Default 17 or 18 size indecision

Can anyone share their thoughts on my indecision regarding these two setups?

I am looking at some wheels for a summer set up and am undecided between these two sizes.
This is for the street.

17x8.5 (46mm lip) +42 235/45/17

18x8 (37mm lip) +45 235/40/18

These thoughts run in my head:

-17" tires-can run a bit cheaper

-8.5 width on the 17" may help with rubbing issues

-the higher offset on the 18" might feel and handle better with less scrub radius.

-looks? 17" or 18"? The 17" has a bigger lip going for it but may look odd since the spokes
don't go all the way to the edge of the wheel. I wish I could find pictures of the 17" wheel on our car. I've seen 18" and it looks good.

-comfort. The higher weight of the 18" might actually be more comfortable because of increased weight versus more tire on the 17"

The wheels are Work xd9 btw, and my car is white.
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Thanks, that's a definitely a doable option. Where are people getting the FD wheels?

Waiting and searching for private sales?

FWIW, I haz Genpu that comes with 225/40/18 tires stock with wheels that weigh 24 lbs.
I switched to 235/45/17 wheels that weigh 18 lbs. The difference in the way the car drives, takes bumps, and handles is night and day. For an every day driver I think this is the way to go (and the way it should have come from the factory). I also dented a lip on my 18s on a pothole, winters here in Philly and the northeast in general are hell on the roads.

both my DD set and track set is 17.

17's can take bumps/potholes waaaay easier. ive bent two different sets of 18's on this car.

A miata may be gay, but its probably faster than your car around a track. That's pretty gay.

Thanks for personal experiences. NYC roads are kind of rough where I frequent as well.

i'd agree with philly on the FD remark. tires are cheap, wheels are light, the taller sidewall is great for a DD but still capable to hold its own in corners. (this is coming from a guy who has FD's with yoko s. drives on that wore out...) so i just decided to purchase 235/40/18 conti DW tires for my rx-8 wheels. i needed a change but i'm sure i'll miss the lightweight and comfort of my FD wheels. this next set up is purely looks/grip over comfort/lightweight.

I bought a set of stock 18" rims and couldn't be happier. I like lower side walls for response....thats my preference at least.

I run FDs in the winter and I have a spare set (4) that I was planning on using for auto-x. I am also looking at 17's for DD.

Your FD winter set looks good. Thanks for posting the pic goob.
What suspension are you running on your car? It's hard for me to tell if that is stock or lower with the snow.
