Evo X Wheels

So I recently picked up some evo x wheels that came with lugs + TPMS sensors and had my fenders rolled to put them on. When driving away there was some grinding noise so I went back and he checked it out and tried tightening them but nothing really happened...My studs are now stripped because the lug wasn't long enough. So my question is, before i buy the lugs and studs, is if I need longer studs than the OEM ones and if I should use the OEM evo lugs?
And before I get yelled at, I googled and searched everywhere to see what I need to do and didn't find much of anything, so to those that can help me out it would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get my car back on the road ASAP

Matrix311 02-01-2013 08:08 PM

I have evo x wheels on my speed and i'm using the oem mazda length lugs and they hold just fine. The problem you might be having is due to the lug nuts your using. You cannot use acorn style lug nuts like what the ms3 uses. These require special mag style lug nuts with the washer to hold these wheels in place to the hub because you'll see the contact point where the lug holds the wheel is flat. I had used my stock ms3 lugs for the first 50 miles and couldnt figure out why the wheels were all loose even though the lug nuts were tight. I then discovered you need mag style lug nuts. I picked mine up at NAPA for $2 each vs $8 each from the Mitsubishi dealer. So i'm going to assume that is your problem is you are using the wrong lug nuts. Even if you received lugs when you bought the wheels, they could have been the wrong lugs provided to you from the previous owner. Try replacing the lug nuts and see if that fixes your problem.

and yes to answer your question, use the oem evo lugs or get the mag style lugs from napa and problem fixed. You can also hit up the mitsubishi dealer and ask for evo x lug take offs from the service department for like $1 each

^This.

They're also known as "shank style" lug nuts. ;)

@Nliiitend1 thank you, so I do not need extended studs either?

Nliiitend1 02-01-2013 08:29 PM

I don't think so.

...at least I've never heard any of the guys I know of who are running them (Evo Xs) mention that they needed longer studs...

no do not get extended studs, stay with the oem studs. Just head to napa and get replacement studs from there. I stripped a few as i was trying to get my evo x wheels to fit properly. They were only like $2 each and work perfectly fine. No need to order custom lugs when you can pick them up locally from napa, orielly, autozone or pep boys.

Dang, you go them to fit? I couldn't find anyone running bigger than a 235, so when it came time to buy them there was a 245 and a 205 so i setled for the 205 because i thought the 245s wouldnt fit with a drop. Heres what it looks like (other side made it immobile),

im picking up my evo x's tmrw with tires 245/40. Is there any other stuff I should do other then fender roll in the rear and proper lug nuts?

anavrinIV 02-03-2013 09:10 PM

I bought spare lug nuts from ebay, OEM mitsus for $20 shipped. It's the cheapest route I found. I needed a couple extras but had a hard time finding them so I now have a whole set. OEM studs are right, extended will cause other issues.

boostdmazda3 02-03-2013 09:27 PM

whats the fender roll situation while being dropped with 245 tires?

With BCs I'd imagine your drop is about the same as mine (kw) if not lower, but when I got mine I leaned toward the 205s because I knew that they would fit with a roll and they came with tpms sensors so i won't have any lights when using the stock set. But I just got a roll and shaved the bumper/fender tab so that when I go 235s they won't rub.

I ended up getting some from an ebay store about 20 minutes from me for $32 and I'm just waiting on the studs now. Went with the OEM one's so hopefully I will be good to go

On 245s and stock springs I'll rub with weight in the back or over abrupt bumps. I'll be going with 235s next, but I doubt that will completely solve it. my fenders are rolled, pulled, and shaved and I still get this.

Looks like 225 might be the perfect fit with the smallest stretch  I really was trying to stay away from running this big of a stretch, but if I drop the car a little more, I think it'll look pretty clean, but my flaps will be constantly rubbing

i eneded up not going threw with it kid said he would sell me just the rims when he sells the tires...might just do 15mm spacers with my ms6 rims.

If you're running acorn nuts you're lucky your wheels haven't fallen off yet. The wheels are not designed for that style nut therefor you are putting stress elsewhere. I truly hope you're kidding.

good choice - you'll see what were talking about when you have the correct lug nuts. The acorn lugs will hold the wheel on but you'll see the contact points are very minimal where the mag style lugs will secure the wheel onto the hub. Dont put this on the back burner, replace those lug nuts asap before your wheel goes flying off.

Yeah, less rotational mass makes a huge difference.

I weighed my stock MS3 wheels with 225s and the total was 51 lbs.

The X wheels with 245s was 43 lbs.

mshabelm 03-12-2013 10:35 AM

Hey guys, I've been riding on my Evo X wheels for over 15k miles and I love them. Have the rear fenders rolled and the bumper bracket shaved. THe entire time I've been riding on slightly stretched OEM (215/45R18) size tires since they were still in good shape ever since I got the wheels.

