Im not sure of the backspacing on 17's but they may work since it's a smaller wheel. At least you wont have the taller tire situation with rubbing, at least from what ive read.

What's the offset on those? 245's are stretching it a bit far on 8 inch wide rims. That's usually a sizing for 8.5 or 9 wides. You might be better off with 235's, unless you're running a tire with a really stiff sidewall.

Toyo used to have recommendations on their website for rim widths. There is a minimum, recommended, and maximum width for each tire size. For 245/40/17, the minimum rim (weakest sidewall support) is 8. Recommended is 8.5, with the max being 9.5.

With 235/45/17, the recommended rim width is 8, with minimum being 7.5.

I can go into the differences in sidewall shape and handling and what not if you want more information. But basically, a really wide tire on a not so wide wheel usually means the shoulders of the tire suffer from lack of reinforcement.

Toyo Tires - Proxes T1R™
(Click on tire specs to see rim width recommendations...these apply to all tires, not just toyos.) And for the record...I HATE T1-R's. I do NOT recommend them. They were one of the worst tires I've ever purchased in terms of "extreme performance summer". The hankook/falkens beat the living snot outta them for far less price.

Of course this conversation is mute if all you are going for is forward traction. Rim width/tire sizing only applies to handling/track performance, not drag/from a light traction.
