chipped chrome on chromed MS3 wheel

anyone know what to do to prevent a chipped chrome wheel from chipping worse? other than a new chrome job?

my thought was to paint it with chrome spray paint and then just clear coat it. considering the size and location of the chip, would it hold up?

2008 MS3 chipped chrome wheel.

It looks like you have chipped chrome around the center of your wheel besides the dime sizzed chip on the spoke. All 4 of my identicle wheels have chipped around the center. I just joined to reply to your post. Mine is still under warranty Do you think its defective. Any other chrome stock wheels chipping out there.
Just purchased 2008 Black MS3 No mods yet! But I love it so far. Zoom-Zoom. Just ordered black and red CoCo mats waiting for there arrival looking at tires, may need rims if the chrome is crap.
Is there a spell check on this site.:147:

A little lesson about chrome...

...even though the dealer may sell chromed wheels... it is fact that chrome weakens metal.

Chrome is an electrochemically applied process... but the nature of it's apllication makes it a coating. The chrome itself, on a wheel, will be weak as well.

Coatings will fail much in the same way paint fails, athough paint does not weaken metal. Though it may not look as good, paint is better than chrome for a wheel.

PVD process is not destructive to metal and has so far proven to be more durable. IMHO, get PVD if you eventually re-do the wheels.

Now to answer your question... It will look like cr*p if you touch it up with paint. It will also continue to seperate.

Re-chrome the wheel in question for (a chrome) win. It is likely a lose otherwise. 2-cents... deposited.

dear god this is an old thread.

Unless chrome wheels are an option from the factory (which I dont believe they are) they arent covered under a factory warranty.

Most likely what happened is the dealers got the wheels chrome so they could add a little profit to the front end sale. Check with your local dealer to see if the chrome shop they use has a chipping warranty.

well, thanks for the replies, i guess?

those aren't my wheels. i was thinking about trading my stockers for those. was trying to determine if the chrome chip was a big or little problem. ended up deciding the chrome look was not for me.
