Default speedo correction

Has anyone with different that oem size tires have anything yet to correct the speedo? I was just thinking that when winter rolls back around and the winter tires go back on i would like to make sure the speedo is accurate; mainly for odometer accuracy. Considering that i drive close to 100 miles per day atleast 5 days a week a couple mph off can really start to add up.

on my car I put on 225/45/18 instead of the stock 215/45/18 and it is "plus zero" with the oem tire size meaning you dont need to recalibrate your speedo....so just get a tire in either of those sizes and your good to go.

how do you figure its plus zero? 45% of 225mm is more than 45% of 215mm. actually its almost a 1/2 inch total diameter per tire. the speedo will be off. the good news with that scenario though is that the speedo will be reading slow.

A wider tire will not afect your speedo, only a taller or shorter tire.

Running a 225 to 245/45/18 will not change your speedo readings.

But a 215 to whatever/ 40 or lower/ 18 will.

The number you need to worry about for speedo readings is the middle number.

lol riiight but do you know why the middle number will affect the speedo? its a percentage of the width of the tire. so yes a 245/45/18 will give your a speedo a different reading than a 215/45/18.

so back to the original question....has anyone, and i am now assuming not, done anything to correct there speedo with different size tires?

Its not off enough to worry about.

215/45/18 = a 3.80" sidewall.

225/40/18 = a 3.54" sidewall.

245/40/18 = a 3.85" sidewall.

Also all tires are differant a 225/40/18 goodyear will most likely be a little bigger or smaller then the same size nitto. Also speedo's have a + and - they are not perfect.

the 245 40 18 is close but thats not the tire size that i am choosing to run. you have to take that sidewall measurement and multiply it x2. so the difference is actually twice what you have posted. while i appreciate you trying to tell me that that its not going to make that much of a difference i just really want the original question answered. i assure you that i know all about tire sizing. i dont need an edumacation on this subject.

I'm sorry, not trying to educate you my answer was for bykeryder4life. I should of quoted him.
But maybe you can educate me. I came up with my numbers by
225/25.4(millimeters per inch)=8.85x.40= 3.54"
Not understanding were the x2 comes into play.

As far as changing the speedo reading, you would think that the cobb programer would be able to do that. But I have never looked into one. I just know that all the programer's I have had for other cars had that function.

215/45x18=25.62" diameter
225/45x18=25.97" diameter
The 225 is 1.4% larger (taller). Speedometer reading will be that much lower. Actually, doing this very thing made my speedo dead on at 60. It was reading a pinch high (1/2 mph).

The "x2" has to be used, 'cause the total sidewall height is necessary, plus the diameter of the wheel. Unless the speedo is electronic, no programmer will change it. Are our speedometers mechanical? If so, the only way to change it is to change the gear driving it (not worth the expense, IMO).

the x2 has to be used because you have to look at a tires diameter not just the sidewall. there is sidewall at all point on a tire including on top and on bottom. if i used your equation here, a 225/40/18 would be 3.54(sidewall) + 18(rim diameter) which would equal a total tire diameter of 21.54" which is not correct. you have to take that 18" + 3.54 x 2 = 25.08 that is the correct diameter of that tire. give or take a couple 1/100ths

its not JUST the sidewall height that causes the speedo to read different when a different size tire than what the speedo was calibrated for is used. its the over all diameter and circumference of any size tire that effects how many revs that particular size takes to go around per mile. and if that is not what the speedo is calibrated for, then the speedo will be off whether is .5 mph or 20mph.

LOL at this thread.

Hey guys dont forget to take tire wear into account in all your calculations...... remember to rotate your tires and recalibrate your speed every 3000 miles.... LOL

Someone please answer the OP's question.
So far I see an iffy maybe on a future Cobb AP revision.

That Speedrite looks like it's just a more evolved version of the Abbott ERA I have. Damn it was a pain getting the thing out I hope I can find a better spot for it in my MS3.

Everyone can check out this website:

Tire size calculator

I find it useful. At the bottom it shows the comparison for the SPEEDO difference between the two different tires that are selected. Always double check rather than using the website, but I have found it helpful for a quick look with my winter tire setup and other questions I had related to tire size. I am going to go to a 225/45ZR18 in a Sport Contact 3 for my Speed 3.

What he's saying is the speedo reads high from the factory.... this is done for liability reasons (better to read high than low) so assuming the 2mph under (speedo reads 60, you're doing 58) that was mentioned above and adding 1mph with slightly bigger tires would actually make your speedo more accurate (now reads 60 at 59mph)

EDIT:
You know what, now I look at the complete thread again you are right, i remember some of the posts that have been removed, but from what I saw he was in the right, and the other users were not. Like Laloosh said he basically schooled them. As you can see from the groans it was some of the "in crowd" he schooled, maybe that is why.

But from what I remember, gofast was in the right and the other users were getting schooled and flaming him.

Anyway, it is what it is.
I would like to know who banned him and why though.
Could be it had nothing to do with this thread, as he posted for almost 6 months after his last post in here.
I dont see anything in those 6 months ban worthy, but again you dont know what has been deleted/cleaned up.

erm...the groans are all from today....the boys are just letting it off on a banned user since he can't groan them back. I don't think you can count the groans today as to why gofast got banned...

FWIW, I don't remember anything coming from gofast that was ban worthy...but calling Haltech out or personally insulting a mod could've been enough...
