rims w/0 TPMS

Is this a NoNO to run different rims and tires w/o putting in the TPMS type valve stems??? Is this a code stored in the cars computer or just a warning light that lights up??? Do you have to go right to mazda to buy these special Valve stems??? I might leave the stock rubber on the stock wheels or I was thinking about a tire dismount and switch over the TPMS stems and almost new stock tires. any thought here Also thinking about Kumho Ecsta ASX in stock size... Yes money is an issue!!

madvillain 07-15-2009 10:15 PM

i dont have my tpms stems any more, havent for a while. if you dont mind looking at the light, dont worry about it.

Nliiitend1 07-16-2009 01:40 PM

I don't have any TPMS sensors in the winter setup I ran the first winter I had the car (when I was living where you actually needed a winter setup)...

I simply put a small strip of electrical tape over the light so I didn't have to look at it. :P

It will store a code in the computer but it isn't a big deal. It's just annoying to look at the light. They are a small fortune if you look to buy them from Mazda. I've seen them for sale on here from time to time for much less.

steven88 07-22-2009 01:10 AM

i have been running TPMS less since I bought the car....when I took delivery of my speed 3 I slapped on some aftermarket wheels with rubber valve stems...the light was annoying at first...but I got use to it and now it doesn't even bother me...

Strytnyne 07-23-2009 10:07 PM

i cant even mount tpms on my my valve stems extend from the middle of the rim

wrexla 07-24-2009 06:47 PM

Does the light flash or is it on solid?

Nliiitend1 07-24-2009 09:01 PM

It's on solid, IIRC.

it starts off flashing when you turn the car....then it stops flashing after 1 minute...stays solid and does not beep at you

iirc, if you have TPMS installed...and one of your tires is low on air...it will BEEP and FLASH at you...correct me if i am wrong

ZoomByU 07-25-2009 12:32 AM

mine just did this tonight with tire press still good...but it flashed a few times beeped real loud and stayed on constant.

SgtP 07-25-2009 02:24 AM

it cost an extra 100 to transfer the sensors to my new rims so i said fuck it. its just a light.

ZoomByU 07-25-2009 02:29 AM

how often do ppl normally check their tire pressure?

SgtP 07-25-2009 02:31 AM

i visually check every time i walk to the car but rarely take the actual pressure.

ZoomByU 07-25-2009 02:33 AM

just curious because my tpms light went off and tire press was good on all 4s. so i let them all out to 25 and filled back up and went out. so even with slight press difference this thing will go off.....so ust wanna say as long as you check your press it doesnt really mater just a light.

I got a price from a shop I know that sells custom rims. $75 to transfer my TPMS to the new rims and dismount my stockers and mount and balance them on the new rims. Is there gonna be any unseen problems that I need to know about ??? Can you just unbolt the stem with sensor attached and put them in the new wheel without any rebuild kits???? Black electrical tape ready just incase!!!:banghead:

SgtP 07-25-2009 10:44 AM

they need rebuild kits but they are cheap. like 4 bucks each.

huffentuff09 07-25-2009 11:24 AM

Is that where the extra hundred came in the cost of rebuilding the sensor + the $16 extra bucks for kits.. How long does it take to rebuild or what ever they do to each sensor!!!

PS:: do you have to rebuild everytime you take out the sensors ????

dixie789456 07-28-2009 06:29 PM

hmmmmm i didn't think about this. i hate staring at lights on the dash. guess i'm gonna have to pay the extra. do all speed 3's have tpms? i haven't even checked mine yet.

defts 07-28-2009 06:43 PM

I think all MS3s have TPMS. I have a sport and it comes with TPMS. If your wheels don't have the sensors, the light will come on and blink for a minute, then stay solid. If your wheels do have sensors and your tires are low on air, the car will beep, the light will flash, then turn solid without any more beeps.

dixie789456 07-29-2009 09:25 PM

yeah i looked at mine tonight and i have em' looks like i'm gonna have to transfer em' to my new wheels! or get new ones and have two sets of wheels

Switters 08-03-2009 09:48 AM

Rebuilding a tpms sensor is not a long process. I work at a shop and all we do is replace some of the parts on the sensor itself. The kit usually includes: new gasket, nut, valve core, and cap. Well generally do the "rebuild" as a courtesy and don't charge anything.

2007speed3 08-03-2009 09:53 AM

hmm i never rebuilt mine transfered them 3 times to date.

All speed 3's have the TPMS

dixie789456 08-10-2009 06:59 PM

i got an extra set off of a guy here so no light for me! and i still have the stockers for winter rims with no light also! yay me!

alexspeed3 09-14-2009 09:49 PM

If you have two sets of rims with TPMS you will have to go to the dealer and pay 50 so that they can adjust the codes for each. You are better off running no TPMS on one set

No you don't.

At least I didn't need to when I bought my second-hand set of RX-8 wheels w/TPMS already installed... :dunno:

Agreed -- I bought a set of regular mazda 3 TPMS off ebay for $105 shipped, had them mounted on my 2nd set of stock rims and never had one light.

erod550 09-16-2009 02:23 AM

I just ordered a set of 16" cheapy wheels for winter tires and chose not to get the TPMS as Tire Rack wanted $200 for them. I will just deal with the light or do the electrical tape mod. I'm sure after a while it won't bother me, but I know it will be annoying at first.