Recently I started having tire pressure issues, one wheel in particular was giving me the most issues since I had to constantly add pressure once every three to four days. It turns out the grommet for TPMS valve stem was cracked, and the washer was bent. Remaining three deflate at a lower rate, but deflate nontheless.
I transfered all OEM TMPS sensors onto EVO wheels which I'm now not so sure was the right thing to do. Do you guys have any tire pressure issues with stock TMPS on these wheels?

Also planning to go to 235/40R18, I'm hoping the right fit tire will prevent these slow air leaks, but I'm also curious on Mazda to EVO X TPMS fitment. Thanks.:burnout:

speed3sven 03-15-2013 11:28 AM

I bought mine with tires, TMPS, and what was supposed to be the right lugs for 680 off craigslist. I wasn't the biggest fan of the stretch as I'm running 205/35s i think, but the only other option at the time was the oem 245s but I don't think that those would've worked with a drop. I think for my next set I am going to go for 225 or 235. After driving on the stretched tires though, I do not mind it that much because I have the oem wheels for the canyon or whatever. Also with a roll all around I rubbed for the first time up front the other day on a nice long sweeping right on ramp

NICKELL666 03-15-2013 11:31 AM

I'm running 215/45 on evo X wheels for now. Stock tpms. No issues. I had my tpms rebuilt at discount tire. I'm going with a wider summer tire though once it warms up..

So is the consensus that we use our mazda oem TPMS and just rebuild it on the new wheel?

thats what i did with mine. I bought my tires at discount tire and brought my wheels over to them to have them mounted and balanced and they pulled the tpms sensors off my stock oem wheels and put them on the evo x wheels for $20. Works perfectly fine.

So a little update on my side. Removed the problematic TPMS and discovered that the washer which seats the rubber grommet is deformed around TPMS housing. Anyone who transferred TPMS themselves have ever seen this deformation? The grommet is in fact damaged either due to deformation or over-tightening of the bolt. See attached pics.

So now I'm running without TPMS on one wheel with a generic valve stem and guess what? I'm still leaking air on that one wheel. I'm starting to think that the problem is not just TPMS but also the tire stretch. I drive aggressively at times and possibly during hard cornering, the tire tends to unseat itself...either its because its already an old tire or it may not have been installed properly in the first place. What do you guys think? I want my current tires to last for at least three more months. I will be buying 235/40R18 tires soon...hope the issue will go away.

speed3sven 03-21-2013 11:07 AM

Luckily mine came with the tpms sensors so that was one less worry; as for the aggressive driving, I dont know if thats the issue cause I hit the canyon the other night and had rubbing issues before traction issues and they held air after. Still dont like to drive hard on the stretch though, I feel like the lip is going to rub on the ground :wall:

Will915 03-27-2013 11:39 AM

Your car is so clean. I hope to get mine there one day. Was going to go with some black wheels, might look in this direction now. :35:

turbo toshi 04-04-2013 12:14 PM

Alright so let me recap just so I'm clear for when I put my evo x enkeis on.
#1 use oem evo lugs or shank lugs
#2 use your oem Mazda studs
#3 if you're dropped roll/shave fenders
#4 also if you want to stay dropper without rub run 225s or lower
#5 proper tpms install

I have some evo x wheels I'm putting on my car. Plan on running 225/40s on bc coils. Not supper dropped and trying to obviously avoid all rubbing without running too much camber. Guess I need to pick up some lugs now.

cyber-ms3 04-04-2013 04:55 PM

Um..with regards to #3 , my understanding is that regardless of being dropped or not if one would want to run 235 or more width tires then they need to roll/shave. With regards to #4 , I think some members here that are running EVO wheels and are dropped and are rolled/shaved run more than 225 without issues.

turbo toshi 04-05-2013 12:35 AM

cool. I would really like to run 235s. Pretty sure I can run 235 35s on it. I have a used tire shop that hooks me up and I planned on test fitting some tires then buying a new set of what ever I like.

spals 04-07-2014 08:40 AM

Has anyone used the stock mitsu TPMS sensors? I checked on Rock Auto and there is a generic TPMS that shows up for both the Evo X and the Speed so I'm assuming we use the same frequency. If so, what did you have to do to get them to sync? When I replaced the TPMS on my old 3Sport I had to do some procedure involving the brake.

Also, when you roll you front fenders what happens with the splash guard?

I reused my tpms sensors from my oem stock wheels and transfered them to the evo wheels. You can find oem sensors on ebay for cheap. Regarding the splash guard It will need to be trimmed with a razer blade when the front is rolled.
