Help Choosing Best Tire Looking into getting new tires this week but not sure what to get. Have a list of a couple tires but looking to get the best tire for my price range. Looking for a tire with some nice grip for the street and good life span(30-40K miles). Want to spend around $800-900 or under. Here's a list of what I have been looking at, if you know of a better tire than what I have listed let me know. Or any reviews on them, Thanks. Nitto NT05s, Star Specs, Kuhmo Ecsta XS, Yokohama AD08's, Continental Extreme Contact BFGoodrich g/force T/A, Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport, Dunlop Direzza DZ101 |
star specs close thread |
not even true...hahaha nah they are fairly good but they heat cycle out waaaaay before the tread is gone and turn into hockey pucks. Yoko Advan A048s are da bomb ...if money is no object. DOT auotx rubber. |
heres a smart rule.... do not buy this years top performance tire. buy last years or 2 top performance tire. end of lesson |

I've got about 25k miles on my Hankook ventus v12 evo k110s and have really liked them. Solid performer for the price, I'll prolly buy new ones when the time comes! |
The new Michelin Pilot Super Sport's look promising. I'm enjoying my Conti DW's. |

No, you wont get anywhere near that with an NT05, star spec either. Your best bet would be the direzza or the gforce |
The new Pilot Super Sports are the best you can buy for the money. They have substantially better treadlife then the outgoing PS2's, and substantially better grip as well. They really are the best. |
Yeah I just installed a set of the new super sports on a 07 S4 and the guy loves em. 30k mi warranty for that kind of performance is great. Also, you will NOT see 30-40k out of Potenza 760s. I rarely see those get over 20/25k. My friend has a GTI and he'll need to replace them before 20k(rotated with even wear.) |
I'm using dunlup sport maxx tt's but I don't think I'll get 40 out of them, but they are in your price range, and offer a great compromise. |
i have the extreme contacts on both of my cars and another ms3 friend of mine has them on his....very good price....we all have the DWS which are the all seasons....love them....good grip and low noise and good price |
Conti extreme contact dws ftw! |

The Stars were great tires for the money IMO and worked out great for handling but didn't have enough grip for my HP level. I would estimate I am +-370WHP and had to severely limit my power in 1-3rd gears with APP translation and pedal input. Fail Wheel Drive... At 300WHP they are probably great and their only drawback, which is widely known, is that they heat cycle out before the tread is gone. IIRC they start to lose their grip at around 1/4 tread left. Other tires may do the same thing and it may just be how things are. The A048s allowed me to put full power down in 3rd gear which was a great feeling :) anyway hope this helps. Looks like guys like the Cont Extremes...maybe I'll give them a try next. |

If you want street tires I'd go with michelin pilot sport whatever, pirelli pzero (not nero or rosso or other weird crap) and a few others. Direzza's, AD048 and the other high performance tires better than those mentioned above are heavy and you may not need the little extra grip unless you go do the track. |

I was also looking at the continentals extreme contact. Good reviews, but went with what I have now. Similar performance, but 80 dollar rebate at the time. I've ridden on the ventus v12 evo's granted not on the same platform, but they still seemed to have too much sidewall flex. I love me some falken azenis rt-615's, but they are a little pricey. |
FWIW I have the NT-05s on my summer wheels - For the money they are awesome, there isn't one thing I dislike about them. Dry traction is super, and contrary to what you read, Wet (rain) is fairly good. Have yet to hydroplane, or break loose (but I don't drive like an idiot in the rain, so...) I have the Conti DWS on my Cool weather/Winter wheels. They are the super tits! Dry grip is outstanding. Wet grip is unbelievable. You wouldn't even know it was raining out with these tires, they are that good... And they also go very well through the snow. My .02 |
Thanks everyone for your responses. Sounds like a lot of you have the Continental Extreme Contact, may have to look into this. Also don't they have a rebate or free GPS deal going on right now, when purchasing a set. I don't really need an all season tire or great in rain due to it only rainning a couple times a year in AZ. |
they also make a summer set called the extreme contact DW (dry wet)....similar performance...just doesnt have the winter tread and yes they do have the free gps deal going on |
I just bought the Conti Extreme Contact DWSs for my MS6 to replace some Bridgestone RE960ASs . The RE960s still have another 5-10000miles in them, but for winter here in the midwest, I decided a newer set with some deeper tread would be good. My only complaint thus far with the DWSs is that they don't handle as crisply. The sidewalls are a fair bit softer than either of my other sets of tires (RE960AS and RE040). This means that transitions are a bit sloppier, as it takes more time and more movement before the tires "set" in a corner. The treadblocks are also quite small which is good for snow and seems to provide pretty good hydroplane-resistance, BUT...it also means that the tire doesn't provide as much outright grip as the RE960AS either. Keep in mind, these are my impressions on an MS6 instead of an MS3 (your car is a fair bit lighter), and they ARE all-season tires rather than summers like some on your list. One of the major positives for me is that the tires cost me $706 for the set, mounted, with road-hazard and a 50k treadwear warranty from Quicklane (Ford dealer). Compared to the price for the equivalent Bridgestone RE970AS (the 960 is out of production), this was a savings of around $60-$70 per tire. |
Hankook Evo V12... amazing in dry and wet, very quite and so far great tread life. |
So I think I will go with the Continental Extreme Contact DW, the review's sound good and can get them for under $700. Thanks for all the input. |
I had the DW's on a 9-3 Aero... bought them because of the great tire rack reviews, they sucked, they get major flat spots over night and take a good 10 minutes for them to warm up enough to even out. May be I got a bad batch, but that's just my experience. Wet and dry handling was on par with other summer tires not better or worse. |

just like anything reviews are taken with a grain of sand as everyone has different experiences i usually go in and read the best...then the worst but ultimately it is up to you...there are just so many option out there haha i tend to trust tire rack's review though (the companies review not the people's review) |
There are a ton of reviews @ discounttiredirect.com also. Tire rack has great brands, but each carries different manufacturers. |
Take a look at Vredestein "ULTRAC SESSANTA" summer tires. There probably around $189 or so. Vredestein Superior Wholesale Tire 5217 West Buckeye Road Phoenix AZ 85043 Telephone: 602-269-6074 Fax: 602-269-5115 |

I've got some Goodyear eagle GTs that have performed pretty well in wet and dry conditions. A couple other local guys use them too |

I have Goodyear Eagle GT's currently. They still perform well and have over 25000 miles on them. Spring of 12 I'll be looking at new tires. Will most likely get the Vredestein tires to try out. |
