REPORT: Former racer Ricardo Londoño murdered in Colombia

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....07/londono.jpgNews reports from Colombia indicate that former racing driver Ricardo "Cichilla" Londoño has been gunned down outside his hotel in San Bernardo del Viento in an apparent drug-related killing this past Saturday.

Londoño is perhaps best known for being Colombia's first official Formula One driver. Starting out on the local scene in 1979, Londono advanced through IMSA, Can Am and Daytona racing before getting his shot at the big time, test driving for the Ensign F1 team at the 1981 Brazilian Grand Prix. He set some good lap times until he collided with Keke Rosberg's Fittipaldi, resulting in the FIA denying Londono a race license and thereby ending his short-lived career in F1.

Sometime after retiring in 1985, Londoño apparently got mixed up in the Colombian drug trade, and the courts seized nearly $10 million of his property in 2000. Local officials are said to be carrying out a search for his assassins, who also gunned down two other unnamed victims, however, none have been found as of yet.
