(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score i ordered these before john was banned. we exchanged a few PMs back and forth about the parts. eventually, i ordered my internals directly from the hpfpupgrade website. i got tracking info in a day or so, and the parts arrived within a couple of days. included were the internals, as well as a pair of rubber gloves (driving home the importance of keeping this stuff clean), an installation tool, and directions. the last page of the directions was the break-in procedure for the internals. the directions were helpful, but more helpful was the video below. between the two, i don't see how anyone could botch this install. i spent more time removing / installing the pump on the block than i did in the actual internal swap. the level of detail in the instructions went so far as to tell you which direction to turn the fuel line clips to remove them. they were very specific and walked you through the steps on a mazda, not the steps on a VW. my pump was pretty dirty, and i used carb/choke cleaner in combination with qtips to get it clean. no problems there. the fuel pressure on my car is holding just fine so far. i have not had a chance to do any data logging, though. but monitoring from my aeroforce gauge, i can see the fuel pressure is in the 1750 range where it was previously in the 1600 maybe 1625 range. at full throttle, i'm seeing over 1800 psi, but i'm not staring at the gauge when flooring it, so i can't give exact numbers until i data log. so, the last thing i want to mention is why hpfpupgrade instead of autotech, kmd, or cpe. cpe was out because i didn't want to buy an entire pump. the cpe pumps fail. cpe sucks at refunds, exchanges, core related stuff, etc. i'm not interested in going down that path. kmd has taken a real hit lately in their reputation as well. so they were out. that left me to choose between autotech and hpfpupgrade. i think autotech's are probably fine to purchase. i don't have anything negative to say about them. but these are the reasons i went with hpfpupgrade. 1) hpfpupgrade is made for mazdas. sure, they are the same as the VW pumps. but go to the autotech site. there is nothing about mazda there. at all. hpfpupgrade builds parts for mazdas. 2) hpfpupgrade tests their internals and pumps. they have a machine to do quality control there. if they ran into a "bad batch" they would be able to catch it before they start going to the public. 3) buying from hpfpupgrade is buying from the manufacturer. no need to have a vendor try to intervene on my behalf should a problem arise. 4) they have a lifetime warranty. and in one of john's posts before he was re-banned, he said he'd let that warranty be transferred. not that i plan to sell, but i think it shows how much he stands by his products. 5) i have not heard of anyone having problems with the hpfpupgrade internals since they were redesigned. and as much hate as this forum has for john, i feel very confident any problems would have been so thoroughly documented that they would be impossible to miss. 6) they reuse the factory retaining clips. i have heard of situations where the autotech/kmd pieces have shattered, broken, been lost, shipped with the wrong pieces. i did not want that headache. 7) the fact that it's used on Erich 's car is not much of a selling point. but i think it shows hpfpupgrade is capable of created a fueling solution that will meet my low power goals. so i need to acknowledge i took that into consideration, even though i would have bought the internals for reasons 1-6 alone. <edit may 2012> 3500 miles after less than 2 months. everything is working just fine. i got 99 problems but fuel ain't one. <edit march 2013> i'm at about 13,000 miles and running strong.

There will be an upgraded turbo coming in the future and I'd rather pay once and be done with the pump

alright, this is EXACTLY why i dont do HPFP internals! These internals were brand new from John, they were installed into a BRAND NEW CORE! so the whole set up was new as could be. well i just took them out today to install my AUTOTECHS (thanks eric@edgeautosport!). upon removal i looked (didnt have to look close) and found out why my pressure was dropping. i think the pics say enough however if you cant tell........ for having less than 5K on the internals they are grooved all over, deep enough you can feel it with just your finger running over it. AUTOTECHS FTW! ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Not Ranked : 0 score broncojd78 Yeah it does suck for me, and it will suck for you some day too, cause he wont replace them for me..... real great warranty he has there, if i could do it all over again i would have saved myself the time, headache and delay in tuning and just gone with autotechs from day one!! my advice to anyone! every dog has his day, HPFP internals have had a good day with a few members but if a pole was taken, you would be told to STAY AWAY!

as I said originally, it was a brand spanking new core from Mazda, with the brand spanking new internals form john, 0 miles on both, and if you want to know about the pressure loss just ask Lex as he is doing my tune and they dropped into the 1300 PSI at WOT!

| Not Ranked : 0 score broncojd78 I hope yours hold up, im not wishing and expecting them to go out on you, its very annoying and can really hurt your engine if they go out and you don't know it. just keep in mind mine lasted around 5K miles before i saw a pressure drop and i do drive pretty hard and aggressive for a daily driver so they may last longer or shorter however others have had bad experiences too, i have e-mailed John personally and directly and gotten the run around. just be repaired for the worst if they do go out and if they dont great!

i am aware of the importance of fuel pressure. that's why i have my interceptor gauge. and that's why i bought the hpfpupgrade internals. i really wish you had not had any fuel pump problems, regardless of brand. but with the low level of intelligence in your posts, excluding your last one, really make me question the validity of what you say. the bottom line is, we'll never know. you'll never know if you blew it on the install. i'll never know that it was spotless. all i'm doing here is posting my impressions of my parts. i'd prefer that you grind your ax elsewhere. or at least be a little more thoughtful in your posts. or don't. fuck it.

http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...3/#post1406810 When you say great deal are you referring to one of the first generation pumps he sold for just the $12 shipping charge?

![]() As far as I knew, the only time the previous generation design got sold by John in the last year or so was when he was here in February and for just the $12 shipping charge and with a warning.

Shit, you guys scare me, this is why I have an extra stock pump, just in case the upgraded pump fails. I broke mine in yesterday, did some WOT runs in 3rd, pressure maxed out at 2088, I think.

with Gen2 sounds like you shouldnt have a problem, just let them break in and then watch your fuel pressure every now and then. you should do that with any set of internals.

I've seen more autotech failure threads in the last 8 months than ptp. I don't think there's been a single reported failure since the new machinist took over the manufacturing detail.

mine has been in for over 2 years now. Still holding pressure just fine. Of course I haven't taken it apart to look at it, but pressure is good. I am pretty sure its a 1st gen part too, I got it in the group buy 2 februarys ago.
