225/40/18 better grip than stock 215's?

Looking at replacing tires and leaning toward 225/40/18 on my 07 speed 3. Will there be a noticeable difference with the extra width in traction compared to the stock 215's? Or is everyone mainly doing it for looks?

smoogs12 02-19-2013 02:15 PM

If you are after more traction, then get a more aggressive tire.

Just going up one size is not going to give you what you are looking for if you want more grip.

Oliverms3 02-19-2013 02:16 PM

255 or go home

surebOOst 02-19-2013 02:17 PM

.....Seriously, 205 is wider

onetechyguy 02-19-2013 02:24 PM

205 isn't wider?

I am looking at the michelin pilot super sports, pricey though.

Or the nitto nt05's

Here you go. Your search is over.

Kumho—Ecsta XS
OR
Dunlop—Direzza ZII

Also just to make sure we have an understanding...You DO NOT want to run any wider than 225 on your stock wheels.

COspeed6 02-19-2013 02:27 PM

235 or go home, yes you'll get more traction. You'll have a wider contact patch with the road which provides more traction.
(On a dry road)
Lol at fail wheel drive

onetechyguy 02-19-2013 02:32 PM

Ok, I'll check those out. My wheels are not stock, there the mazdaspeed ray's 7.5 wide

Then I think a 235 might be a little wide for your wheels, 225 would be good.

onetechyguy 02-19-2013 02:40 PM

Ok, I have the car lowered with Cobb springs, hopefully it won't rub

imo I still wouldnt go over 225.

And I know that this is probably going to start a huge debate, but having a wider tire (all other things being equal) does not mean you will grip better. Its just not that simple.

205 is smaller than 215 or 225. Thar number is the width in milimeter

I've been researching tires to death recently - also looking for more traction...a LOT more traction, as I plan on adding more power. So I was going to try and do both and get better tires AND wider tires - by 3 sizes (from stock 215/45 to 245/40). In researching I found that 235mm tires are all (at least all that I looked up) spec'd at 8" min rim width, and 245's are almost all spec'd at 8" minimum as well. I'm just wondering if I can squeeze the 245's in there without rubbing! assuming I roll the fenders...

smoogs12 02-20-2013 11:23 AM

The answer is probably yes, but your question is to vague to say for sure.

You need to know the specs on the wheel.

They're the RX-8 rims which I know are only 8" wide et +50 but that size is within tire mfg specs (8-9.5"). Just wondering what the results have been for this exact setup. This brings me to a question. I have searched on this forum enough to find that the search query parser seems strange. For instance if you search:
"RX8" - 0 results
"RX-8" - 0 results
"RX8 245/40" - 0 results
"245/40/18" - 0 results

:wtf1:

Didn't I already recommend that you get 235s?

You will not see/feel any measurable difference going from 235 to 245.

Maybe there is a reason that you go no results.

alphasaur 02-20-2013 11:57 AM

I run 235's on 7.5s because I like to be dangerous.

OP, many rave about the nt05's and they're what I would be running if I didn't get a good deal on my BFG G-force Sports

Deldran 02-20-2013 12:00 PM

I wouldnt go over a 225 on a 7.5" rim personally.

Jut for though. NT-05 seem to be well revied bang for your buck tire.
You can pick them up through walmart super cheap and no shipping.

I am getting a set of 235/40/18 for 650 all said and done.

I run 235/40/18 on stock gen 1 wheels and they are just fine on stock height, no rubbing or anything

John_speed 02-20-2013 12:02 PM

indeed you did...and thanks for your advice. I was trying to solicit people who have actually tried the setup. I had a killer deal on a set of barely used 245s and that's why I was asking.

Are those the G-force Sports COMP-2 tires that are rated #1 for UHP summer on TR? The COMP-2's have 300k miles worth of reviews but they are very good reviews other than road noise. Many people say the COMP-2's are very noisy.

dot584 02-20-2013 12:11 PM

I just got 235/40/18 Eagle F1's on my 7.5 inch rim offset 50 and I need to roll the fenders a little more cuz they rub just a tiny bit. I have a 6 btw on h&r springs. But the tires fit the rim better than a 225 imo.

tax makes it slightly more expensive than dtd for me, so take that into account.

nope, got the gforce sports (the comp2's dad). Got them for nearly nothing close to brand new, so I'll run them till they wear out and buy another set of tires. I also don't care about noise, I have full mounts so tire noise is the least of my concern lol.

Well the technical reason is that the forum search will reject three character search strings.

As far as the numbers go idk.

Not sure why you are so set on running a 245. But whatever.

yep did that - still Google lists results from many other domains, and doesn't give results I know are actually there (that I found manually). I'm no genius but I program computers for a living and it sure seems wacked out to me. No big deal...I appreciate your help - thanks anyway...

I totally get that Google will find some results, as will the forum search - but the way it works now neither will find ALL results and the forum search should be the one to find every single solitary result. Google uses a complex (mostly undisclosed) scheme in its crawler to decide on which links to list and how to rank them. I was not only searching rim/tire info but lots of other stuff and when I realized the forum search was not working, I subsequently realized that the answers may be there, but I just have to search more manually. The forum search is the only search engine that can list results with quick access to every word of every post. Then I gave up and posted a couple times. Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into a how to search forum!

Unless the site is setup to access all content of all pages (maybe it is?) it won't list ALL results. There's a reply in the link above you guys sent me to that even says it won't return some results. All I'm saying is that if we fix the fucking forum search you wouldn't have to be annoyed with people like me. To fix the little that's wrong with the forum search would take minimal amount of time. Or do you want people like me to keep asking dumb questions so you can be all pissed? Do you realize how many people have no clue how to site search on Google? So if you're THAT annoyed by those of us that are "search-challenged", why don't we actually FIX the forum search? I know I know I need to donate...I just joined man give me a chance!

We are not going to fix the forum search not when you can use google.

I have never once had a problem finding what I needed with it. So you are obviously doing it wrong.

The simple fact that you stated it was pulling results from sites other than mazdaspeedforums.org tells us you did it wrong.

Well you got me here... You see this funny progression of things happened. I searched on the forum FIRST then did a Google search (no you got me it was not the site search) to try and get results from lots of other places because I assumed I already fully searched this domain via the forum search.

Idk why out of all of that I pick this to respond to. But I digress.

The forum search WILL throw back any three letter search string you enter. RX8, ATP, MS3, KMD, go ahead and try all of them. Let me know how many return results.
