developers, and designers? Let alone the fact that OS X is included in the price of the mac you buy.

Secondly, no they're not. But the software is more optimized and more stable. You can't sit there with a straight face and tell me .net is as fast as native code. You just can't.

Heres one benchmark.. Head-to-head benchmark: C++ vs .NET - CodeProject

On the double tests and such theres a .10 difference at its closest, but on the sudoku example which is a more real-world test.. Furthermore .Net was found slower than native C++ in most of the tests. In the end of the article they even state that .Net was made to perform as well as possible and most programmers wont take that time.

Base-line Macbook Pros, Processor to Processor 1+1, Probably not. But as you climb in the tiers and spend more you get more. Todays top Macbook Pro's are just as fast as the baseline MacPro; and faster than the 2008 MacPro. So, 2200$ Macbook Pro Retina > 2500$ Mac Pro. But yes, once your start getting up there, once you start spending 3-4 grand on a MacPro you're going to get much better performance.

As for video rendering, my 2008 Macbook Pro rendered raw 720P in less than 4 minutes. While I was working on other things. It can render video, and it can do it as well as anything in its class. But if your looking at rendering bluray from a red camera.. Well then you're gonna need a lot more power. But the point is, your comment that they "Choke" is bullshit.

Lastly, iOS isn't coming to OS X. If you knew ANYTHING about Apple you would know this. Apple is ADAMANTLY against putting iOS on OS X.

Agreed the Windows Registry is a PITA. People get viruses that fuck with it and never fix them after they remove the virus. They have all those startup programs, and tens more shit. Most people who say windows runs like shit simply don't know how to fix it and maintain it.

Windows 7 is easily the best OS to come from MS. But on a benchmark stand point Windows 8 is faster at the core.

Mac Isn't locked down as much as you think it is. It's an egg. On the outside it runs picture perfect.. but deep inside its still unix/bsd and you can still break into all the details. Installation of Apps isn't controlled by the App Store, its a setting just like UAC is. Pretty much the same thing as UAC really. Power Users will just turn it right off.

If you want to blame someone for the crap performance of a lot of Windows machines, blame the OEM's who load laptops up with garbage software, or the user who somehow finds a way to infect it with malware. Any OS can be taken to its knees by crap software and users, including OSX.

Or ya know.. like the whole operating system.. and applications being interpreted now as opposed to native code. That could be a big deal too....

People fuck up their computers, thats no lie. But just look at my posts and you'll see how much better native code runs. The amount of interpreted code in windows now.. well they might aswell sell out to VMWare because its almost a virtual machine.

Alienware laptops are the shit. I love me some MXM. Apple's Older iMac's had MXM too, I dont know about the new ones. I wish Apple and HP would go to MXM in their laptops too. MXM is pure dank.
