Default Wide Tires and Stock wheels

I am curious has anyone put wider tires on the stock wheels? i see some cheap 245/45/18 Potenza RE050 well 2 of them anyways. (anyone know the difference between RE050 and RE050A?)

Has anyone out there put wider than 225 tires on the stock rims? Would 245/45/18 be possible on the stock 7.5" rim? What about stock RX8 wheels?

How would staggered tire sizes affect performance? 2 large ones in front for all that powa!?

Phat tires Rule!

Im pretty sure our stock rims are 7.5". Im riding on 225's which already stick past the rim. I dont think you can go much bigger than that on our rims but I cant recall anyone trying and failing either. And as for 245's hellz no lol.

a) Stock rims are 7" not 7.5, for the Gen 1 anyway.
b) Go to the tire manufacturer website or tire rack and see what the rim width range is for the tire you are thinking of. Stick within that range. Outside if that, either handling, or safety, or both will suffer.

I believe the widest I have seen that is within that rim width is 225/45/18 unless you go to a much taller side wall which will cause clearance issues.

i have 245's on my rx8s. and those are 8" wide. They are the fattest tire that still falls within spec for that wheel size. anything bigger than 225 on the stock wheels is asking for trouble

Yep, stock rims = 7 inches NOT 7.5 inches

Anything wider than 225 = Massive fail.

Get some wider wheels if you want wider tires.

yeah anything beyond 225's will not only be impractical, but they could become very unsafe as well. The tires will not wear correctly

Guess I gotta get some new shoes then... 18x7 eww. 18x8 or 18x8.5 If I am not planning on fender rolling or lowering my car was is the widest to recommend? Thinking the Dunlop direzzas or ventus 12 evo in a few Kmiles. Rebate on the ventus right now 50$ thinkin about getting some early.

How does wheel offset affect what size tires you can put on? I don't really care if the wheel is flush or not I just want Wide wheels. Moar grip rite? Is there any ideal tire size for our car? can you have too much rubber from a performance standpoint

if you dont want to roll your fenders your pretty much stuck at 225, 235 if you get the right offset

offset - the distance the hub is from center with relation to wheel size ie. RX8 wheels are +50, which means the hub is 50 millimeters towards the front of the wheel with relation to the centerline. this is a "high" offset, which pushes the wheel further into the well. a lower offset will bring the wheel out further.

Too high an offset, you rub your shocks/hit the inside of the fender when turning the wheel, too low an offset and youll smack your fenders and they'll stick out of the wells

^^rx8's with 245/40 Starspecs. thats pretty much the limit. lots of rolling and grinding to get that to work

You can fit a wider than recommend tire on a small rim but it doesn't mean it's right.

I put 245-35-18 Hoosier R6s (which are more like 255s) on my 18x7.5 et46 stock size wheels and it works awesome. Don't listen to the stretch tire huggers. It works fine and looks good. And no these do not rub at all

I didn't know 245's would be stretched a hair on a 9".

Stock wheels are 7", NOT NOT NOT NOT 7.5". You can oversize an R compound tire due to the VERY stiff sidewalls, but true street tires will suffer when not on a proper sized wheel. That being said, you can still do it, just know it won't be optimal.

This is in the Gen 1 forum, but you never know.

It is always better, now a days in this forum, to clarify you are talking about MS6, MS3 G1, or MS3 G2, because of the differences, to make sure we are all talking about the same car in the same thread.
I have already been thoroughly confused a few times because of this issue.
One person talking apples, and someone reading thinking they are talking about oranges.
