tire plugging question so i got a screw in my tire tonight. i missed 2 race opportunities on the way home cause i had the donut on...frustrating. went to walmart and got a tire plug kit like i have before. but the kit now reads. warning: this repair kit is only suitable for emergency tire repairs to enable vehicles to be driven to a service center where proper repairs can be made to the tire. not intended for use for major tire damage. radial ply passenger car tires may only be repaired in the tread area. no repairs are permitted on the bead, sidewall, or shoulder area of the tire. extreme caution should be used while using tools to prevent injury. so my question is what is the difference between these at home plugs and a tire repair shop plug. honestly i have used this type of plug for thousands of miles on another car but don't remember reading this warning. are they trying to just hand off liability? or are these type of plugs just not legit. |
For some reason my car loves nails and screws. My last set of tired i had a total of 5 screws in them. 2 in one tire. This set i also have 2 in one tire. Any way i went to get it fixed for the second time a while ago at a shop near me. They told me they use the same kit u can get at pep boys. Heres an example of the kit and how to use it. It works perfectly and has been leak free. Tire Repair Kit in action - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum |
the one they have on the fj forum looks a bit more involved than the one i got. this is the one i got. Deluxe Tire Plug Kit (#2040-A) May. Bike Month. Be Slime Month. |
i have 2 nails in one tire and a screw in another and i think a nail in another. been that way prob at least 6 months. |
why don't you just take it to a tire place and get it fixed for $25? it would be done right. |
The difference is that tire places usually actually patch the tire, not just plug it. This requires the removal of the tire from the wheel (so that it can be patched from the inside) and then the re-mount and balance of the tire. |

Those tire plug kits work just fine. I have made many repairs over the years - on bot on and off road tires, and the plugs have always last the life of the tire if you follow the easy directions and do it right. |
Do you not have a Discount Tire or someplace similar close by? They fix tires for free. |
