Default AWD and tire wear, what's the limitation?

I've got a lead on a nice set of gen 2 RX-8 wheels with nice tires for my MS6, the owner estimated the rears to be about 80% and the fronts somewhere closer to 85%. I've been reading that some suggest any time you have to purchase one new tire you need to buy four because the uneven wear can cause the drivetrain to overwork itself, but others argue that that is only true to a certain extent depending on how much difference there is in tire wear on the old tire vs. new tire. I can use a tread depth checker on them, but wanted to see what you guys thought would be an acceptable (if at all) difference in wear.

I thought it was only FWD at very slow speeds or with the e-brake engaged.

I would stick within about 2/10 , maybe 3/10 tire wear between front and rear axles.

It's awd like 99% off the time, 1% is reverse and low load low speed like under 10mph. There is a video of a guy who monitored the diff solenoid and it was pretty much always on.

As for the tire wear issue I'm pretty sure there is a tolerance number somewhere in the manual, if not it's online. It will be in a decimal number, so you can't compare that to the guys estimated percentage. I would just get new tires if your feeling unsure about it.
