Anyone running Nitto NT05's? |
|
They stick awesomely in dry weather and corner like a beast. However they are what you would call "sketchy as fuck" in the rain. Overall I'm in love with them. |
Thats the only issue I have with them... It rains here kind of a lot. |
BFG KDW2's then... 300tw... they last a while too... not near the grip as the nittos though. |
no traction in first or second for me with the bfg kdw2s......................however they have a baller tread pattern |
Search. :neener: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...nt-05-a-33288/ http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...r-18-a-125975/ http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...5-tires-84735/ http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...-owners-71584/ I'm about to mount up my 3rd set of these. |
I have them, love them and roasted a set of fronts by the end of last season. 2 new ones are on the way before MNM. They're pretty decent for autocross to boot. Not R comp territory but close. |
drove around in them in the rain the last few days.... don't go wot and you'll be fine. only got a little floaty in highly puddle areas at about 80mph. if you drive with some sense, then you're fine. they DO corner very well, esp at high speeds and scream beautifully as you exit the turn under high acceleration. very happy so far. |
Hmm.. I plan only to run them in the front while my gForce Sports would stay in the rear. My BFG's are really decent, but I know once I get my BNR installed... it'll overwhelm them. |
I run a bit of a staggered setup with just 245 nt05's up front for traction. They hold up very well and help put down the power in 3rd. I still get a little slip but that's expected with as much tq. Love the handling of them in the front and helps neutralize the understeer due to the staggered setup. I've never had a problem with them in the rain...but it doesn't rain here too much. |
If NT05 is too sketchy in the rain, you might also look at the Invo. Good wet and dry performance. Not as good as the 05 in the dry but much better in the wet. Also trippy ass tread pattern lol. I think I'm gonna mount a set out back on mine next, run staggered setup of nt05 in front and invo in back. |
You may also want to look at the new BFG gForce Sport Comp-2. Not the same level of ultimate grip provided by the NT05 but close and handles rain reasonably well. |
Maybe it's been so long since I had a tire that was "great" in the rain that my reference point is shot, but I really don't have any complaints about the NT05 in the wet (at least until they reach "near-bald" status). They are a metric SHIT-TON better in the rain than the Kumho XS I had prior to my first set of NT05s... :dunno: |

Loved the NT05s. Surprisingly quite too. Never had any issues in the rain and it rains a lot here. Running RS3s for the track now but that tire is so sticky you pick up gravel all the time. Not so good for the street. Sounds like Tinkerbell is in the wheel wells. The INVO is a fantastic tire. Almost on par with the NT05. |

I'm running neogen great tire in rain or road. Trying to find a faster way back to the islands. Sent from my iPhone. |
Well, I haven't runt the INVOs personally. There is a guy with a Camaro SS that runs regularly at Homestead with the tires and he likes them a lot. With coilovers and an intake the Camaro runs about equal lap times as the MS3 on NT05s. |
So a little update: I've been looking at tires as of late, Falken Azenis RT615K Bridgestone RE-11 BFG g-Force Rival (ONLY comes in 245/40/18) The aforementioned NT05's Really anything with a sub 200 tread wear rating. Once the boost comes on with the little BNR 1st and 2nd are worthless. Mid-way through 3rd can be challenging. Especially when running E85. I estimate I'm around the 380whp level. I'll know at Mega Nator Meet... (Hope to see you all there) If I'm honest, the only thing holding me back running the Rivals is overall tire height. I'm in love with the 245mm section width, but I don't want my front tires to be taller in overall diameter than my rears. I'm running a 235/40... The Azenis is currently in the lead for tire choice. My biggest concern was and still is this; August 2012 I went to a meet with my buddy, Tom. Tom has a 540whp RX-7. Well, it did before the LS swap. No idea what it's making now, but that's entirely irrelevant. He was running a drag radial type super sticky tire, like an NT01 or NT05, actually... they were 555R's. And we chose not to drive home the night we were supposed to because of the rain. Well, low and behold the very next we set off... drove clear through the tail end of that storm and to this day I remember thinking: My car is fast, practical, reliable, I can drive it in the rain no problemo. I don't want to limit the types of things I can do. I don't want to go to a meet and freak out over a 5-6+ hour ride home because it's raining. I think the RT615K's will do the trick. I know the RE-11's would. Advan AD08's would be higher consideration... if they weren't so expensive. Just a peak at my thought process. As it seems to boggle the mind. Sometimes, often times especially, even my own. |
I've run two sets of NT05s. I will second @Nliiitend1; thoughts and say they are fine in the rain, even at highway speeds. I mean, don't be an ass and do 80+ on the interstate in the middle of a downpour, and watch your speeds on curvy roads around puddles, but I think they do surprisingly well for the tread pattern it has. They really are fantastic tires, even more so at their price. And if my clutch install goes well, I'll come meet up with the caravan on 87 with my 255/40/17 NT05s :) |
I'm on my third set of NT-05s. I never think twice about driving in the rain. NT-05 ≠ NT-555R ;) |
I've never had an issue in the rain with any of the ultra performance tires I've owned (Z1, Z2, RS3, 595RSR). I drove home from Lime Rock in a downpour on NT01's and they weren't that bad. Granted that was my first track day with them so they still had some thread. |
615 is an old tire, why stick with old tech. |
615k is the updated version. |
The K is still 3-4 years old. |
I can find info on 615k from 2010 :22: |
lol Doesn't mean they're dinosaurs. I'm sure all of these tires are at least a couple years old. |
rivals and re11 came out last year. edit: sorry 11a came out last year. I'm assuming nt05's are in the running due to price/performance. If price is a factor you should consider 595 rsr as well. |
I really wouldn't mind the Rival but they only offer a 245. I would even consider a 255/35. Since people are saying NT05's aren't that bad in the rain, I think that, being my original choice will be what I wind up getting. |
Why not consider ZII's as well? I'm probably going to go back to them ones these 595rsr's are done. |
Price, mainly. I can get a set of tires (NT05) for $320 shipped. ZII's are almost $220 a tire. I don't know that the Nittos are the last word in grip but for $160 a tire they're worth a shot. |
I forgot how expensive 18's are. One of the main reasons I have 17's now. |
I really fucking miss driving my car with the NT05s on warm pavement (car is in storage). That is all. |
I have had two sets of nt05s. They are fine in the rain. I never thought twice about it either. Hell they are still half life sitting in my basement on my stockers that Im looking to beat the shit out of at ENM. LOL. |
Im running the Nt-01s thats a sticky tire. |
i ran the falken azenis 615k in 255 / 45 (i believe) /17 on my ms3 with my 35r. That was a BAD ASS tire. in a straight line it was unreal, and i swear, you could not corner hard enough to make that tire break a sweat, i would buy it again hands down. The tires probably have close to 10-12k miles on them now, half on my 35R car at 480 whp, and half on my buddies 3071 car, and they get put through their paces fairly often between straight line and back roads. I doubt they'll live past 15k, but for $750 to put them on 17's its really hard to complain. Quote:

