Default My FAILED attempt to install Autotech internals :(

EDIT:
Please feel free to GROAN the fuck out of me since I should have read all the stickies on this board

Long story short, we were following the Autotech instructions which said to remove the pressure release valve and when we started to rebuild the pump we heard a snap when we were screwing the valve back on. Now we get some serious movement in the valve and it throws a code......talk about a learning experience. I don't know much about engines so I'm not too pissed at myself but this still sucks.

After talking to some people I found out that you DO NOT have to remove the pressure release valve when swapping out the internals. I hope that this thread helps others who install internals so they don't do the same thing I've done. Now I am in search of a whole new pump since Mazda doesn't sell just the valve by itself.

See what SPEED6 KILLAH can get you in the way of parts. He seems to be quite resourceful.

No need to remove the spill valve unless cleaning it. The complete pump needs to be removed and then the pump must be held in a bench vice and an 18mm deep socket needs to be put over the spring piston assembly to gain access to remove teh OEM piston and sleeve. What did you use to remove the spill valve? I hope a 32 mm open end wrench, you prolly broke the plastic plug on it. You make me so mad! Ask for help next time you are in over your head please.

I thought I had read enough threads on the process and figured it was ok to follow the autotech instructions. I was trying to finally do something on my own rather than rely on others and the conclusion is that I should stick to getting help lol. Anyways, my friend found a dealer that can get a full pump to us by tomorrow, he's just double checking to make sure its in stock.

Check prices and see if the cp-e pump cost the same as stocker and just get that.

Blows man, Autotech instructions are ment for the VW. Try sourcing a pump from a junkyard. Might get lucky! I know I saw some OEM pumps forsell in the forsell section.

So the dealer is saying he can get us the OEM pump for $399....that sounds a little too cheap correct? Shouldn't this run me around $650+?

I'm also looking at ebay at this point.....I'm just not sure I wanna get a pump from a wrecked car

This is why people need to stop making half-assed installs on this (how-to's or whatever)

Do what he says with a vice and clean EVERYTHING

Oh hell no, I have no problem admitting when I screw up. This forum has shown me what happens when you come running here just to bitch and moan about how you didn't know this or that. I thought I had read up enough on it but I guess I just missed the one sticky that said "Hey asshole, DO NOT REMOVE THIS PART" - Lesson learned

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, the pump I bought from TWOptSL0W turned out to be damaged by Fedex so I'm back and square one. I *might* go back to the dealership and pick up the brand new one if I cant find a used one, but I REALLY dont want to do that if I dont have to. My girl and I are trying to get into a new house so this is happening when funds are pretty tight

He doesn't say to clean everything. There is no need to take the pump completely apart and clean it. Just replace the internals and make sure they are clean!

ive taken apart and put together 30 or so .... i clean the cylinder, the piston the retainer nut spring , locks ...EVERYTHING..... the main reason is this ....not what u might think.

when everything is clean its easy to spot a piece of dirt, or any foreign matter on the pieces, ...when they are in the black oil they come with things can hide....

do me a favor and look where the pump is discolored into charred marks.... do u think those char marks are liquid???

CLEAN EVERYTHING ...... not one of my pumps ever failed

p.s. u wont find it on any manual , ....because common sense should come standard in all human beings but as we all know that is not the case sadly

Dude, I go O.C.D. on the pump, the tools, the vice. Cleanliness is Uber important, importante 重要な, 거드름 피우는 get it! This makes the difference between happy pump or fail pump.

Depends on the mileage. I douched the fuck outta mine with 100K on it. No reason to 1/2 ass something that important. But everybody is different. It is what it is.

If you find yourself still needing a pump, I have a stocker sitting here I could sell you.
It was my original. I got another pump off an engine job at work and put ATs in it and swapped with my stocker. Let me know if i can help.

So after thinking it over the last few days I think I'm going to toss in the towel and sell the internals so I can move on from this disaster. Quick question to everyone here:

how safe is it to run the Cobb SRI & TIP without internals?
