MS3 Lug Nuts for RX8 Wheels 1 Attachment(s) Just got myself a set of RX8 wheels for the track. Got it of a guy on Craigslist with 225x18x45 Dunlop SP 8090. Not sure if there is something wrong with the tires but they are absolutely horrible. Much louder than the Potenzas and not as grippy. But that's not why I am writing this. I installed the wheels yesterday and vehicle runs fine. Problem is that I don't like the look of how the conical edge of the lug nuts sit against the bolt hole of the rim. Looks like only the edges of the nut are touching and not the conical surface. I've tried to find out whether the RX8 lug nuts are different than the MS3 but it appears they aren't. This is how it looks like now. I put an arrow on the suspicious looking edges. The marks on the shoulder of the holes - are these from running an impact wrench or similar and just scratching the paint? or can they be marks from a different type of lug nut? Is this the way it's supposed to look? If you asked me, I would say the right lug nut here would be one that is sleeved and with a perpendicular shoulder to the bolt hole. Meaning the sleeve would center the nut on each hole and the perpendicular edge would clamp it down. But that's just me. If people here tell me that this is the way its supposed to be I'll accept that. |
looks normal to me. pretty sure most people run their stock lugs on these wheels. i did for about a year. NEVER heard of this....im still trying to figure out what youre seeing as being wrong lol. but looks normal. |
I have the stock MS6 lugs on my RX-8 wheels with no problem. Mine are conical shaped like the MS3. I'd go double check the tire rotation, make sure someone didn't put them on backwards. |
Take the wheel off and see how the lugs sit against the surface. The pictures do look odd and this can be unsafe. |
tire rotation is correct. I am going to check on the surface of the bolt holes on the wheel where the conical part of the lug nut meets the surface see if may be that's worn out. I guess if the surface of the lug nuts is rough and one were to repeatedly screw them on and off it could cause the softer aluminum on the wheel to wear out and the lug nut to go deeper than intended. I certainly did not apply to much torque when screwing them on so that could not be a one time thing. I'll take some pics and report back. |
2 Attachment(s) Ok, it does not look like there is much to worry about although I am still not completely happy with the way it looks. From the picture of one of the lug nuts you can see there is still surface area before the nut starts to grip on the corners instead of the conical part. Not much but there is 1 or 2mm. I think with frequent mounting and dismounting of the rims the issue could deteriorate to the point where the seats on the holes start grabbing the edges instead of the surface area. For right now though looks OK I think. Attachment 18070 Attachment 18071 |
How well do the bolt holes fit on the studs? It looks almost as if they've been drilled out a bit. |
That mark is just from the socket being rotated fast by a power tool. Mine look the same, don't sweat it. |