I've used the 615k's on my integra in the past and the grip was phenomenol. I would buy for the ms3 but they are a bit pricey. I feel like they are grippier then nt05s but that was a different car. The nt05s will serve you well. I've driven them in the wet with less then 1/32" and yet still predictable |
I miss driving my car, too... :( This winter has been tough, I feel like I could take out my car on nice days, close to 40 and dry roads. But this year has been cold, relentless and very, very snowy. WE'RE STILL under our average for the year though... ugh. GoldenSnowball.com | The Golden Snowball Award is a contest between 5 cities in CNY ? Upstate New York. The contest is based on which city receives the most snowfall for the snow season. The cities that compete are Albany, Buffalo, Binghamton, Roches |

Saw it mentioned earlier but check Nitto Invos also, similar to NT05s damn sticky and handle well in rain too |
But moneyyyyyy Tapa Tapa Tapa |
I know a lot of people running the Invo and they like the grip and the wet performance but they all say the sidewalls are garbage in the corners and roll really bad. Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2 |

I'm really looking for something sticker than the INVO. Personally. I broke 4th free tuning the other day. I can't recall but I think the INVO is actually more expensive, too. Edit: Same price. |

I just installed some NT-05s and they are a HUGE step up over my old V12s. The fact that they're 245 vs the old 215s doesn't hurt either... |

Im personally going to get the nitto nto5 cause I heard alot of great things about them, plus they are only like 130 a tire so they are affordable. |

Just bought a set for the front. Will be here next week sometime. We'll see how they fair against what I'm pushing. |
I must have looked at your tires probably 7 or 8 times, when it was parked next to mine, Alex. |
Where is everybody buying? I may just pick up a set to buy me some time. Tapa Tapa Tapa |

This is how they are in the rain. Sent from my iPad using Tapappallday |
I actually got caught in the rain on the way to the dyno a couple weeks back shortly after installing them and I drove at highway speeds with absolutely no issues. I was certainly cognizant of the tread but it did nothing more than psyche myself out. |
Purchased NT05 for daily/trackday tires. I can't complain one bit. Well they tend to get a tad bit greasy at the end of a 15-20min session. I instantly noticed better grip and on the track they are fairly predictable with awesome break away characteristics. When the rear slides it is very managable and at the limit they aren't crazy loud. Did anyone else notice a lot of road noise? Came from HTRz3(great daily tire if you're not making tons of power) which were fairly quiet but howled when pushed to the limit. |
I don't really notice much. But my setup is... pretty loud. |
I wish there was one of you NT-05 guys closer to me so I can get a ride and see how my Bridgestones fair against them. |
There was a thread earlier today with Discount Tire Direct Ebay deal $100 off $400 tire purchase. The NT05 were sold out but I got my local Americastire to match the $100 off. $111 each for NT05's 235/45 17 in Evo 9 rims. Worth a shot to see if they will match for the 18's |
^ Holy crap time to get a second set of tires lol |
