The Kumho XS and Dunlop Dirreza Star Specs are some of the best deals in street/race tires right now.

i think the nitto nt-05 is better comparison....nitto 555 is their regular summer tire...extreme performance would be the nt-01 or nt-05

Since I autocross regularly, I tend to base my tire choices with a racing bias. If you're just street driving, this won't mean as much. You will notice the tires were shaved for racing.

June 2009 issue of Grassroot Motorsports tested Extreme Performance Summer tires size 205/50-15, 195/50-15 and 195/55-15.

Here is a summary of times from worst to first.

6th - Falken RT 615 Mean time: 35.302 sec. Quick time 35.125 sec.
5th - Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Mean time: 35.209 sec. Quick time 35.061 sec.
4th -Toyo Proxes R1R Mean time: 34.522 sec Quick Time 34.452 sec
3rd- Bridgestone RE-01R Mean time: 34.478 sec. Quick Time 34.430 sec.
2nd- Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 Mean time: 34.266 sec. Quick time 34.238 sec.
1st - Kumho ECSTA XS Mean time: 34.170 sec. Quick Time 34.030 sec.

All tires were shaved to 3/32nd and tested on a Street Touring category Honda Civic on an autocross course.
Tire Rack testing show the Dunlop Star Spec and Kumho XS to do very well for thier price. The were beat by tires that cost 35% more, so lots of value.

Tire Rack doesn't carry Nitto and I don't see them used by the racing crowd as much as the bigger names.

Where would you guys order Kumho XS? I'm stock rims so I'm looking for 225/40 or 225/45/18, and I've checked about 5 places. Am I probably just going to have to call a Discount Tire and get them to order them? And does anyone else really agree that they're that much better than the Falkens?

I got my set of 235/40R18 Kumho XS tires from TireRack last November.

I've never run the RT-615s on my MS3, but I did have them on one of my Focuses...That said, I believe the XS to be the better tire overall, though not by a landslide or anything.

In a few months, I'll be deciding between those two as well, the XS and RT615...based on everything I've read, I think I'll go kumho unless the Falk's are much less expensive but I think they're comparably priced.

From what I've seen I think the Falkens are running ~$10-$20 cheaper per tire (at least in the size I have)...

Also, running a 225/40/18 won't make much difference in wheelgap vs. a 225/45/18 wil it? The reason I ask is that for the Kumho XS, the difference is $24/tire (45s are more expensive).

What's the load rating on the 225/40??

The difference in wheelgap is negligible, if you ask me.

There is about half an inch difference in wheel gap (and by definition, ride height).

Was just at a local autox yesterday, running my OEM Bridgestones. They did well, but talk was that the Kumho XS is a really good choice right about now - better than Falken 615, RE011, etc. especially if you consider $$$. I sure with Mazda had put at least a 7.5" wheel on this car, but I'll be getting some 225 XS's and will report autox performance when I do another.

I'm just about through my first set of Kumho XSs, and while they were a great tire, I don't know if they were so good that I'm going to get another set before I try out some others.

Right now I'm looking at the RE-11 (pricey but the asymmetrical tire carcass intrigues me greatly), the Nitto NT-05 (cheap and looking very promising from early reviews), and the good ol' Star Specs (just because I haven't had a chance to try them on anything yet).
